do you have to be in awe of someone to love them?

in part based on evidence of a recent break-up and the ex heading off with Guy From A Band rather than twatty journo.

But seriously, is being in awe an important component of being in love? or is it really a slightly unhealthy, ultimately illusory side-effect?

also published successful journo versus unsigned nomark indie Guy From Band waster fight!

Being in awe of someone puts you in a very passive position in the relationship, which is probably unhealthy.

(I too am waiting for the day when journalism becomes a hugely sexy profession)

Nope, I could never be in awe of anyone...damn, explains alot.

I have deeply admired everyone I have ever been in love with. But if I had been in awe of them I might have been too starstruck to have sex with them, and that's no fun at all.

Being awe of someone suggests an unequal relationship, with one person almost becoming the other person's groupie. It could be love, but it's a dubious kind of love.

Of course it could be that both people are in awe of each other, but these things very very rarely work out that way.

no.

What about being in awe of their enormous sexual prowess? (or grebt intellect, amazing loveliness, blah blah all that other stuff that isn't sexual prowess)

Emma, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can be in awe of some aspect of them (for example, if you were in love with Barry Bonds you could be in awe of his HR to AB ratio), but to be in awe of the person as a whole, from my perspective, would sort of preclude being in love with them, because what you're in love with isn't actually the person, but an image of the person you have deluded yourself into believing. And this will show in your behavior - either the person will tire of not being able to relate to you as a real person, or they will take advantage of you and eventually your false love will grow into real hate. You cannot place to much power or responsibility on your partner - it isn't fair to you or them.

Is there a typo in the question? If so - yes - you have to be aware of someone before you fall in love with them.

Oh and in a poll done the other day Journalism was the second least respected profession, after being an MP - so I doubt it.

Pete, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Watching all that f**tie has dulled your pun powers Ptee as there is no way anyone could mistake 'aware of' for 'in awe of'.

Emma, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it was a bit weak

Wyndham Earl, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

to be fair.

Wyndham Earl, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As if being respected has anything to do with the kind of sex those Journalists and MPs are having.

Ronan, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apologies for week pun. I am only just getting over seeing roman script again after weeks of kanji.

Pete, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What kind of sex are journalists and MPs having, Ronan?

In answer to the question, yeah possibly. It's prob the most rub kind of love, but it's damn powerful. Not necessarily about their job though - see this thread for more on t

Wahey, we got a curry leaflet through the door yesterday for K_________ Tandoori, recommended by x number of MPs, INCLUDING Anne Widdicombe! I was shoXoRed (and am making it my number one priority to order food from them NOW)!!

Sarah, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

do you have to be in awe of anne widdecome to eat curry recommended by her?

Wyndham Earl, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe being at least a little in awe of them helps the *falling in love* process? Tho unhealthy over the longer term.

I am waiting for the day when being unemployed and having all nights free to glam up the city and all mornings free for lying around becomes sexy. OH HANG ON...

Pyth, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was about to say, Pyth. ;-)

I think the drive to do what you want to do as a job is sexy. Sucess in your chosen field is sexy. (I include journalism here, but you have to be ethical, sorry.) I like being in awe of people I find the crushness of really being impressed by someone can go along way. Perhaps because I am rarely impressed by folks that I meet, ( ILx excluded *blush*) being as jaded as I, it would be great to be able to go AWESOME! about some other poor forked thing.

parker, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, enthusiasm is definately sexy.

Sean, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what kind of sex are journalists and mps having Ronan

They tell me there are 12 foot lizards involved. AND I MIGHT NOT BE TALKING ABOUT HEIGHT. No wait, I am.

Ronan, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think that being in awe of someone is real love. awe seems to suggest a kind of disrespect of yourself and the person you are in awe of.

di, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, unless the person who is inspiring awe is the sort of egomaniac who likes that sort of attention they're going to get pretty tired of it very quickly.
