He definitely was. I met him in about 1981/2 and he was surrounded by swooning indie girls. and he did this "I'm so shy" thing, hiding beneath his fringe and that ALWAYS got the ladies. I think this pic is perhaps a couple of years later but you get the idea.

I have to say that she's also unbelievably *nice* - in a really open and lovely way.

I was really not expecting that - I was expecting her to be a bit of a diva, and most rock stars treat their support bands like total shit. But The Bangles - and especially Susanna Hoffs - were just so lovely and sweet - thoroughly admirable people on every level.

I have a Susanna Hoffs Rickenbacker guitar! It's very nice, but a bit battered. Michael Steele was always my most <3<3<3 member of The Bangles, but la Hoffs is v v hot. "Dover Beach" is so so so fucking good, as an aside.

Really liked 2011 Bangles alb Sweetheart of the Sun: yeah their signature sound---killer cover of "Open My Eyes"---but not retro in the I-don't-wanna-grow-up sense; they reference personal current events, like kids growing up, with out getting all autumn leaves. Should check solo, but can't bring myself to check the ones with Matthew Sweet, because Matthew Sweet (could only stand him with Quine etc, and one of his later albums actually made me cry from boredom; didn't know that was possible. Thanks for the learning, Matthew).

Another stab: think if you liked Sweetheart of the Sun you would like the Sid 'n Susie because it is retro without the bad faith/false consciousness. He goes to a lot of trouble to reproduce the original arrangement of a given tune and then she (can't recall him having any lead vocals) sings the words and melody without really changing it or shouting it out or whispering it or jazzing it up or otherwise goosing it with some extra slathered-on dynamics, somehow delivering a completely convincing performance without being that much different from the original or falling into the uncanny narrow valley of being too similar and falling short.

there's a parent of another kid who has been in my son's classes since kindergarten who always reminds me that he knew Susanna Hoffs at Cal around 79 or 81 or something. He's told me like 20 times. Today I posted about David Roback and he said "he was a 'friend' back at Cal in the day" and then publicly DMed me to tell me what an asshole Roback was and "Somehow those guys manage to fail along until they dupe the right girl". Anyway that was my Roback and Hoffs story for the day.

I’m too young to have seen those Bangles videos when they came out (we didn’t get cable in my house until mid-1990, when I was 7 years old) but Susannah is still my ‘80s crush. Which is funny because she and her bandmates definitely rep for the 60s. I should be a power devotee, but I find most of it icky outside of Big Star. I’ll always have time for the Bangles, though - and not because they had the taste and foresight to cover Big Star themselves.

A friend of mine brought to my attention a truly terrible song, "Sexy Girl," by Glenn Frey. (Well, yeah.) I looked it up after and saw that it was on an album called The Allnighter, which I at first confused for the soundtrack to "The Allnighter," the by all accounts also truly terrible Susanna Hoffs movie from 1987, which I don't think I've thought about since 1987.

I totally tried to rewatch The Allnighter, maybe last year because my spouse had never seen it (I have also made him watch Zapped!, Night Of the Comet, Towering Inferno along these lines). It's a really bad movie. Not even fondness for it. I fell asleep.
