sweet (although no way I would ever know how to master this)
― baaderonixx, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:08 (fifteen years ago)
It is incredibly easy! Just start tapping squares and then stop when you hit something you like; I've been fiddling with it for 3 minutes and have already created at least one awesome minitune.

(The layout helps; creating geometric patterns translates almost directly into neat tunes.)

ha of course the first thing I did on that page was recreate "Insomnia" by Faithless

I remember seeing demos of these; it seemed like they were custom-made machines for churning out JRPG soundtracks.

Wait, so it's just ten fixed notes in some mode they've chosen? I clearly don't have the ear-training to figure this out by listening, but the ten-note height of the grid seems ... not that widely useful
― nabisco, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:44 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, hold on, it's just two octaves, pentatonic, isn't it
― nabisco, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, pentatonic funns
― get money fuck witches (HI DERE), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:49 (fifteen years ago)
The ToneMatrix is pentatonic, too -- which I didn't get until I was like "how come it sounds good no matter what I do?" Then I tried to recreate Steve Reich's "Nagoya Marimbas."

Huh, I only just now listened to the YouTube at the top of the thread -- I guess I thought it would actually be a melodica tone.
― Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 18:19 (fifteen years ago)
v. cool stuff, with that iphone app it would be nice if you good blend notes to create longer tones. i didn't sit through the entire 8 minutes, but assuming it can't be done.

prefer the online tonematrix version, there's no way my toadstool sized fingers would be able to press an individual square
