The book I'm reading at the moment is set in Sweden and I realized that I've always been kind of obsessed with going there one day. So, this thread is for all things Swedish.

ya erica, my gf got a grant to go do some research there last year and i accompanied her. we spent a week in stockholm and a night in gothenburg; both places are incredibly beautiful (gothenburg in particular) and filled with good-looking english-speaking swedes. everyone is very nice. the food is surprisingly good. everything is very expensive though.

ari is currently learning how to speak swedish--she wrote her senior comps on swedish furniture design in WWII. she knows more about sweden than i do.

you should read the sjowall and wahloo martin beck novels and also the henning mankell kurt wallander books. all very good swedish mysteries.

According to the description, it's the 15th annual contest to find the "Näck" of the year. "Näck" is a creature in Scandinavian folklore who's kinda like a satyr or troll or fairy, except that he inhabits a lake. Essentially he's the spirit of the lake, but he's not always benign, so he can make people drown and stuff.

touch my bum / this is life (daavid), Thursday, 30 July 2009 21:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I used to work with a bunch of Swedes, and along with being well-dressed, good looking and mostly dead friendly they all staved off nicotine craving in the (non-smoking) workplace by sucking on snus (ie. tobacco pouch things) all day. There was even a ritual sharing round of the snus in the morning as work started.

This in combination with the beauty of the country, much of what's been referred to upthread, and recently Fever Ray has led to me holding Sweden and its inhabitants in very high esteem.

I don't really know 100%, but I'm leaning towards this long distance hiking trail, walking a few sections; I'm bringing a rucksack with sleeping bag, tarp etc.

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 16:30 (one year ago) link

two weeks pass...

Okay, the long distance hiking part didn't really work out as I almost froze to death the first night out, alone in a forest with no water.. I retreated to Stockholm for the balance of the trip and I'm 100% glad I did (amazing system of rural bus stops, so you can get almost anywhere without a car)

I'd never been before but I was really impressed with the city as a whole... things were not as expensive as I expected and the weather was just glorious. The parks are amazing, and I would be thoroughly satisfied just wandering the canals and waterfronts, looking at old boats and stopping for a cold beer now and again

I expect I'll return next year, and maybe visit some other places besides Stockholm... my grandparents were part of the big emigration so I imagine I still have some family there as well, though that might take a little research. Overall a great and relaxing trip, and evidence that robust taxation can actually improve life as a whole

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 16 June 2023 22:18 (one year ago) link

I saw that route you posted beginning at Danderyd, a place I've passed many times on the bus between Stockholm and the archipelago, and I think you did the right thing focusing on Stockholm this time. It is so beautiful and rewarding.

I'm going to Sweden in July. Starting in Stockholm and going wherever else I can take a train to. It'll be my first real vacation since the pandemic. Super-stoked!

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 15 December 2023 08:30 (one year ago) link

That's awesome.. I think I'm going back in June as well. I mostly lurked around Stockholm last June, but I want to visit Gothenburg and maybe some other rural places

A guy I met in a bar in Stockholm crafted me a cool day trip, taking a ferry out to an outer island in the archipelago where his family owns a restaurant.. I wasn't able to make it last trip, but I intend to try next time. (But it could be a horror movie, and I'm the one on the menu!)

So ^^^^ I want to go back to Stockholm in June, but an old friend has invited me to Amsterdam, where I've never visited (he lives/works there, but is from California). When I tried add a third city to my itinerary, like San Francisco>Stockholm>Amsterdam, the price goes up exponentially, almost a thousand dollars.

Does anyone have experience with booking a quick RT flight while over there? I'm thinking RyanAir, EasyJet, something like that.. I've heard about really cheap fares for these kind of shuttle flights, but have no personal experience.

If you time it right, you can fly from STH to Amster with Norwegian for less than 100 USD

Mule, Thursday, 29 February 2024 06:45 (ten months ago) link

Thats probably your best bet.

Another alternative is Stockholm - Charleroi. Flights in June are $32 each way with Ryanair, and Charleroi Airport has a direct bus to Amsterdam (3 hours duration, 8 a day)

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Thursday, 29 February 2024 07:58 (ten months ago) link

And that bus is $10

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Thursday, 29 February 2024 08:09 (ten months ago) link

Thanks for the tips - I've already booked the RT flight to Stockholm, trying to decide if this Amsterdam side trip is worth the trouble

Elvis Telecom, how was your trip?

I was back in Stockholm & Gotherburg in June - Stockholm was sunny & glorious, Gburg was a little chilly and everything felt like it was under construction

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 17:40 (five months ago) link

I will be in Stockholm for 10 days soon, pretty stoked. a little overwhelmed trying to figure out all what we want to see/do. We’ve got an archipelago cruise booked and a few other things.

brimstead, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 18:52 (five months ago) link

You'll have fun no matter what you do... make some time to wander around Södermalm (away from the touristy stuff) and the island of Djurgården has a lot to do, including the Skansen Park/Museum, which is really cool

I just like wandering around the water and looking at old boats, stopping for a beer or hot dog here and there, pretty unstructured.. I get kinda bored in formal museums

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 19:14 (five months ago) link
