The Union Jack May Be Battered, But It Isn't Shredded

*whew* Well damn, THAT was a close call between England and Sweden. Though I suspect the Brit papers will be moaning that "we didn't totally win", a tie is certainly better than a loss.

Best moment? That corner setup between Becks and Sol Campbell (24th minute). Beautifully played. [Mr. Posh still has game, even after that busted foot.]

However, is just me, or did the team's overall youth work against them?

St. George's Cross. Not Union Jack. Yes, I'm a pedant...

The youth wasn't the problem. Vassell was a revelation, probably the best thing on the pitch all afternoon. England were too naive after the first goal went in, they sat back and allowed an, at best, average Sweden side back into the match. Mills was a disgrace out there, the midfield in general was a complete joke. You guys really are going to miss Gerard this time round, aren't you?

Anyways, I'm off to await the Azzuri's kick off...

the american commentators were already discussing how england's chances in 2006 were much better. michael owen is only 5'7"!?! by rights, sweden should have won, as they has loads of missed opportunities the riser over the net when the man was wide open and then larsson's miss near the end when he slightly fumbled the ball. but then i know next to nothing about futbol. more concerned about the stanley cup finals actually.

I was quite depressed earlier - it wasn't just the result but the generally awful we were. Then I remembered after Ireland in 1990 (drab opener, unlucky draw against fancied opposition before gaining crucial victory against African opposition). I also remembered Switzerland in 1996 - awful performance. Then there's Portugal in 1986, which was worse than the lot.

And so the gits have me optmistic again. Ian Wright also helped pushed me over that precupice of caution with his infectious enthusiasm. Curses.

Mills a disgrace?? I completely disagree, he had one moment of stupidity but other than that he was pretty solid, made some very good runs and was the main outlet from the defence in the first half.

Agreed on Vassell though, he certainly has a few tricks, but as I said on the other thread Heskey was my man of the match, he was everywhere, defending, holding the ball up in the opposition half, closing down defenders. He had a huge game.

I am mystified by your belief in Heskey. He works very hard, but I thought he contributed very little on the left, and not much when switched inside. I think his lack of variety looks like a very big limitation at this level.

A huge shocker! Right up there with "Beauty queen develops zit on nose" and "Driver in parking lot dents fender against light standard".
