Is it terrible to drink an entire bottle of wine by yourself in one evening?

I mean, I did everything I was supposed to do during the day - and then some. I returned a lost passport to the police, wrote a press release, did massive amounts of laundry, let my friends know I care for them, took my vitamins. I'm just bored and sad, I guess. It cheers me up to drink and listen to music. I don't even feel that drunk! But is an entire bottle too much? Do you ever do this? Tell me about your drinking habits!

only one bottle?

c.c. crabcock (electricsound), Monday, 29 June 2009 09:55 (fifteen years ago)

Well, just one so far!

Some facts: the wine has been "carefully blended from selected vineyards in New Zealand's premier sauvignon blanc growing regions". I am 153cm tall, 46 kg, have just had my hair cut. I am home alone, the house is very clean. It is winter.

I do it sometimes. As long as it's only sometimes, enjoy the music-booze fun, rainy.

I drank myself a bottle of vinho verde last night with dinner -- does it count if you drink two bottles with someone else?

ken "save-a-finn" c (ken c), Monday, 29 June 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

vinho verde i find almost impossible not to drink a whole bottle at once. it's just so... quaffable. but it has slightly lower alcohol content, so not quite the same as a bottle of white or red. i have drunk full bottles of white or red many, many times in an evening. it really depends on the duration of the drinking. if i open a bottle with dinner (or while i'm making dinner), at say 5 p.m., and carry on replenishing the glass until i go to bed, that becomes like 4 or 5 glasses over 5 or 6 hours, or longer, and i might never even feel buzzed at all. and there'll be very little hangover because the body's had time to process it as it goes. if i drink a whole bottle in a more compressed time, i will definitely feel it the next day, so i try to avoid that.

i think "a whole bottle of wine" sounds like a lot just because it's a whole bottle. but it's not really any different alcohol-wise than having 4 or 5 beers, or 4 or 5 drinks of any kind, in an evening. which plenty of people do routinely. (who, me?)

the only thing really wrong with not using a glass is that a glass makes wine taste a lot better. aeration. but if it's shitty wine, i guess drinking from the bottle would be ok.

^ I was just posting this same thing in different words. The bottle makes it seem somehow serious, but if you just had four sizable glasses, you wouldn't think much more than "eh, I might not have needed that last one."

With a long enough, good enough meal, a bottle a person can seem like hardly drinking at all.

No. I did it once when a friend and I unsuccessfully attempted to sneak into a horrible community theatre's production of Kiss Me Kate. We did this as we had a friend in the show but this theatre group was notorious for bad productions and we had snuck in successfully in the past.

Well, needles to hay, we got thrown out and had the whole tonight to ourselves now so we went to a wine bar and I was already kind of loopy on wine and said "hey what the fuck I will buy a bottle of wine for just little ole me", a cheapo bottle of wine that was only $24 and tasted like nail polish and rat ass.

One hour later, I was vomiting in the sink of the Applebee's next door...filling it to capacity.

A half-bottle (375 ml): fine.

A magnum (1.5 l): that could mean trouble. But right now I'm tempted to try it.

six months pass...

Well just did a whole bottle tonight. Wife was out earlier this Sunday afternoon and I was home with my 2 later teen childen deciding on what to have for dinner. Decided upon a nice Beef Stirfry with noodles. Preparing all afternoon watching HGTV and wanted to use some red wine in the beef marinate but was unable to find the bottle opener (daughter 19 yrs had it up in her room of which she got in shit for, either buy your own or return the items you borrow and move to unexpected locations). Anyways had to wait for her to get back home from work, no big deal. When she got home the beef was already marinated and did not need the wine for prep time but, hey, a glass for cooking with wuld go just fine. Well, starting to pull the marinaded beef out and the cutting up the vegies and the pots for the yolk free noodles and other pots, made me say yes to a glass of nice full bodied red wine. Started with boiling the water for the noodles and then stir frying the beef, it was time for perhaps a refill. Next came removing the beef and starting the vegees and shortly after, draining the noodles and starting to stir fry the noodles with strips of hot dried peppers and green onions. Well the dinner is read to server and everyone is home. Sitting down at the dinner table, it is now time for glass number 3. By the time dinner is almost totally consumed, I am looking at my 1/3 full glass of wine, thinking again that beef and a nice red wine go well together, once again as in previous sips. Anyhow, once finishing this glass, and helping with cleaning up the dishes, pots and frying pans, it was finally time to relax on a sunday evening. Empty, is there any more, sure, well fill her up. This is my 4th glass.... only 4 glasses in a 750 ml bottle, 200 ml each glass well maybe that is a lot, what do you think.
Anyhow, getting up and rinsing out the bottle to take back to the lcbo for a bottle refund and coming back in to the family room with my wife " " onlyt to hear, there is a name for those who drink a whole bottle........ Well there is a term for those type of people :).... anyhow, whatever... There is always a 1st time for everything. When you have a sore shoulder and a tooth ache, it just helps once in a while but you know what some people just cannot understand ANYTHING other than what they grew up with.....

Moderation is what I believe in.... moderation.....
