0-0 Ireland vs. Germany. Going home to watch the second half. Hooray!

jel --, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another goal for Klose. The golden boot could well be his.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

250-1 for the Golden Boot. Curses. If someone picked him for the award, then I want them to tell me 6 random numbers between 1 and 49.

Nathan Barley, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So I just woke up and found about the US game. What the fuck? I'm happy, mind you, I just can't believe it is all!

Really hope Ireland pulls out an equalizer toward the end here; I'm guessing they would have done so already if it weren't for the fact that they're facing Kahn. Man, fuck Roy Keane, these guys take it to the other team constantly.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ROBBIE FUCKING KEANE!

What a great match.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!

Get in!

You really, really, really, can't have enough of Germany conceding last minute equalisers.

Nathan O'Barley, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was a fantastic game, it never stopped flowing, and well done Robbie Keane. They'll be dancing on the streets of Kilburn tonight!!

chris, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's that word? Schadenfraude - that's it.

Just like old times - hoof it up to Quinner, flick on, bang. Lovely.

Nathan Barley, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was lovely

Matt, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It really is the only word that'll do.

Matt, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any germans fancy contributing?

Hahahahahahahahahahaha etc.

Mark C, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The possibility of Ireland going out though unbeaten remains, but also the prospect of a German exit despite an 8-0 win in their opening game! Hilarious!

(Apologies to all German ILXers, obv).

This happened to Hungary in '82, btw - 10-1 opening win over El Salvador, thumped by Argentina, drew with Belgium = third place.

A couple of fantastic days - cosy 7:30 kickabouts to ease you into the morning, then all the drama in games 2 and 3.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Roy who?

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Roy Hay of Culture Club.

Pete, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Getting signed off for two weeks on the sick during the World Cup - classic or dud? Plus I will be so doped up on various drugs that about all I can manage to do is to lay on the settee and er, watch TV.

Perhaps I will become interested in football after all these years. They should play matches in our afternoons too, though. I shall soon get pissed off with Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

David, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I could never get pissed off with Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

MarkH, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I see - 'phase 2' as '2nd set of matches'.

To repeat: really enjoyed US and Irish results. Fantastic.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't really see Germany losing to Cameroon. Their instance on playing Jancker is bemusing. A Draw was a fair result!

jel --, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ireland, Let us talk about ireland. how much of a chance do they have iin going onto the next round ?

anthony, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Good. If they beat Saudi Arabia (which is pretty much a foregone conclusion) and either Germany or Cameroon win their match they're through. So the only serious danger is if Germany draw with Cameroon, leaving the top three equal on points. If this happens, then the qualifiers will be determined using goal difference (ie goals scored by a team - goals scored against them). This could ba a problem given the eight Germany put past Saudi Arabia and the probable goalfest that will result tomorrow.

RickyT, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The situation with Ireland depends very much on the Germany Cameroon game but they are in a pretty good position (assuming Cameroon beat Saudi - and assuming Ireland beat Saudi).

If Cameroon beat Germany then Cameroon and Ireland qualify. (Prefered outcome) If Cameroon draw with Germany then Ireland must beat Saudi by more goals that Cameroon - assuming that Cameroon score less than 8. Ireland and Germany then go through. (If Cameroon score 8 or more then Ireland will need to score more than eight and Ireland & Cameroon with go through) If Germany beat Cameroon then Ireland & Germany go through.

So basically Ireland will go into their game knowing that as long as they beat Saudi Arabia by more goals than Cameroon does - they qualify.

Pete, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is why it's good to have a maths graduate about, so they can work out stuff like this for you ;)

CarsmileSteve, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it perversely funny or just plain sad that both the USA and Ireland have a good chance of going through whereas England...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I dunno, England still have an excellent chance of going through. I mean, they've only got to beat Argentina and Nigeria for a guaranteed place in the last 16.

RickyT, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

England will go through!

jel --, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst co-commentator so far = Taylor. Complete humour bypass.

Ally C, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taylor is useless. Inarticulate; making garbled, cringe-makingly pointless remarks that are of no use whatsoever.

Nice finishing by USA's Agoos in todays match. He was more use to the Portugese than Figo.

Ireland were rubbish.

DavidM, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A little fun. Not really World Cup related per se, granted.

"Nice finishing by USA's Agoos in todays match. He was more use to the Portugese than Figo."

This jackass is good for one act of shocking stupidity per game, but there's nothing he could ever do to convince Arena to bench him. Believe me, there are better US defenders, and there probably aren't worse. Thankfully the team has learned to play well enough to make up for his boobery.

Benjamin, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>Direct link love.

dunno how. wanna teach me?

stripey, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

E-Z.

Post your link like this:

< A HREF="http://us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/fifa/en/xp/20020605/i/107 4479115.jpg">text for link

Don't include the space before the first A and after the last one -- I'm putting that in so you can see the code rather it being converted to an actual link.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm, let me try that again!

< A HREF="http://us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/fifa/en/xp/20020605/i/107 4479115.jpg>text for link< /A >

Amend my statement to say that the spaces on either side of the /A need to be removed when actually creating a link.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and logically I forgot the quote marks after the end of the URL this time through. ARGH. Use 'view source' to see proper link illustrations rather than my tomfoolery. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you are a little inattentive today? do you?

Roby Baggio is the coolest man alive!

I beg to differ! (judging from your e-mails ...)

Haha that Baggio site is genius!

'I don't have any unquestionable thruts to tell you. Only my experience'

'The USA gave a lesson to Portugal: Germany can wait!'

'Send your battle's shout by the Passion Network ecards!'

Ally C, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When did the USA learn to play so well is what has me puzzled?

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Saw the Ireland and Germany Game, that was fucking brilliant.

TV Announcer: The Continental Soccer Association is coming to Springfield! It's all here--fast-kicking, low scoring, and ties? You bet!

Bart: Hey, Homer, how come you've never taken us to see a soccer game?

Homer: I...don't know.

TV Announcer: You'll see all your favorite soccer stars. Like Ariaga! Ariaga II! Bariaga! Aruglia! And Pizzoza!

Homer: Oh, I never heard of those people.

TV Announcer: And they'll all be signing autographs!

Homer: Woo-hoo!

TV Announcer: This match will determine once and for all which nation is the greatest on earth: Mexico or Portugal!

J Blount, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Senegal: most blatant penalty, best goal and worst tackle of tournament so far vs Denmark - and it was all the same player!

What happens if: Cameroon beat Saudi Arabia 3-1, draw 0-0 with Germany and Ireland beat the Saudis 2-0? The drawing of lots?

Michael Jones, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its goal difference and then goals scored and then results against countries involved. But in your scenario I think you are right - lots. (Thoygh letting in a goal from Saudi might tip them. Better off considering a scenario the results are the same).

Pete, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what was the score in the senegal match? it was 1-1 when I left.

jel --, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Denmark 1-1 Senegal.

Currently Cameroon and Saudi Arabia are at 0-0 and the send half has just started. Perhaps our assumptions above may not be founded?

Pete, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cameroon now 1-0 up.

RickyT, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Saudis unlucky, especially in the first half. Ok, revise above lottery scenario to Cam 1-1 Ger and Ire 1-0 Sau. And the Irish have never scored more than one goal in a match in the WC finals, of course.

(But I do think they'll go through now).

Michael Jones, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A goal for the new Spurs boy - hurrah!

Jonnie, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

who is the new spurs player Jonnie?

jel --, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Second half was fantastic - France remain in the tournament by the width of Barthez's left thigh. In fact, everyone in Group A is still in with a shout - head-to-head result rule might come into play with Senegal and Uruguay (but can't with France-Denmark).

Uruguay did retain their full complement, mainly thanks to the withdrawal of Silva.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Erm, of course Saviola didn't make the squad, did he? He can ben on buckie standby.

scott pl., Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, revise above lottery scenario to Cam 1-1 Ger and Ire 1-0 Sau

Hope you're keeping up with this, anthony. There'll be an exam at the end of the week.

Jeff W, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*be* arrgh! Cursed World Cup causing sleepless nights!

scott pl., Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wish I'd seen France: you boys make it sound fab.

the pinefox, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmm, it was okay, at least the second half flowed for awhile and of course if Recoba wasn't such an egomaniac Uruguay would have put France away. But what a horrendous transistion of midfield to attack the French have without Zidane, really shocking. Also I don't see the point of Wiltord, although Micou seemed a improvement on Djorkaeff.

Omar, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The truth about the USA. Both the team and the country.

BRianR, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

France 2002 = England 1986?

Was just thinking this today Mike, whilst watching a full replay of England-Argentina '86. Was too young at the time to pick up on Robson's ridiculous tactics i.e. leaving Barnes completely out of the World Cup until the final 10 mins of the final game, when he then succeeded in looking more dangerous than all other England players put together in the previous 80.

As I may have said before; have NEVER needed Zidane more.

Another winning bet today, 50p on Denmark 1 Senegal 1, Tomasson to score first. 20 quid. Thank you.

Ally C, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Get in Henrik! The Sweden v Nigeria game sounds like a classic. I fucking hate being at work.

Jonnie, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just knowing I missed the Ireland match pisses me off no end. Damn, the next match I can actually watch is England versus Argentina.

Now comes the problem of who to pull for....knowing that Ned and stripey would give me logical answers doesn't help;>

Nichole Graham, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be cheering for a draw.

Jonnie, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sweden v Nigeria was great stuff for 45 minutes, but the pace dropped in the second half (another scorcher in Kobe apparently) - Ljungberg in particular seemed to be running through thick soup.

Taribo West went off for an inordinately long time to get a head wound stitched and dressed, returned and his side promptly conceded a penalty. He seemed completely out of it for the last 20 minutes. Joseph Yobo struck a post late on, and Kanu (a late sub) almost chipped the keeper. Very disappointing, for a variety of reasons...

Michael Jones, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And now Spain are losing! This world cup is more twisty and turny than a dizzy snake.

Jonnie, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And now they're 3-1 up with seconds to go. Good grief.

Jeff W, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Highlight of this game: Chilavert almost bending in a free-kick when Paraguay were trailing 2-1. But he's the goalie! Bonkers!

Michael Jones, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Spain are through :) Another disastrous first half though, too many players weren't in it esp. Tristan, Barajas and that cabron Nadal. With Helguera and Morientes things started to flow in the second half and Chilavert helped us a bit on two occasions. Still, without some changes in the team (Nadal, Enrique, Tristan, maybe even Barajas out; Helguera, Morientes, Mendieta and Sergio in) Spain won't go far.

Omar, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well now...Owen almost had a sequel to a certain France 98 goal there...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And what do you know. That *were* a penalty. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Simeone and Beckham shake hands as they walk off together at half- time. Aw.

Argentina had more possession and, lest we forget, two really good chances just after Little Mikey's woodwork lesson. Sinclair looks tasty. Didn't fancy Beckham for the pen - he looked a bit shaky; seemed to adopt the Stuart Pearce method (thump it down the middle), but kept it low and just avoided the goalie's boot.

Nice, but I'm making no predictions.

Michael Jones, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

England look pretty solid, nothing special but after the first 10 minutes they got a good hold on the game. I think the story of the game in the first half is basically that Veron isn't playing very well.

Omar, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, good to see Veron replicating his club form at international level. Oh, and he's been taken off... his replacement Aimar is already looking useful.

Michael Jones, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, damn, didn't think it would happen, actually, but England wins. Wasn't pretty, but hey!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That performance deserves a thread of it's own HMS Beckham Bullet Sinks the Argies !

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is that was all the noise is?

mark s, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Argentina may be going out - the Swedes only need a draw and will be just as tough to break down as England were. Aimar started well but couldn't hit a barn door with his shooting, Crespo ordinary.

England really terrific in spells in the second half; I fear the afternoon heat in Osaka next Wednesday though, bearing in mind how badly they faded vs Sweden.

Michael Jones, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know I am not allowed on this thread but still I have a question: how come the heat affects us but not Sweden, which is surely a colder country than England? Unless they all practice in saunas or something.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because most of the Swedish players play in Britain so, er, what was the question again?

Jonnie, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shut it you old trollope. And all of you anti-climactic bores ENGLAND WON AND WE WERE BRILLIANT AND WE HELD ON TO A LEAD. I love life.

N. at Ally C's, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Next time I see you N. you're getting a slap for calling me a trollope.

Jonnie, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Join the queue Jonnie. I don't see why I should abandon a lifelong lack of interest in football just because a bunch of people born in the same country as me are playing a bunch of people born in a different country. And why won't anyone answer my question?

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It would be a different story if Syria were through to the finals.

Tom, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only if it was the finals of shopping and eating chocolate.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What a great day. A real chance that England (and Ireland) go through and that Argentina, France and Germany fail to qualify.

Billy Dods, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To attempt to answer Emma's question: I don't know.

My comment wasn't really based on anything as crass as "Africa's hot, so the Nigerians will love playing in the sunshine", but merely on the general lack of fitness a number of England players demonstrated last Sunday. The Swedes did seem to start a lot slower than England (perhaps conserving energy), and finished very strongly. Maybe the England squad is up to speed with the whole heat'n'humidity thing now. Perhaps it's a complete red herring and I shouldn't even have mentioned it.

Michael Jones, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma asks: how come the heat affects us but not Sweden, which is surely a colder country than England?

Reminder it was a draw ! England did not lose ! against Sweden !

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The thing is I seem to have heard the heat thing being mentioned quite a lot and it seems like a pretty crappy excuse for us being too busy eating pies to bother winning (yes yes except for just now). Or whatever the real reason is.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and DJ Martian Argentina = HOT England = COLD Japan = HOT so how come we beat them?

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma: Eng v Arg was played in a temperature-controlled indoor arena in Sapporo.

Michael Jones, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because it WAS INDOORS in an AIR CONDITIONED STADIUM WITH AN ENCLOSED ROOF !

GEEZ Emma - try and keep up with things ;) even Anthony is trying !

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It would save a lot of time if they just let the team with the climate most similar to the host nation win. Or of course the host nation itself. Presumably the bookies are wise to the fact that the result can be accurately predicted according to the temperature of the two nations involved?

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember that advice Steve gave you the other day Emma before you answer.

Pete, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

just let....win
you don't really get the hang of this 'sport' thing, do you?

MarkH, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

advice, what advice? hello i am at my house with cabbage and we watched the football and it was good.

CarsmileSteve, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you for patronising me Pete. I was just asking a question you know.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is obvious that Emma is now interested in the World Cup, I suggest she spends some time at BBC World Cup website - so when blokes chat her up at the bar/pub/club/..mixed sauna ..whatever/ wherever.. over the next few weeks she doesn't come across as a dizzy and distinterested blonde ;)

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but I thought men LIKE ditzy blondes!

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dj martian is a martian emma

mark s, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was too dizzy to pick up on that.

Emma, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DIzzy or ditzy - I wasn't patronising you Emma, itjust seemed that the temperature argument was going the way of many bus conversations.

NAd I've been to Japan and people - it isn't that hot.

Pete, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>>> "Africa's hot, so the Nigerians will love playing in the sunshine"

My favourite World Cup sentence so far.
