I think: horribly depressed/insecure undergrad life, too many hours spent in computer labs, and being so happy when I got Trumpet Winsock to work.

Sitting in the newsroom at work, trying to listen to Napster songs through a speaker built into my keyboard.

Well I was at UCI and wearing band t-shirts from acts I had seen and listening to a lot of electronic music and chatting with folks on the Net about life and stuff and...wait.

Sitting in the dorm computer lad using Webcrawler to search for those random bands with ANY sort of web presence. I remember being thrilled that there was a Hum web page, even if the url was like students.uiuc.edu/~lastname and just a bunch of lines of text.

And looking at the wiki page for Webcrawler, I didn't realize I started using it (Aug '94) so soon after it first went live (April '94)!

I used Netscape instead of AOL in the computer lab at summer camp & felt so free! flying on fresh-grown wings!! this was probably mostly due to the fact that while at school i didn't have to worry about telltale purple underlined text linking me back to ate my balls or the dysfunctional family circus or w/e. when i got home i guess i downloaded & installed it on the family computer, when my mom noticed it it led to a HUGE dustup fight over downloading viruses etc. i think i was shut up in my room in tears until later when netscape's benign nature & links to the university of illinois at urbana-champaign were explained by my dad (class of '77)

whoops by "school" i mean "camp"
1995, doing work experience in the computer lab at the university my father works at; I'm left on my own for half an hour and allowed to look at this information superhighway thing on one of the Sun boxes, except I somehow manage to close/crash both Netscape and the xterm which launched it, and typing "netscape" doesn't bring it back, and I get in a bit of a panic trying various things which don't work (lol WindowsDOS user), and then I can't even clear them off the screen before the head of CS gets back and rolls his eyes at me

Also, a year later, downloading every Pavement tab the internet has to offer, and being confused by these strange new mp2 things that Addicted to Noise has on its site, but they're pretty big so I mostly stick to the 15-second clips in .au format.
(Somewhere I have some kind of ridiculously low-quality acid jazz sample I stole from ATN's daily review clips and wrote a .mod file around, and I still don't entirely hate that track, but I've no idea what the sample was)

Ah, this was me! And then being laughed at by some geek who was all 'You don't have to LOAD webcrawler to look something up, you just type www.webcrawler.com/query?=whatever!'
