Original poll here: The Michael Caine POLL (Pt. 1: 1964-1982)

(I had to cut a few to make the poll fit, and didn't think there was a chance anyone would be picking The Muppet Christmas Carol, Jaws: The Revenge or Stallone's awful Get Carter remake)

Hannah

admrl, Saturday, 13 June 2009 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

Mona Lisa over Educating Rita, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Quiet American. He can play such a good louse.

I don't get the acclaim for his Hannah performance; it's a nothing part, another Woody imitation.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 13 June 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

i feel as if i'm walking on air

compare to Branagh's!

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 13 June 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

It's a great Woody imitation.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 13 June 2009 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

Torn between 'Children of Men' and 'The Quiet American'.

James Morrison, Sunday, 14 June 2009 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

Quiet American, honorable mention to Mona Lisa and Shock To The System. Totally forgot dude did a steven seagal movie.

da croupier, Monday, 15 June 2009 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Shit, Michael Caine was directed by Steven Seagal.

da croupier, Monday, 15 June 2009 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

Great wig, horrible accent in that one. Doesn't he fall into a vat of oil?

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 June 2009 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't seen it, but with Caine, John C. McGinley, R. Lee Ermey and Billy Bob Thornton in what appears to be Steven Seagal's Billy Jack I really should have by now.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

quiet american, with strong second place to dirty rotten scoundrels.

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 18 June 2009 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

lots of really good stuff here, even when he's in otherwise crappy movies. Oscar well-deserved for Hannah but I could easily vote for Children of Men or even Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (which is pretty stupid but he is great in it)

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is stupid in a very smart comedy-chops way; he, Martin, Glenne Headly all brilliantly cast.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 19 June 2009 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't seen since 1989, but I remember that scene near the end in which Martin tries to run to Headly's open arms.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 19 June 2009 02:17 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone seen Half Moon Street? I saw only a bit when I was young -- nude Sigourney!

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 19 June 2009 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

That was probably the last time Steve Martin was really Steve Martin. OOOOOOOOOOOOKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA

xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 19 June 2009 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

I think he's brilliant in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and that got my vote - I shudder at my memory of going to see the beyond horrible 'on deadly ground' with my folks while home from break.

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 19 June 2009 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

"Why does he have that cork on his fork?"

James Morrison, Friday, 19 June 2009 05:36 (fifteen years ago)

This shit life... we must chuck some things. We must chuck them... in this shit life. There's always looking after. FTW

Hannah in a walk, one of my favorite movies to boot.

Might have been my second choice. It's not the funniest movie I've ever seen or anything, but Morbs is right in that the casting is genius. And it's a damn funny movie.

Educating Rita would be great if Rita were better.

it's a nothing part, another Woody imitation

I don't think it's that at all, even if it was written that way. He makes it his own completely, which I think is what the Oscar was all about.

twelve years pass...

I doubt I'd ever go to see Best Sellers in normal times, but with the scarcity of new releases, and no certainty that theatres will be open much longer, I did. Hated it from the very first line. The new-found celebrity of Caine's author seemed to be vaguely modelled on Network, which is not exactly the first '70s film I'd look to for good ideas. When Aubrey Plaza's father showed up, I honestly thought it was Martin Short behind all the decrepit-old-man makeup; thought he was going to ask for a bouncy 'C'.
