A good summary I found on a web site:

The story begins in los angeles USA, Jerrica, a beautiful, sweet and intelligent young woman along with her little sister Kimber, they suffer their father's death who was Starlight music owner, a discographic seal of great importance in the country. the man was also philantropus and inventor.

Jerrica would have to be prepared and try to save her father's business which is been threated by Eric Raymond, a corrupt man who was her father's asistant for many years and now he's trying to steal starlight Music and become millionaire:

to achive this, Eric will present a new band; The Misfits integrated by three young daring girls; Pizzazz the leader of the group and daughter of an unconcerned multimillionaire man. Roxy a violent and ignorant young lady and Stormer an insecure and good feelings girl.

One night, Jerrica receive a present his father kept for her before he die, a pair of star form earings that keep a magic secret, suddendly appears before her an holograms with a woman form which drives her and her friends to a close autocinema secret room where is hidden the main computer called Synergy, which is capable of generate holograms as real as material, change form of things, create artistics and unreal images.

The girl will understand that her father has left her the most powerful and dangerous artefact ever built. This room also keeps tons of clothing and dozens of musical instruments.

Wasn't there supposed to be some sort of contest involving calling some number and singing the theme song? I remember me and friend rehearsing this ... I think we even practiced harmonies, but never entered the contest.

The Holograms' rival band are a punk band called the Misfits: petulant rich girl Pizzazz (Phyllis Gabor) and her cohorts: no-nonsense Roxy (Roxanne Pelligrini) and kind-hearted, sensitive keytar player Stormer (Mary Phillips), who are later joined by the manipulative British saxophone player, Jetta (Sheila Burns). (This group should not be confused with the real-life band The Misfits, led by Glenn Danzig.)

DJP, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 19:39 (ten years ago)

I would imagine that the guy who acquired the rights to Jem & the Holograms in a poker game didn't do much more than look at a picture of Jem & the Holograms before signing off on the movie. I wouldn't expect a faithful adaptation, and it wouldn't be surprising to learn that Jem's voice was overdubbed by Harry Styles through the whole thing.

Roland McDoland (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 13 May 2015 19:48 (ten years ago)

Some of the original voice actors, including Britta Phillips, are credited in this movie. Not sure in what capacity, though.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 19:49 (ten years ago)

They play old Jem and the Holograms in the present-day sequences, trying to find the Heart of the Ocean.

JEM, Transformers, and GI Joe were interchangeable: same vocal parts. I kept waiting for Megatron to show up playing keytar on "You Got the Touch."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 14 May 2015 01:47 (ten years ago)

A "good" Jem movie'd be such a betrayal of the shiftiness that made the orig so great

They should've gone FULL CARTOON like Scott Pilgrim, but apparently they only scrounged up a meager budget to start with. To do it right, you'd need more money. Doesn't excuse them from stripping all the crazy elements out and branding some generic price-of-fame tale as Jem and The Holograms, though.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 May 2015 01:51 (ten years ago)

more important: was it actually written as a Jem script, or was that later grafted onto an ordinary tweens-in-a-band story to try and trick thirtysomethings who remember the show into taking their tots to this instead of Peanuts or Hotel Transylvania 2? trailer sure looked like the latter.

Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:03 (nine years ago)

basically he works with the director alot via film school connection.. hasbro worked with them in the past on gi joe 2 and theyre trying to pimp out there IP for whatever they can get.. it was a low risk low reward move for them but I also think they fucked up in using Jem to appeal to millennials when the only people who get the IP is older folks who were confused and angry about the project from day 1. I guess there was the usual studio meddling and focus grouping that went on. tbf it tested well! lol

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 18:13 (nine years ago)

i will never see it so i am willing to extend all benefit of the doubt to your former roommate, and to the film - for all i know it could be a perfectly decent little story about some kids in a band dealing with fame and evil business people and stuff. the brand just seems like an albatross in this case. the original show, while liked, isn't that popular that you can count on 30-40-year-olds to roll out and see it in big enough numbers, especially if it looks nothing at all like the show they remember.

it would have been much smarter to try and launch a new show, IMO. something about the premise seems well set up for an episodic series of adventures, more or less like hannah montana if i understand things correctly. i always was under the impression jem fought crime and supervillains but wiki is telling me it was mostly music industry shenanigans and a lot of lois-and-clark-but-where-does-superman-fit-in stuff - well, that could be turned up a notch... but anyway i can see why they would shy away from doing a movie actually based on the show - it's a lot of work to set up a premise that's actually meant to keep a soap opera going, not a single story.

Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 19:42 (nine years ago)

The dolls were expensive! They came with a cassingle of music too.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 19:45 (nine years ago)

yeah it didn't make sense, it wasn't Jem for the 35+ year olds, and it wasn't Hannah Montana for the younger kids.. just misguided all around. then again it only cost 5 million to make.. .

Does anyone know the Klingon for T'ai Chi? (snoball), Sunday, 8 November 2015 19:10 (nine years ago)

"Jem and the Holograms," the movie reboot of the popular late-1980s cartoon, opened in wide release October 23 and has done so poorly that Universal appears to be yanking it from theaters after only two weeks. Though the movie is still in approximately 50 screens, it has disappeared from most theaters, and Universal isn't reporting any box-office figures for it after last week.
