We have a 10-80 out here, a truck on fire, we have a man on the lift. We are unable to find the switch to turn the lift off, can't stop the dancing chickens. Send an electrician, we're standing by.

Zeno, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

Aguirre

In fact this is the only one of these I want to watch again.

He was only 21 years old when he 16 (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 23:19 (fifteen years ago)

Strange list: lots of shootouts, sex, capers, and one-liners.

Ali: Fear Eats The Soul, I guess. Maybe Pickpocket.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

Skip all of 'em and watch Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights instead.

It's not a very...fun list.

Couldn't be bothered finishing 'Cache'. It bites. (And decapitates.)

Great Expectorations (James Morrison), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

I really want to see Werckmeister Harmonies, and can't find the DVD at Blockbuster.

The artsy movie I can watch over and over again is Killer of Sheep.

Aguirre to me is just really accessible and endlessly watcheable. I suppose it is very bleak, but even when the existential dread doesn't jive with you the landscapes do. And there's just something utterly awe inspiring about a world where diferent civilizations were still making first contact, you know?

I liked Pickpocket a lot too even though I'm not entirely sure I "got" it; Fear Eats The Soul is one of the less obnoxious Fassbinder films I've seen and Magnificent Obsession is just fucking weird, that speech about insulation and all. Haven't seen the others.

"It's not a very...fun list."

the Sirk movie is fun, depends how you look at it (as a grotesque, extreme molodrama that is)
so is Strosek,in parts...

Zeno, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

Aguirre has Klaus Kinski and monkeys = endlessly watchable.

well I'm married to a limping, crescent-shaped abortion (sarahel), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

I love Werkmeister Harmonies, but I don't think I ever would've make it all the way through on dvd.

C0L1N B..., Wednesday, 15 July 2009 02:16 (fifteen years ago)

have to say i really want to see Sirk' Tarnished Angels (best Faulkner adaptation ever,so does the man himself said, and arguabky Sirk best movie, though i'd choose Written In The Wind) but it's difficult to find

Zeno, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 02:16 (fifteen years ago)

yeah,it's def. a theatre-only movie.
so much is lost in dvd

"Strosek has Bruno S. and chickens = endlessly watchable."

:)

Werckmeister and Stalker are both really slow ... they're total recovering from dental surgery movies.

"liked Pickpocket a lot too even though I'm not entirely sure I "got" it"

Pickpocket is one if Bresson finest excercise in accurate, minimalist, movie making, where action has the same meaning as word (or even more).
as always, it deals with issues of moral and faith in modern world.
the hero, is an existentialist character, in the style of Cammus "The Stranger" - a strong individual, who tries to create his own philosophy in a post WW2 world where all old philosophies had failed.
he tries to justify his "sin" (pickpocketing) throughout the movie, but---spoiler--- only in the end he understands that you can't live happily without love and compession.

Zeno, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

i watched stroszek for the second time recently and enjoyed it way more than the first. herzog commentary track is also great.

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

Obviously the Herzogs will win, but I put my vote to the other new German cinema guy.

bad crack (Eric H.), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

(maybe i should have left Cache out, cause it will probably win as a default)

What? Haven't seen "Fear Eats the Soul" in a while, so that

Nuts, whole hazelnuts, HEEUUUUUUUURGGHHH! (Tom D.), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

what i meant is that i think it will win, cause it's the most popular in my list, plus it's great.haneke only great movie imo.(didnt see the latest winner of Cannes of course)

Zeno, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

Stroszek is my favourite on that list, then Stalker. I might have to see Magnificent Obsession, i think I only saw 1 Sirk (Imitation of Life) (which is pretty good)

Ludo, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

cinema guy or gay?

both?

bad crack (Eric H.), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

(didn't know herzog was gay, though; bet he'd give great pillow talk)

bad crack (Eric H.), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

i can't believe i have Cache rated as a 7/10 on imdb, right now i am thinking it starts awesome and creepy, but then gets boring. (but i hate downrating it's unfair!)

Ludo, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

he meant Fassbinder...
