That Peformance deserves a thread of it's own !

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it was a rubbish penalty. shut it

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here is my considered response:

WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

jel --, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The scourge of the South Americas strikes.

DV, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan - you try to come up with better copy than that ! none of the dailies will match it !

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Alan -- the game itself wasn't much, individual flashes aside.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the look of that frustrated mullet manager of the Argies, pacing up and down in the second half ! superb

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned you mentalist - that game was a exactly the kind of chessboard game that football is all about. Why oh why did England sit off the ball though for the last ten minutes and

Bridge for Owen????

Pete, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Unsung heroes..Mills had a good game got some excellent blocks in, Sinclair had some good touches - a wicked shot in the second half.

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the correct analysis of the match would be something like - "YAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH! Yes! Yes! GET IN!"

Lynskey, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the argie split ends were quite impressive.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Argentina gonna win the world cup! ha! They'll probably lose to Sweden! Come on Freddie!

The match was great!

jel --, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well obviously the result is great, although it could set up a second round match against the Frenchies + Zidane and that will be the end of England. Argentina never got their rhythm going which was mainly due to the excellent work by Butt and Scholes with a bit of help by Daniel "Ego" Ortega. England's attacking game is bobbins though: long pass to Heskey/Sheringham: header to Owen if succesful Owen does his run, tries to score or dive. Repeat 50 times.

Omar, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There were some naff hairsyles - who woz that player with the naff 70s Italian perm that came on for Veron, looked dangerous !

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As an unbiased observer, England did play well in the first half and had flashes in the second. Argentina were disappointing though but all credit to England , especially for the first half.Rio was pretty cool throughout.

Jonnie, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was grebt.

Tom, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned you mentalist - that game was a exactly the kind of chessboard game that football is all about.

It wasn't completely horrible or anything, but it lacked a consistent spark for me. Mind you, I got up horribly early to watch the whole thing, so maybe I'm just viewing things through a sleep-deprived fog.

Well obviously the result is great, although it could set up a second round match against the Frenchies + Zidane and that will be the end of England.

I dunno, I'm not so sure about that now...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, well done England. Ferdinand and Butt immense. They'll still never win it, though. Unbelievably, watched the game with N. at my house! He had to phone a friend just to hear a cheer. Apparently Crespo is a paedophile.

Ally C, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Which of the tabs is going to quote "Rejoice! Rejoice!" then?

Tom, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon the Danes will teach France a footballing lesson!

Owen Hargreaves limping off = blessing in disguise?

jel --, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

GOTCHA!

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

National identity = supporting a football team AND NOTHING MORE. All the old symbols and myths live on -- there were twats dressed as crusader knights for God's sake at the match -- but in the guise of spectacle.

alext, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Goeff to thread!

Tom, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who would you start with now? Sinclair or Hargreaves?

Lynskey, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Could do without the naval warfare analogy but absolutely thrilled to pieces with this result. Don't agree England only pumped up long balls for Owen's pace (but if it works Omar....). How many passes did England string together before that Sheringham volley? A lovely move. Butt and Scholes were magnificent and Veron, Batistuta and Gonzales all substituted speaks volumes. Great stuff, time for another beer.....hic

stevo, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I be an honorary englishman? Watched it with the office people here, free beer, really enjoyed it. I cared and wanted England to win but wouldnt have been miserable if they lost. What a happy medium.

Anna, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would just like to point out that I don't think Crespo is actually a paedophile. It's just that I had this dream last night.

N. at Ally C's, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking cookies, that was Ronan. I doubt Anna feels like an honorary englishMAN.

Ronan, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevo I cheekly put: HMS Beckham Bullet Sinks the Argies - because it is the type of copy that the Daily Star/ Sun/ Mirror - would have come up with a few years ago - However I will be surprised if they use something similar tomorrow ? I may be wrong ?

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brilliant performance by England. Easily, easily the best of the entire tournament so far. Ran rings round supposed favourites Argentina - seventeen passes by England ending in a cannonball volley punched away by the Argie keeper. No-one has matched that so- far, not Brazil, not Argentina, certainly not the dismal France who'll be lucky to even qulaify.
Excellent blasted penalty by Beckham as well.
It should have - could have - been 3-0. Argentina got off very, very lightly.

We beat Argentina. HA!

DavidM, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How come EVERYWHERE seems to have had free beer and we got BUGGER FCUKING ALL? Today is conspiring against me to be a crock of shit.

Sarah, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Point taken DJ Martian, lets hope The Mirror + The Sun have grown up a bit and celebrate a magnificent win rather than the usual lumpen chauvinism + 'Argie' bashing (well one can hope).

stevo, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Get to the PUB Starry and your woes will magically fall away.

Tom, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that still leaves the Daily Star ..Beer, Breasts, Beckham and Bog standard copy !

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! God i enjoyed that.

Matt, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They are not unchaining me from the desk and I am STILL BROKE grrrrr and in a VERY VERY BAD MOOD!

Sarah, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AND AS SOON AS I POST THAT HE SPITS AGAIN!!!!!!!

Sarah, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was fucking brilliant, apart from the fact that I couldn't watch the last ten minutes as I was so nervous! I had free beer too! Whoever took Red Stripe to Steve's housewarming....thankyou!!!

chris at Carsmile's, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was me Chris. Welcome back by the way, and you owe me a pint for drinking my beer.

Pete, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you Beckham for making it unbearable for the non-English in this country for the next few days.

Only consolation for me is that it looks like Italy'll have the Yanks in the next round. God's own country vs The Great Satan...

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FUCK YOU ALL YOU BUNCH OF PISSANT FASCIST SALUTING MALVINAS MOLESTING MALARKY MONKEYS

Queen G of the Nil-All drawers, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am Welsh and watched it with a Belgian (Nath) (and Tom and Pete and SOAS-type people, cheers), so I am Mr Blasé.

Graham, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wondered when our resident Argentinian would post.

Pete, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Which is which? ...

stripey, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A matter of genuine interest, Omar: would you have said that being drawn in the same group as France would be "the end" of Senegal and Uruguay?

Robin Carmody, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aah, but that will be a Zidane-enhanced France, and therefore immediately hotter than shit-hot once again.

Matt DC, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We wait and see. ;-)

Reading the various comments around the web, I can only conclude I must have fallen asleep again at certain points or something (or else was noting an e-mail at the wrong time). Yay time zones!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>Reading the various comments around the web, I can only conclude I >must have fallen asleep again at certain points or something

I think most fans will call any game "exciting" when the result is in their team's favor (especially if the game involves a traditional rivalry like Argentina-England).

So if you did fall asleep, Ned, it was probably due to the game itself as well as the hour.

Like you, I didn't think the match was nearly as exciting as most ILE-ers say it was. And it's interesting that you and I feel the same way because we were cheering for opposite teams.

Since ILE is loaded with Brits, naturally, they'll be more excited about the result -- they have a bigger emotional stake in it. Also, they're probably watching it together with beer and friends down at the local pub, which contributes greatly to the perceived excitement of a game.

ILE Brits might want to keep in mind that out here in earlier timezones (the Pacific, for instance) we're watching each game alone in our beds in a slightly-paranoid ("musn't wake my spouse/my roommates/the kids/the neighbors!") atmosphere of early, early morning. If we're lucky, we've got a bowl of Wheaties and a cup of coffee to sustain us, and if we're smart, we've set everything out ahead of time so that we can jump into the shower, the clothes, the commute, and the workday grind the very second the ref blows his final whistle.

With such an un-ideal viewing environment, it's difficult for Pacific time-zoners to imagine that any game could be considered "exciting", unless it's _EXCITING_.

stripey, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the argie split ends were quite impressive

I think you'll find that they only have that position in American 'football', Alan - the game with all the padding, you know.

I thought it was terrific. I'm sure it wasn't as delightful a display of beautiful football as Brazil-Turkey, say, but England were superb, better than I thought they could be against such first class opponents, and thoroughly deserved the win, though sitting back so much as the game went on worried me. And withdrawing Owen, who was such a threat on the break as Argentina pushed up, seemed odd (unless he had brought on another quick man, like Vassell).

I was particularly impressed with Sinclair, and I hope he'll start the next game, with Beckham, Scholes and Butt completing the midfield. Butt was really excellent, and we don't need to be as negative against Nigeria, so I don't want to see Butt and Hargreaves together. Still not sure about Heskey up front - if Sheringham can play a full game (maybe even 60-70 minutes) at anything like the standard he demonstrated as soon as he came on today, he's the man.

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin: split ends, he was making a jokio about their hair...

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''I'm with Alan -- the game itself wasn't much, individual flashes aside.''

It was a good, physical game of football. Very tight. It was great for me because I can't believe it! We can go far in this competition now. Hopefully the injuries will stop.

Martin- agree on all of the points you've made bar Heskey. I think him and Owen go very well together. He's got strength and does cause problems but teddy is a super sub. We've got options there and that is good.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

would you have said that being drawn in the same group as France would be "the end" of Senegal and Uruguay?

honest answer Robin? Before Zidane's injury: yes. After that and Lemerre's weird insistence on playing with fuckwits like Petit, Leboeuf and Wiltord: no.

Omar, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin: split ends, he was making a jokio about their hair...

Ah, jokes, yes. If only these things were easier to spot...

You see, I was making a joke about American football positions too. I think we should have to add ;-) or LOL or something like this every time we make a joke. It should be a rule.

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lol

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

England best preformance of tournament? Naaahhh Let's face it, you scored 1 PK! And played boring, uninventive football while not leaving your side for entire 2nd half. Spain's graceful, beautiful 2nd half was much better ball- 3 goals and lots of kissing on the pitch!

Argentina are vulnerable in attack, midfield, defence and keeper's not the greatest. Seems a crazy thing to say about the so called favorites. They would be a completely different team w/ Juan Roman Riqulme, who is the best Argy player period, but wasn't even picked! What a shame that fans don't get to watch 1 of the worlds best and most attractive players.

Raul (probably the best player last season) said Riqulme was the best he's ever played against! Also leaving Savi at home when you have no strikers or speed is beyond a joke. Riqulme's brother was kidnapped for ransom a couple months ago And his family are always getting death threats. The football team is the 1 good thing Argentina has going for it, the public is desperite to win, their best stay home and England gets to celebrate. Very sad for the Argentinians.

Nicolette, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

England best preformance of tournament? Naaahhh Let's face it, you scored 1 PK! And played boring, uninventive football while not leaving your side for entire 2nd half.

Then you clearly did not *watch* the entire second half. The 17-pass move that led to Sheringham's volley? Owen's two surges into the box? Beckham toe-poke into the side-netting? Scholes' 25-yard volley after Heskey's shot was charged down?

England soaked up a great deal of pressure in the last 20 minutes, but Argentina created little. Ultimately, it's only a single goal win in a group match and I don't believe England will get beyond the quarters, but it was an admirable performance.

Michael Jones, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

England deserved to win, they deserved to win by more than one goal too. I don't care if Riquelme isn't in the squad, it doesn't really change the fact that England deserved to win that game and played well.

And as far as this "uninspiring" bollox is concerned, give it a rest. I really can't stand this, if you're not entertained don't watch it. They're trying to win matches not entertain people. You'd swear the Brazilians were kicking 2 yard tap ins over because they're souless or something.

Saying England play uninspiring foothall seems connected in my head to saying something about how kids these days have no manners, or how noone can write a bloody song anymore or something.

What was that Alan Ball quote about clowns?

Ronan, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in my day you could eat a steak and drink a pint of porter and still have change out of fourpence!! bring back national service!!

"a pint of porter"?

What that? Sound's kinda gross!

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

noone can write a bloody song

I think it's nice that Ronan is standing up for Herman's Hermits, hardly a fashionable band with most youngsters. People say that the young today don't know they are born, yet this shows that proper tunes are still 'with it', as I believe the kids say.

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Boy Jones is OTM. In fact he agrees, unwittingly or no, with the boy T.

Brazil look complacent to me.

the pinefox, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's nice that Ronan is standing up for Herman's Hermits

I see you're into something good here.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I sheeeit on you all with my melancholy ass tears

Queen G of the Risen Belgranos, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When do Brazil look any other way?

Ally C, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it me or isn't 17 passes actually that many? Real Madrid do that all the time. :) btw. the really foolish decision by Bielsa was leaving Solari at home.

Now what I was wondering: why doesn't England play in red all the time? I almost knew they were going to win when I realized they were playing in the red shirt. Save Mexico 70 and that game Poland made you look like fools in 73(?) your best games have been in red, right? But then you probably have had this discussion for ages. ;)

Omar, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i just watched the game and wonder why is it that south american teams are more excitng to watch. is it their possession style of play? european teams are anemic with inspiration in comparison. england got a generous call from the referee who did not return the favor when england fouled the permed fella in the second half. lots of missed opportunities for argentina and that accidental save by the english keeper off the one corner, lucky. for me as an outsider i would say england looks rather weak actually, i'd imagine nigeria will take them out. sometimes with all the hair blowing in the wind i thought i was watching the argentinian women's team.

keith, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where do you think they'll take us? The beach? or the cinema? :-)

jel --, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I gotta say, Mr. Posh does get 'nuff respect. That goal in the first half was priceless. I screeched---and does that sound hurt!

Apparently, not even a broken foot can drown passion for the game.

But Argentina just ran out of steam. For a few minutes there, I actually thought they'd have a chance in hell;>

one year passes...
an early strike from the martian i see

A transfer window comes again and david beckham's name fills more column inches, sometimes in the sports section, more often in the media sections.

talk of LA, talk of inter, talk of tottenham, marseille even

1) its widely acknowledged that beckham worked hard in madrid and is something of a grafter in terms of chasing a cause. but he seems unlikely to consider moves to bolton, boro, even newcastle, with only spurs deemed a uk move acceptable to club and player

while its obviously something of a drop after playing whole career at such a high level, why does it seem unique that beckham, someone who isnt afraid to work, won't go to such clubs

2) its also widely acknowledged he wont be going to a top 4 club. yet beckham is only one year older than shevchenko and ballack, a pair that chelsea have reorganized their entire setup to accomodate

3) wonder if he wishes he'd moved to barcelona after all now

Storefront Church (688), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

xrossing fingers he moves to LA and goes completely scientologically bonkers.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

I suspect that (the moving to LA bit, at least) is what Victoria would like him to do.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

I reckon even Spurs is unlikely. I don't think Beckham will ever play in the Premiership again, why drop down a tier and let your entire country watch your star fade? Especially when you can go to LA, be the undisputed big man of your team and eke out your career in the sun, preserving the good memories back home?

I know many other players have been happy to accept that, but there's never really been an English footballer like Beckham which makes him something of a special case.

And of course the idea of the Beckhams moving to Bolton or Middlesbrough is ridiculous.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

he should retire and make films?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if, like Stoichkov, he'll mark his time in the American leagues by crippling someone?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, he's going to either a) New York New Jersey Red Ball Metro Super Soccer Allstar Select XI FC b) one of those Arabic teams that pay you 2.4 million a game c) one of the Italian big three because of shirt sales potential.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

if beckham was not english, the idea of him moving to bolton or boro wouldnt be ridiculuous (i agree this makes the case of beckham unique)

it is fascinating that ballack, of a very similar age, is deemed worthy of a huge contract at chelsea, and the restructuring of the team to accomodate, yet the idea is almost laughable when it comes to beckham.

Storefront Church (688), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

i think he will push for move to italy

Storefront Church (688), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

He'd probably be a good fit for a newly promoted Juventus tbh, they've always liked a workhorse player with a touch of fanny dangle about them, and he'll provide a bit of glamour their year of players dropping dead all over the place and mass coruption has eroded.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

No-one went for SPOTCHA!

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

move to LA Galaxy practically a done deal certain according to some US news sites, but i guess they would say that.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

presumably he is resigned to the idea of never being selected for England again then in case he wasn't already

reverto levidensis (blueski), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

And of course the idea of the Beckhams moving to Bolton or Middlesbrough is ridiculous
