Anyone else noticing its world domination? Anyone else caring? Throw in over-use of 'so' & 'don't even go there' and... well... *cold shower*.

Just me, then.

david h(owie), Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but HEIN?

Graham, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's called language, and yes, it does tend to dominate the world. You try going without it.

i don't understand this question either

michael, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you talking about verbing nouns?

Sam, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate that. especially when people use 'critique' as a verb. they mis-use nouns = they are monkeys etc

michael, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To quote Calvin in one of my favourite Calvin & Hobbes strips: "Verbing weirds language" = classic. If it wasn't classic already, I have just classicked it.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

michael, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's called the phrase "the whole [xXx} thing". This is whith whath I whas taking issue. E.g., "the whole anti-canonical thing is a bit of a red herring" ;). It's a pet peev - I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed its ubiquity.

david h(owie), Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha, Dan Perry roXor.

david h(owie), Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate you Dan.

michael, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

um...stuff....

ducklingmonster, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, I think the whole picking-on-colloquial-peeves thing is sort of played out.

the whole "guy posting to board" thing, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

did anyone point out the hilarity of everyone presuming david was using the actual structure he's moaning about and thinking he meant verb follwed by noun followed by preposition.

Oh the humanity. And QED about the ubiquity of it I guess.

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you for just now explaining this thread Ronan.

This (and by "this" I mean this thread)had boggled me.

Taking sides: hegemonic grammatical constructions vs. unclear antecedents?

By the way, david h., I agree with you.
