I just realized that this does not make as much sense as the other poll since these two weren't competing love interests but it's ok - it can be about general awesomeness cause they're both pretty great.

Back in the day, it would have been Keith by a mile, but now I think I would appreciate Duncan's confidence in his own opinions and place in this world more than Keith's misplaced discontentment, plus Duncan would be handy in a bar fight.

Yes, imagine that. My answer is the same -- somewhere along the way I stopped being a teenager and now I don't fancy teenagers anymore. I want to be around grown-up people, and Duncan seems way better prepared for life.

They are both awesome but I'd def go for Stoltz.

Also I think Keith is really shallow. In Pretty In Pink, for example, I got the impression that Andie was minding her own business, designing hideous clothes and laying plans to GTFO of her podunk town when Blane asked her out, and she was pretty eyes open about the whole thing, which made her more appealing as a character. But Keith was all "Wah, I don't fit in, I want to date this popular girl and be popular and spend all my college money on earrings even though smoking hot and totally badass Watts is totes awesome and loves me." Pfft. I mean, I know Keith ended up with Watts, but I like to think that Watts was like, "You know what? Thanks for the sex, but go fuck yourself" and then married Duncan. Or Andie. No! Iona.

LOL but yes what you said is OTM. Also, you know Duncan had a heart of gold and was really awesome and sensitive when it matters.

What was Keith's job again? I haven't seen this movie since it came out when I was in junior high.

I vaguely remembered him having some sort of practical job - but a mechanic, fuck I'm sold - think about it, the guy could design album covers and fix the tour van. Wait - are we speaking as ourselves, or if we were the Mary Stuart Masterson character?

This is by far my favorite of the John Hughes mid-80s run.

Jenny's take on Keith a few posts above is totally OTM. 22 years later, he's probably divorced, a deadbeat dad and doing car repairs out of his own garage. Duncan, otoh, went on to a stint in the Coast Guard, discovered a love of cooking, and now owns a bistro in the suburbs of Chicago where his wife handles the books and his three children alternate between waiting and working in the kitchen with dad.

I am glad people are bumping this thread cause it means I get to look at those pictures of EK again. Sweet.

On the other hand, Duncan could be the pot-bellied door guy at the local dive bar living at home with his mom, hoping one of the regular bands at the bar makes it big so he can be their roadie.

Nah, the man knows how to hustle, and how to tell bullshit from not-bullshit. He would take care of business and go out and find a way to make things work out -- he's a bad boy, but not a stoner.

Mind you, I have seen this movie all of once.

Keith does seem more likely to be the deadbeat dad type, but they both strike me as guys whose glory days would be long gone by the time they hit 35.

It's sort of fun pretending things are sequels when they really aren't. Like pretending Kevin Bacon in The Woodsman (where he's a pedophile who gets out of prison) is a sequel to Footloose.

YES thank you. I couldn't remember if it was a Stephen King short story or a David Foster Wallace thing or some other movie, and it was two of those things. Also probably OTM. RIP Duncan.

Something that's bothered me for a long time, but still think makes the scene better, is that Craig Sheffer says "You're gonna have to beg" and THEN Elias Koteas slams the door open with all his crew and says "I don't think that's gonna be necessary." How'd he hear it from outside with the Charlie Sexton blasting on the stereo and the sea of people between the stairwell and the front door? IT DOESN'T MATTER, I SAYS.

HUH? Heathers had adult irony in spades, thank God, unlike the Hughes grist. This is the best of JH because it's a remake of Pretty in Pink with a more attractive cast.

Here's a question - I'm having a disagreement with a friend because I think it's implied that SHeffer wets himself out of fear in that scene. Keith says "There's nothing I can't do to him that he hasn't already done to himself" and both he and Lea T. look down at Keith's pants region. My friend K says I'm making this up entirely. Good soundtrack, always drove me insane that the Charlie Sexton song wasn't on it (especially since he was an MCA artist too at the time)! I put "I Go Crazy" and "Turn to the Sky" both on about a zillion mixtapes in high school.

Which is interesting because the whole reason I bumped this thread is cuase I'm watching house and the male guest star looks sort of like a cross between Meloni and Koteas.

Elias Koteas: That was the summer of 1986. I was 25-years-old, fresh out of acting school, exhilarated, living in Los Angeles for the summer. The joy of being in Hollywood—everything was new. John Hughes, I had auditioned for him for She’s Having A Baby, and he liked me enough and was interested in me enough to set me up with the director, Howard Deutch. I remember auditioning a couple of times, and each time felt more fun and improvisational. They just let me improvise, and I felt so free and uninhibited.

The character on the page was this huge, burly-type guy and they saw this little glint in the eye—this joie de vivre—and they let me play. There was just so much joy in playing that part. I felt like there was no wrong way of playing it, as long as you were just committed and had fun with it. The freedom that I felt doing that part, I long for that. If I could go back to that… There was no fear involved. There was just a complete unabashed, free, moment-to-moment joy.

The A.V. Club: So the scene where you’re intimidating Craig Sheffer, and you finish by putting your head on Lea Thompson’s shoulder, and she starts to crack up—that was made up on the spot?

EK: I just made that up, yeah. Howard, God bless him, he did so many takes, and I kept thinking to myself, “Hey man, however many times you want to do it, I’m here.” To me it was just all about not being self-conscious in front of the camera, making choices off the cuff, living in instincts, and having a good time. It sounds very simple, but it felt just free. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve somehow been there. There was an openness to the whole thing. They really let me go. I thought, “My God, this is great!” Whenever I come upon that movie on TV I think, “My God, I’m just a baby. A 25-year-old baby.”
