23 dollars buys me the coolest summer film fest.

i've been doing a brisk business in vhs tapes at my store. i have to keep replenishing my stock. i'm gonna watch a bunch of these though.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

Haha I want reviews.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

rorret sounds cool:

"Anna and her slacker boyfriend go to work for the creepy, reclusive Joseph Rorret, who's just opened a movie theater that plays only classic English-language thrillers. Rorret obsessively spies on the audiences in his theater, savoring the fearful reactions of pretty women, then later tracking them down, dating and murdering them. As Anna fearfully investigates his sinister doings, one of Rorret's intended victims turns out to be a little stranger even than him...."

omg. after hours! wish i'd find that at the thrift stores here.

Ludo, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

The Late Show is a marvelous little detective film.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

that + Bullitt is about the only stuff i've seen from that list. (so that makes 3..)

the Late Show is a nice find too (indeed) i read this book by David Gilmour who put his son on a film diet and Late Show was one of the things he'd Stan for eternally.

Ludo, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

After Hours is nice, but it's hardly the best Cheech & Chong movie. They barely appear in it!

The plot involves the Captain America/Superman inspired super-hero called "Captain Invincible" (also known as Legend in Leotards, The Caped Contender and Man of Magnet) who is active during World War II and afterwards. Once a popular hero to all Americans he is forced into retirement in the 1950s following the government's persecution of him.

This takes the form of a McCarthy-ish congressional investigation which accuses him of being a communist (because of his red cape). He is charged with violating U.S. airspace by flying without a proper license, and wearing underwear in public. He disappears from the public eye, moving to Australia and becoming an alcoholic.

Thirty years later, his old rival "Mr. Midnight" re-emerges and steals a secret government super-weapon - the hypno-ray. The US government asks Captain Invincible to return, and the story follows his attempts to return to super-heroing and redeem his reputation.

my father bought the sharkey's machine soundtrack after we went and saw the movie. i did the same after we saw Thief (Tangerine Dream). my brother bought the Nighthawks soundtrack (Keith Emerson).

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

The Heartbreak Kid - always wanted to see that.

throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

finding happy new year is v. cool, fantastic movie

only god can sugg me (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

really want to see captain invincible.

Garbanzo (get bent), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

I love the original Heartbreak Kid. Two highlights: Grodin's army-buddy story to pacify his wife, and, of course, the big pecan-pie breakup scene.

clemenza, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 01:54 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't seen Heatwave in something like 20-25 years, but I remember it being pretty terrific, even though much of the Sydney urban issues flew right past me.

I like the IMDB keywords:
* Architecture
* Sydney Australia
* Architect
* Cover Up
* Arson
* Independent Film

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 06:34 (fifteen years ago)

haven't seen any of these.
yes, including pulp fiction.

ian, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 06:40 (fifteen years ago)

The Black Bird is a sort of satire noir similar to The Long Goodbye, but nowhere near as successful. Don't remember much of it other than a string of off-color jokes.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 06:40 (fifteen years ago)

Wow, I've seen 13 of these.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 06:41 (fifteen years ago)

"Happy New Year" is my fave Lelouch. Lino Ventura's excellent in that. Nice find!

Marcus Brody Ta-Dow! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 07:54 (fifteen years ago)

Another Time Another Place is a good film, I think you got a bargain there.
I am slightly obsessed with stories about Italian prisoners of war in Britain and this has the added bonus of Phyllis Logan with no clothes on.

Originally opened in 1964 (Ned Trifle II), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 08:24 (fifteen years ago)

After Hours, then Bullit, then pulp fiction, then never heard of the rest.

Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 12:39 (fifteen years ago)

After Hours FTW

remy bean, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 12:42 (fifteen years ago)

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 13:24 (fifteen years ago)

remy bean, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

This was $1 from a local VHS Video Store Going Out of Business sale bought just cos of the cover. It actually turned out to be a very cool, slightly silly hacker movie with low low budget and some wonderful acting.

Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

looks great!

scott seward, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah it is really cool, its about some after school secret hacker club where everyone is anonymous and wears these crazy masks and talks through vocoders. It has a cameo from a really young Lou Diamond Philips playing a punk rocker.

I got After Hours somewhere but still haven't watched it. Heard great things!

Adam Bruneau, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

wow, you haven't seen it? it's a trip.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

got more today at the thrift store. couldn't resist. hey, for 20 bucks in change, i say this was a steal. anyway, lots more that i haven't seen:

spetters (haven't seen this since the 80's. i watched it then cuzza rutger obviously.)

topkapi (love this. good addition to my store's video section.)

girls town (okay, love this too. just cuz lili rules in it.)

tearaway (um, 80's new zealand punks in trouble? i'm there! who's on the soundtrack!?)

nuts in may (mike leigh. looks great!)

normal life (okay, one of my top three ashley judd movies. love it to death.)

wonderland (liverpool punks in trouble? in the 80's? in a transvestite night club? i'm there!)

dragon princess (sonny chiba. good for the store. probably won't watch it.)

riddance (1973. hungary. kino video. we'll see. might be too slow for my fast food brain.)

dead of winter (arthur penn. roddy mcdowall. mary steenburgen. i must have seen this on cable?)

the intruder (french thriller. directed by serge leroy. um, great blurb on the back: "a film of considerable - if not really maximum - suspense." oops! hahaha!)

the beer drinker's guide to fitness & filmmaking (this looks great!)

my life and times with antonin artaud (looks bleak. and cool.)

hard labour (another mike leigh movie i haven't seen)

smile (classic! for some reason when i think of this movie i think of nashville and i might actually like this movie more.)

a better tomorrow II (good for the store. original 1988 vhs copy from tai seng video marketing inc.!)

funny dirty little war (argentina. 1983. black comedy about civil war and politics.)

organized crime & triad bureau (another good shoot-em-up for the store.)

the dolphin (brazilian movie about women who fall in love with a dolphin-man.)

the boss' son (can't believe this was ever in movie theatres. stars james darren and rita moreno. workplace drama. 1979.)

miracle mile (saw this in the movie theatre and halfway through it the power went out and never went back on. which was a weird thing to happen while you are watching a movie about the end of the world. didn't see the end until years later. they call this one a "cult classic".)

i will, i will...for now (elliot gould. diane keaton. paul sorvino. and a very young victoria principal. need i say more?)

scott seward, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

i will, i will...for now (elliot gould. diane keaton. paul sorvino. and a very young victoria principal. need i say more?)
