What would your gala look like if it was YOUR golden jubilee?

Dan Perry, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I dont know the rest, but it would definately have atomic kitten, the corss could join in too if they wanted

Chupa-Cabras, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

A Sex Pistols reunion command performance. ;^}

And yes to Momus, Pet Shop Boys, and the art installations you described (but I'd keep the 19th century and earlier stuff for myself).

j.lu, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say to Kevin Shields, "You have the command of the nation's power structure and I've impounded all amps everywhere to do your bidding. Go for whatever you want to do."

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont really like crowds and stuff, so i would have pizza party with chan, except if she doesn't like pizza, then she could have whatever she wanted! my treat!

Ron, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it would be in Macarthur Park for a start, with lots of green icing flowing down.

Queen G of the copas mundiales, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

cuba libre (nathalie), Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Poison, Megadeth, Slayer, Dinosaur Jr and the Beach Boys. I'm kinda looking forward to the party in the park...Mis-Teeq and Brain Wilson are playing!

jel --, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

dude i will go to jel's party (but are we talking old beach boys vs 'new' beach boys) because i've seen the "new" beach boys. not on purpose, mind you: i was at a rollercoaster park in new jersey, of all places, and 'the beach boys' happened to be performing for free at the park that nite. this was about a year or two ago. oh it was the saddest thing ever but i couldnt stop watching because it was like watching some horrible atrocity being committed or something - you can't help but watch when it's happening right in front of you - it's the morbid factor. anyway no brian wilson obv. and roly-poly dudes in hawaiian shirts singing 'good vibrations' muzak for an audience of parents and kids who were there to see the DRUMMER (note: the drummer was john stamos of "full house" sitcom fame) and would cheer and shriek "JESSE! YEAHHHH!" whenever stamos strutted around the stage in his black leather pants and played wanky drum solos (yes it is possible to play wanky drum solos! believe!)

see, it's a memory that will plague my brain for life. sorry i had to share it with y'all.

geeta, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw the new Beach Boys last year, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and a bunch of guys in Haiwaian shirts...it was hmmm okay...but Brian Wilson this year was superior. I think it'd be the Live in London era Beach Boys, but that'd still mean no Brian. So, perhaps it should be a fantasy late sixties BB's with BW.

jel --, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian, Le Tigre, The Aislers Set. And Queen.

Mark C, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking sides: Belle & Sebastian vs Will Young?

Dan Perry, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian *backing* Will Young.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Terrorism and natural disasters are nothing to joke about...but what if some tragic, devastating accident were to hit the venue where the announced performers will be gathered?

(;^})

j.lu, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be callous and wrong to shout "CRISTAL FOR EVERYBODY!" wouldn't it?

Dan Perry, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ATOMIC TITTEN!

RickyT, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd buy that for a dollar!

Dan Perry, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Queen would like Belle and Sebastian

Ruby Wax to Kermit: "Is what I feel for you legal?"
Kermit: "Maybe not in the states, but it is here"
*big cheer* [from the bestial nationalists/US exiles in the house]

I genuinely assumed the foetal position during Ben Elton and hyoerventailated until he went away. Elton John and Annie Lennox were fantastic, much to my suprise.

Will Young was shite.

Brian Wilson = John Shuttleworth. v.v.boring until ribbon controlled Theremin came in.

Ozzy's way of moving about the stage = Excitedly running on the spot very badly. Also I liked how he look like if he was about to burst into tears if he ever stopped trying his hardest to entertain.

Brian May can fuck off (his solos = v.rub).

At first I thought it was Gary Numan singing Bohemian Rhapsody. That would have been ACE.

When Dame Edna Everage came on, my punXor fantasy was for her to ibe the one to introduce the queen arriving. And she fucking did. "The Jubilee girl " In many ways I think she's the only one who understands the queen. She is my GOD.

Tom, can you delete Paul McCartney please?

"Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl, one day I'm going to make her mine".

Ozzy Ozbourne singing backups between the lines on All You Need Is Love. I was praying for "Motherfuckking Love Y'all". Alas no. Also expecting him to run and kiss the queen at the end. No such luck.

Tom Jones did not look happy having Kermit n his shoulder.

I WUV VER QUEEN.

Graham, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

she looked as if she'd been forcefed four large tins of cut-price catfood: haha the monarchy has been reduced to a promo stunt for QUEEN: THE MUSICAL

graham who were all those "punk" lookish chiXoRs on-stage, they looked like the cast of cats gone goth? (the sound was down) (as i am not a complete mentalist)

mark s, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ben Elton induce massed rage in Olympia Towers. How weak was his material? Jokes about herbal tea are surely 15 years past their sell buy date. Was he always this irritating?

RickyT, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

always, yes

mark s, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark: Link your 2 paragraphs.

Graham, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark S: we assumed that bunch of people got up like cut-price extras from The Tribe (wouldn't it've been better if they'd had the Tribe cast? Representing the Commonwealth and all?) were also from Queen musical, representing the rebels of its musically-repressed planet. How bad was Emma Bun Tin? She's like some cryogenically preserved member of Pan's People , the last working example of a twinkling, simpering English amateurness cack-handedly 'interpreting' a world of modern pop too big and shiny for her. She looks like she should be advertising Slimcea bread.

Ellie, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I successfully avoided it all save for the last few teeth-grindingly awful parts of Macca's set (but "Hey Jude" was okay). Disappointed that HM did not sing on stage. The fireworks looked a mess on TV but the climax of the display with the streams of fire flowing down the front of the palace was impressive.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

when charles was reading out his speech, the queen was VERY CLEARLY thinking "hurry up you slowcoash bastard i hate you i hate you all i hate everything hurry up hurry UP i wish this would END end NOW end NOW shut up oh finish NOW PLEASE i'm going to faint i'm going to die i'm going to vom I WISH I COULD BEHEAD THE PPL WHO RUINED MY JUBILEE HEIR APPARENT I'M LOOKING AT YOU ohgodohgodohgod not the fkn national anthem CHARLES YOU ARE SO GROUNDED"

mark s, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian Wilson was clearly the best part of the show...and I'm sure he had absolutely no idea who the Corrs, Atomic Kitten, Emma Bunton or even Cliff Richard were. It was good to see him hanging out with Ozzy at the end.

Brian May, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton & Paul McCartney = grrrrrr...get them off!

The Motown bit was a travesty, classic songs destroyed and trodden on.

Though, I really did quite enjoy the show! Fireworks yay!

jel --, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Like I thought, classic and hilarious start with Brian May, wind in hair playing the National Anthem.

May not like Will Young but brass balls to sing with Queen on We Are The Champions

Brian Wilson looked pretty good - haunted but at least smiling during his set. Usual hand miming to the songs though. Royals looked bored with it. Looking forward to seeing him for the second time later in the month

Not sure Rod Stewart didn't give the Royals two fingers as he bowed at the end of Handbags and Gladrags. His voice has totally gone - still sang better than Bradley S-Club though

Ruby Wax, clearly nervous and unable to improvise to fill the spaces - had to pass back to Theakston too early and fluffed Brian Wilsons introduction completely. Ben Elton also appalling and unfunny - bet Tony didn't appreciate the transport digs (though pathetic).Dame Edna was good as were the two from Goodness Gracious Me

Technicians screwed up on many occasions especially by not turning up mics on time so missing lots of vocals. In some cases this was a distinct advantage

Enjoyed McCartney, cheeky wee Her Majesty at start didn't seem to amuse Queenie

Best moment of the night though was Charles speech at the end - "Your Majesty, ladies and gentlemen...Mummy". The Queens eyebrows shot up so high it was hilarious. Could tell she didn't appreciate that and that Charles was getting sent straight to bed when they got in as punishment. God knows she could have cracked a smile.

mms, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

haha she HATED EVERY SECOND!!

mark s, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

HM is OTM!

Brian May said (this is a genuine quote from BBC news):
"I couldn't get a note wrong, it was probably the best I've every played it. It was such an adrenaline rush, I cannot describe it. It was like a roller-coaster.

"On top of the Palace - I don't think there is anywhere else you can go after that."

!

Jeff W, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

but was there any bangbuss?

Queen G of the Whale-like Testivular Elephantitus, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

EW.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

PERVERSION. There should have been more of that.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)
