What Year Would You Like To Go Back To And Live In If You Had The Choice?

A fairly self-explanatory question, I think.

I'm feeling melancholy (it's ten months now and it hasn't as yet got any easier) so for me it would be a toss-up between 1969 and 1979; childhood and adolescence; everything to look forward to; possibilities still existing.

Maybe go and live in 1979 for a few months and then come back into the present - refreshed?

Or, if I get out of the wrong side of the bed in the morning, just go and stay there for good.

Are we talking anywhere in history or in our own lifetime?

Anywhere in history: I'll take whichever actual year Christ died. I'll spend my time in Alexandria (having learned Greek and Latin beforehand) and just go nuts in the library, and take a side visit over to Jerusalem just to see what actually happened.

In my own lifetime: I'll take 1979 as well, plus an unlimited expense account. "Why is that guy at EVERY Joy Division show?"

2003 in my own life
1924-1933 Berlin- Hollendar and Wiel and pretty boys.

they all have some merit, and most have some not so good parts

1992. i didn't know that the great raves and parties that were around were not endless, and that the rave scene was headed for the mire, because i had only just heard this music and had only just started to go out to things

1993. because i went out a lot more, and to a much wider variety of things

mid99-mid2000. my year at finchley, still makes me sad to have lost what i had there.

Weimar Berlin (with anthony).

There are three years I'd like to go back to: 1988, for the early acid house clubs and parties. I was only 9 then.

1995, as it was a glorious summer and it was probably the year I was happiest I've ever been.

And 1999: So I could be with a certain girl I loved very much but lost touch with due to shyness on my part.

(It was nice meeting you, Marcello.)
I have never felt this way.

1978 when Sid Vicious and Nancy were still alive I keep having this recurring dream that I am sent back in time to the summer of 1978 to warn Sid and Nancy of their deaths each time I dream this Sid listens to me but Nancy won't! and in this dream I must convince both of them or I will be sent back to the present time and they will both still die.

Tis a toss-up between 1996 (as there was a particular line-up at Glastonbury I'd have loved seeing) and 1998 (twas a fairly interesting year).

I don't understand how people can give such unequivocal answers to questions like this, without first clarifying the details. Am I to be aware that I am time travelling? If so, would I forget the winners of the Grand National and stuff? If not, what's the difference between just asking 'what year of your life was best?'

Anyway, assuming the former, and the option to correct mistakes (do I get to carry on into the next year with the new version of history set?) I suppose I'd go back as far as I could without the frustrations of being a 29 year old trapped in a child's body kicking in. 1990?

Oh hang on, some of you are taking it to mean 'just time travel in your current body' (unless Lady Space Pilot wants to be a 9 year old raver). Well in that case you've got the problem of meeting your own younger self and that would be too freaky.

[maybe I think about these things too much]

You should be writing for Star Trek, N.

Andrew L, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

geeta, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like now. I don't go in for this kind of thing.

Ronan, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're like some ageing modernist's wet dream.

N., Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And then I said "yeah? SO WHERE DO I FIND A PRETTY AGING MODERNIST????????" (roars of laughter)
