I mean its depressing as hell and at some parts pretty boring, but its got Trip Fontaine, Kristen Dunst, and "Your a Stone Fox". So my ruling is between classic and dud.

I meant Kirsten.

I haven't seen it in years but I remember thinking that it was okay and that it might have been a little more interesting if it wasn't from the boys' point-of-view. I guess it's based on a book though so whatever. It's certainly better than anything Coppala's done for aeons.

I take it you mean "The Coppola Family if you judge their ouvre as a whole".

Actually I was just thinking about Francis (although the doc on Apocalypse Now! was pretty good). I've not seen CQ though. It might be fun.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

did francis have anything to do with it? I thought it was directed by sofia.

(nb:Despite appearances, I am not actually on a first name basis with these people)

we've done this thread dammit

book is good, soundtrack is dud; virgin sacrifices far more entertaining

Alex would that not completely and utterly decimate the entire point?

Daddy did work on the movie. I think as a producer. I'm probably wrong though. I'd say it was alright-not classic, not dud.

Man, you make it sound like somethinf from the golden age of Hollywood. It only came out in 1999. I liked it, kind of, for its feel. At the time I'd just read the book (whilst listening to the Air soundtrack on headphones). It's all a bit jumbled up in my mind but I think the film was like the book only less so. I think Sofia Coppola got quite a lot of help from her cinematographer Edward Lachman.

Does this not describe every film adaptation of a book ever?

the girl I had a crush on when I was 15 was swept off her feet by a 17 yr old mod with a vespa with a dozen mirrors. He just walked up to her and said "you're a stone fox" as if I wasn't even there, standing beside C. in my bad haircut and bag-lunch in hand slackjawed at actually hearing a kid use a real pickup line on another kid. Since that day, I have secretly wanted to tell someone that they were a stone fox.

and I liked the book and movie both a lot, but I have rotten taste by ILx's cultivated standards.

Does this not describe every film adaptation of a book ever?

No. Often a film fails to capture a book's essence (eg. Trainspotting), or deliberately goes somewhere new with the source material (eg James Bond movies).

With The Virgin Suicides, it was like it had got the quality of the feel right, it was just a less powerful somehow.

Okay, I suppose you are right this once.

Nicole, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Alex would that not completely and utterly decimate the entire point?"

Probably. But maybe that point needed to be decimated. I thought the girl's stories were interesting enough to hold interest without the unnecessary intermediary of boy's view. But that's just me.

sixteen years pass...

The soundtrack to this has sounded beautiful this afternoon (Ironing with a glass of red).
