Alan Trewartha, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's all gone quiet over here

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not. Grrr

RickyT, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but I am 'multislacking'.

Archel, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not. And nor will I be. Good.

Emma, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it was 1 0 to senegal when i left the pub

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope - thankfully. I am reading Fermat, making jam labels and ignoring writing to an mp3 ha ha ha.

Sarah, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ahem. I meant to say MP!

Sarah, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That picture was made for this thread... (?!)

NB. It is still 1-0 with about 10 minutes to go.

Archel, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it should have gone in the "what movie are you", sorry. however, in a "i'm not watching the footie" sort of way, it'll do

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All the football sites are bunged up! What's the score? Still 1-0?

Jonnie, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what emma said, in fact "puss in boots" is now drowning out the honking cheering crowd so there huh!

katie, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Still 1-0 in the final minute. Freaking heck. Go Senegal...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, had a silly Self Assessment essay to do and hand in today, for which I only found the instructions at 4.30am last night.

Graham, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AOTC would have been better if it had had Jedi cats.

Not watching football: I don't like any sport where blood isn't spilled over ice.

Nicole, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was breaking my back shelving independent inquiry reports. Hows the cricket going?

jel --, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that's it 1-0, france lose

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ice soccer! There's Nicole's answer. ;-)

Anyway, let's see how many more upsets happen...could be fun.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay Senagal 1-0!

Cricket : England 168-1

Dr. C, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yay!! On both counts!!

Haha! Mr Zidane! Your boys took one hell of a beating!!

jel --, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1 down, only about another 42,000 to go. I think this is going to be worse than the month I gave up alcohol.

Emma, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You gave up alcohol? Emma, whatever were you thinking?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was thinking 'oh no I am turning into an alcoholic I must check to see if I can go without for a bit'.

Emma, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

again what Emma said! and everytime i mention that tha footie = rubbish and completely takes over the ENTIRE WORLD, some BLOKE always says "well it only comes round once every 4 years" oh as IF that makes how boring it is any less! and this ON TOP of the normal football which only bores me for what, 7 months out of EVERY year! grr grr rage rant etc...

katie, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and about being an alcoholic too.

katie, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey! only 2 years to the European Championships!

jel --, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma's answer is most understandable. About the alcohol.

You see, Emma and Katie, you should be out here on the West Coast, when nearly all the matches are played in the dead of night. You would be able to go out drinking without fear of games on in pubs.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We had a fantastic atmosphere as well here at SOAS (and some proper Senegalese to help out). That's the way a world cup should start. COnsidering Denmark is in the group (they are Denmark=we will draw) France are going to have trouble winning the group now.

Terrific stuff. Emma and Ktee - you kinda knew what this thread was about when you came to it didn't you?

Pete, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmmm Ptee, i belive the question was "you're all watching the football right now aren't you?" and my answer to this question, which is as valid as anyone elses's is NO! irrespective of any OPINIONS that i may happen to voice along with my answer! so HAHAHAHAHAHA to you YOU lost this particular pedantry-skirmish!

katie, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What she said. Katie your (quite correct) rant upthread is exactly what I have been trying to convince people of for some weeks now but failing. And while it is indeed only every 4 years, it takes 2 afterwards to hold post mortems and 2 before to build up + qualifying matches so in effect it is ALL THE FECKING TIME.

Emma, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YES! i was in the pub watching it. now i am back at work, back to the mundane tasks of replying to personal e-mails and being on ilx

gareth, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I sat on the couch with my friend drinking those huge becks bottles and falling asleep every now and again. London is a very sweaty and tiring city.

Ronan, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah! The World Cup has broken the internet. Great atmosphere down in the canteen. I am like, buzzing. I love the World Cup SO MUCH

Austin., Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am hopping mad.

Emma, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

100 for Thres...how d'ya spell it?

jel --, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, not as sweaty and tiring as Bangkok! Very humid and thunderstorm raging after a beautiful day, I sat watching it drinking out of my 52 oz big gulp of thai whisky, red bull and coke in the blazing airconditioning with a Jamaican, a German, a Canadian and a bloke from Bradford, we cheered much at the goal and the final whistle.

chris, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why are you Austin, N?

Dr. C, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought you don't do hopping mad - hoipping is unladylike. Hey if you want to make yourself miserable for a month, go ahead.

Pete, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why are you Austin, N?

His delicate way of announcing he's using a swedish pump, I'm guessing.

Nicole, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He is trying to get girls with fragile apples to marry him.

Emma, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Senegal won over mighty france-yeah !
Does this mean that france is out ?

anthony, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No.

Pete, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Anthony. Each country is in a group of four teams. Each team plays the others in the group (3pts for a win, 1 for a draw) then the after that the top two teams in each group go through to a knock out stage. France still have time to redeem themselves against Uruguay and Denmar

Austin., Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope. The tournament starts with eight groups of four teams. Each team plays the other three in its group once, and the two teams with the most points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw) in each group go through to the second stage. The second stage is a straightforward knockout competition, ie lose and you're out.

RickyT, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Antony sez: France is out

I would say: France are out

Krazy huh?

Nathan Barley, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you see Anthony? if it was just, oh the loser gets knocked out fine. but instead you get blokes banging on about "ooh well if they win the next round 3-2 they can go through on aggregate points points blah blah blah" 4 EVAH!

katie, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay what are aggreate points ?

anthony, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Katie just invented them; in the World Cup the term has no meaning.

RickyT, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this Right Uragay(sp) and Denmark play each other today
Then the Winner of that game plays Senegal
The Loser Plays France.
Then who ever wins the most games goes on to the second round ?

anthony, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All four teams play each other once, and the two teams with the most points (win=3 draw=1 each) after that go through to the next round.

Graham, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whether i invented them or not, i think the last ooh 10 or posts make it clear just how hellishly complicated the whole thing is...

katie, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This rules as I have Senegal as my group A team in my works forecast. Unfortunately I missed it as I had to go to a Jubilee picnic at number one son's school, plus he won a prize for his crown.

Billy Dods, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anthony is talking abt the country, nathan is talking abt the team: both are korrekt

mark s, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony,

Right click here and select 'Save Target as'.

I've posted it before, but it's a spreadsheet to calculate group winners etc etc - fill in the scores, and see how it works. Is macro free and works on macs. Unlike me. Boo hoo.

Nathan Barley, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Even so, take the team out of it and concentrate on the country; I'd still say something like 'France are having a referendum on the ratification of the Treaty'.

It seems to be a thing about whether collective nouns (I think; parts of speech have never been my strong point) are themselves singular or plural. I notice US usage favours the singular, whereas the UK favours the plural.

Then again, maybe I'm talking out of my arse. Always worth consdiering that option I find.

Nathan Barley, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony, I think this explains it:

bugger

Austin., Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh. That thing on the left is one of those goofy ass mascots they have, yes?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AnTHony I explained all this in proper sentences and everything last week - at your request! *goes and sits in corner and pouts*

Jeff W, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am strangely excited about the world cup. Not sure why, as I have not demonstrated any interest in football ever , except Euro 96, where I should have been revising. I think it may be to do with being very bored generally at the moment. I have taken up alcoholism to prevent boredom, and this probably goes hand in hand with football.

alix, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the goofy mascot looks like Wizbit. Paul Daniels should sue.

MarkH, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hooray for Alix's interest in football! The football balance of power in our house might now shift!

I watched it at Isabel's house - good stuff and a satisfying result. I am glad I don't really know anything about football because it makes me v.excited watching apparently quite average sides!

Tom, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

those tv's were the best thing about the whole fucking osrry excuse for an opening ceremony - i mean where the fuck was michael jackson on a rocket pack, or lionel ritchie?

Queen G of the 9th Seal of the revelation of Dubya's Ass, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Steady Mike and I were talking today about how much you need to know about footy to be very interested in it. In theory I'd like to say Not Much - to be open to all-comers etc. But someone on TV said last night, "I don't know anything about football but I really really enjoy it" - and somehow this didn't ring true for me.

Tom E - where do you stand? Join the heated debate.

the pinefox, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm surprised that the football haters are particularly distressed by this World Cup, given that all of the games are in the morning and therefore not dominating the evening's TV. I'm pretty distressed that I'll have to settle for highlights in lots of games. I took a long lunch hour today, but I will have to miss lots.

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know next to nothing about futbol but I think it's totally amazing when someone passes like 30 yds downfield right to the tip of his teammate's toe. They kick that ball around like it's made of paper.

In baseball you miss all of the suspense if you don't know much about it. During the baseball playoffs, when everyone's really paying attention, it becomes very clear that every pitch presents a different situation and strategy for everyone on the field. But it's quite easy to miss, and boring if you do. Basketball is much more transparent this way; most of my friends who don't like sports can at least tolerate basketball.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oddly enough, basketball more readily bores me where baseball's general pace is something more to my fancy, though I think I've only watched a total of ten games straight through in my life on TV or something (did once see Pete Rose with the Reds play the Padres in the late seventies out at Jack Murphy; Padres won). Not too sure why that is -- basketball theoretically should be more active, but I don't feel it that way.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I happened to watch the 5-1 England-Germany match last year on pay- per-view in a packed, sweaty bar (I was very surprised at how the excitement rubbed off on me) but generally know very little about international football. I can understand the passion for it.

Now I am getting kind of interested in the World Cup after reading the football threads on ILE and after chatting about it with the Argentinian woman who sits next to me.

I think the relegation system in the English football leagues would be good for baseball but the owners would never do it. Plus, my team would get relegated so I should be against it. :)

felicity, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been planted square in front of my TV since the World Cup started on broadcast TV yesterday (Saturday); all the sunshine and bird twitter had to take a back seat. Since I've never really been into watching sports, it's amazing that I enjoy the hell out of football: American Football is way overrated, and you never see anything interesting; Boxing: how many bloody noses (and flying teeth) do you really need to see?; Basketball: straight-up boring.

But then, footie has seeped into my blood through coming to the UK for 22 years;> Serious actual action, enthusiasm and men in shorts and socks? Yum.

Nichole Graham, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Basketball is boring, but college basketball is almost as fun as hockey to watch. Mostly becaue they screw up so badly and chock under pressure all the time.
I know Im behind the times but GTA3 has eaten my brain. I must control urge to steal cars.

Mr Noodles, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah right.

di, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh god does baseball need relegation. The Yankees should not get to play the Devil Rays 500 times a year, nor should anyone be forced to watch it. It's such a brilliant system! Can someone explain how it came to be?

Kris, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ask and ye shall receive. From a page detailing the history of the Football League in the UK: The changes began as far back as 1897 when the practice of promotion and relegation we take for granted today was introduced.

The League had expanded to two divisions in 1892/3, but any movement between Division One and Two was down to the discretion of the Football League Board.

The rules called for the bottom four clubs in each division to ‘retire’ and seek re-election at the end of each season.

But The League could also order any of the ‘retiring’ clubs, or any of the top four sides in the Second Division, to play against each other to ‘decide the question of superiority’.

These games were termed Test Matches and could be said to be forerunners of today’s Play-Off system. But they were also open to abuse and one game in particular lead to calls for a rethink.

Stoke, Burnley, Newcastle and Blackburn were involved in a Test Match series and when it came to the final game Stoke and Burnley, who were playing each other, only need a point to secure a place in Division One. According to match reports the players spent most of their time kicking the ball into the crowd and not surprisingly the game ended as a goalless draw.

The proposal was made and accepted to create a two up and two down promotion and relegation system. The first relegated sides were Sheffield Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers, with Manchester City and Glossop North End (a trivia question if ever there was one – the smallest town to ever have a side in the First Division) replacing them.

Despite calls for further change, particularly to four up and four down, the system remained the same for 75 years. Then in 1973 Derby County again brought up the subject of four up-four down, which was again defeated. But a compromise three up-three down system was accepted.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

REVIVAL

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just failed to wet my knickers with excitement when everyone in the office told me we had scored. Sorry folks. My boss has a TV in his office & the next secretary along has a mini TV on her desk. I am having lunch & writing a birthday card to my brother & yawning instead.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm wandering in and out of the atrium here where the game is on, largely to chat about the argentinian's crap hair and to drink the beer on offer, but I saw the penalty -- it was rubbish. drunk at work! marvellous.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Argentinian? We have 11 men against 1? That hardly seems fair, especially if he has crap hair.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it is pressday and I AM THE ONLY ONE WORKING!! if the mag is full of silly errors i am going to blame michael owen

mark s, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Us workers should be getting paid double time for covering our shirking couch potato colleagues.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not watching. I have no idea what's happening. My guess: we'll either win, lose or draw.

Jeff W, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My mum emailed me about midday to ask if I knew of any websites where she & her colleagues (the ones not in the pub) could watch the game. She has let me down. Though she redeemed herself slightly by implying that she was only interested in ogling Beckham (cradle snatcher! What would my dad say! Though he was ogling Atomic Kitten during the Queen's concert on TV) which is fair enough but unfortunately the cameras do not follow him around for the full 90 minutes allowing plenty of time for me to get bored.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Us workers should be getting paid double time for covering our shirking couch potato colleagues

Do I need to point out the irony here?

Matt, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes please Matt that would be lovely.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eep.
