"'This' is awesome": a thread about This, an odd new movie channel on my cable provider

Anyone else (U.S.) out there get this This channel? pretty weird stuff. I've now watched Electraglide in Blue like 5 times and two months ago I didn't even know it existed. They've been doing some pretty wild horror stuff this last week. The Dunwich Horror (Dean Stockwell!). From a Whisper to a Scream was pretty crazy. Kind of a Twilight Zone The Movie style horror shorts potpourri. In one this guy in bad old guy makeup bones a dead chick. Well, nine months later.... little zombie lovechild crawls out for revenge. Good stuff. Basically it shows movies starring people you've heard of but have never ever heard of these movies they were in. Fish Don't Blink anyone?

Oh, I assumed this (THIS) was just a Chicago thing.

jaymc, Friday, 17 July 2009 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

ha I get this channel and I've watched some really shitty movies

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 17 July 2009 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

Never heard of this, but haven't actually had TV/cable for like eight years. Is this a standard cable thing in the U.S. now? I hope so.

watched a really crazy movie from the 70s with christopher lee where he played an aging horror movie star, which mainly seemed to be an excuse to use old footage from his other movies to fill up time

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 17 July 2009 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

it's not cable, since i don't have cable. it's like an extra digital channel

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 17 July 2009 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

the other night i caught christopher lee in howling II: your sister is a werewolf.

according to the little info out there, it's a joint venture between some chicago channel and MGM. so all the movies are these weird MGM movies from their vaults. all post 1968. Turner Classic Movies has rights to the pre-68 MGM stuff.

andrew m., Friday, 17 July 2009 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

Are you on Comcast? I'll have to check this out while I'm rocking the kiddo.

yeah. channel 15. or 9-2 for HD.

it's also weird that they rarely if ever tell you when exactly anything is coming on during their station spots. it's all "next week on This" and then they show clips from five movies. ok! i'll tune in next week some time!

i did find this after much looking: http://www.this.tv

as you can see, from a whisper to a scream is on again tonight. highly recommended. pun intended there ;)

Not all of it. MGM still owns United Artists flix of all ages. They've shown on This stuff like The Little Foxes, The Woman In The Window, and newer things likeLord Love A Duck and Topkapi.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

kid missed the big outfield catch, losing the game, now he's running around town by himself to the strains of a morose '70s ballad, while the team captain drives around looking for him

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

totally incoherent dialogue between kid and coach:
kid says his dad hits him
coach: "maybe somebody hurt him once"
kid: "i wonder if he knows i love him?"
coach: "have you tried telling him?"
kid: "nah, he'd just call me a sissy ... he's not really such a bad guy."

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

now they're recruiting a deaf kid to be their star pitcher

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

they already found a japanese karate expert who hits a bunch of home runs ... what a gang of misfits!

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

fat kid catcher?

mile high guy (brownie), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

not that i've seen - the team got in a fight with the team they have to face in the championship. japanese kid saved the day with his karate but not before the deaf pitcher's arm was dislocated. now the pitcher has to have some kind of experimental orthopedic procedure to try and fix his arm before the BIG GAME

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

the honeymoon couldn't last. settled in last night for a This watch session and they've switched it up on me. my channel 15 is now something called Tuff TV. it sucks so badly. and not in a good way like This.

"TUFF TV is a new television network targeted at men – and the specific pursuits, interests, and hobbies that guys are passionate about. TUFF TV is the first of its kind digital broadcast network that offers a unique and synergistic combination of eight specific programming genres on one channel. TUFF TV content includes lifestyle, outdoors, motorsports, contact sports, collectibles, fitness, reality, and movies. TUFF TV headquarters, including operations and distribution facilities, are based in Chattanooga, TN with programming offices in Atlanta, GA"

so, so disappointed.

i'm jealous. TUFF TV, which recently replaced THIS on our system, is just not cutting it.

andrew m., Monday, 24 August 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

perhaps if i lobbied our cable provider. "i cared so much for THIS that i started a thread about it on the internet!"

andrew m., Monday, 24 August 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

that description of TUFF makes me want to throw things. i'm sorry for your loss.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Monday, 24 August 2009 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

mods delete thread. it's just too painful to read what others are able to enjoy without me.

andrew m., Monday, 24 August 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

I was just sitting here thinking "I wonder where I can find programming about manly collectibles," too.

nate dogg is a feeling (HI DERE), Monday, 24 August 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

I hope that doesn't happen here in Houston. 'This" is really the only HD bonus channel around here that's worth a damn.

haw i saw a little bit of this a couple of months ago, it was TERRIBLE

they've been showing "electra glide in blue" a lot recently

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 24 August 2009 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

We're planning on getting a new digital TV in November or December, and seriously This is one of the main reasons I am excited about it.

i love the scene where one of the motorcycle cops is enjoying lunch on the side of the road somewhere and robert blake comes sneaking up to him and puts the gun to his head. cops are such jokers! all in good fun. also, was amazed at how short robert blake is.

Wow, Hal Ashby's THE LANDLORD is on @ 10 tonight.

Chris L, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

four months pass...

i was trying to watch the story of adele h on this channel and it is ridiculous how they run a promo text line that completely obscures the subtitles for like a minute

also huh i saw 'the landlord' recently -- lol that the neighborhood is PARK SLOPE. also it is great that ashby puts his own credit (his 1st as a director) right over a graffiti'd wall that sez 'FUCK'
