I watched this teevee programme last night - some crime thrillah drama thing-o. Anyway this crime-solver expert dude used some *coff* "algorythms" to "enhance" this photo of a girlie so they could see the killah reflected in her eye. all this from a REGULAR 5x7 PRINT! of course he solves the case and everyone lived happily ever after 'cause that's the rules of telly-land. but everyone knows you can't make a blurry picture unblurry, or superdupermegaZOOOOOOM a photo to automagically see details like that. you'd just end up with big sploodgy dots of colour. DUMMM!

in blade runner they enhance a picture so you look round a corner

but that is in the future so obv possible then

mark s, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, but you recognised it... [but mum, he started it, etc]

mmm, future. mmm, hovercars.

petra jane, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ya he sort of did that in blade runner. i swear he was actually changing the angle at which the camera had taken the picture of the mirror. now THAT is an algorithm.

ps it is odd to me that 'algorithm' is not in this 1957 websters collegiate in front of me. online dict. says word dates from 1894. what gives??

With a photographic print is is actually pretty amazing what you can blow up - but I tell you - you can't do it using a com-put-tah. (Digital vs analog FITE!)

The photo scene in Blade Runner was my favorite scene in the movie I think. By using certain kinds of technology you create of surplus of reality, or at least more than was there in the first place. The Conversation knocks this one out of the park by having the "enhancement" be WRONG, which appeals deliciously to the comeuppance instinct we have for all hubristic technophiles but perhaps it's a little too easy? since those wif the automagic enhancers are usually the ones who get to define reality; the orders have been sent; it's often immaterial whether their surplus zoomitude is OTM or not
