I once mentioned to someone I had met at a party that I was getting paranoid after a recent theft, and then told me in vigorous detail that using that term was offensive to anyone genuinely suffering from that medical condition.
It made me wonder which word should be used instead. Suspicious? Anxious? These miss the mark. I'm not sure that there is a real substitute, since paranoia has been adopted for this lighter, more frivalous definition.
I didn't ask the chap I was speaking to, as he preceded his argument by leaning over the table and giving me a solid, heartfelt punch on the shoulder, and spent the next hour telling me that I would be first agains the wall in a revolution due to my posh voice. I remember it well.
