tv stole my memories...

an excerpt from a hometown friend's e-mail:

Last night, I flipped channels into this MSNBC special on homeless punk kids in Portland. I had this wierd vibe that someone from Tulsa might be shown, so I kept watching it. Well, they ended the program with a clip of Johnny and Ducky (Spencer) a.k.a. Ass-Holier than Thou playing the blues. It was messed up. Suddenly, a major news organization had hijacked my memories.

those boys have played key roles in my memories of being a teenager. they are legends in my hometown punk scene. i went to their parties. their shows. they threw me around in thrash pits and talked me into buying them beer. they gave me nicknames and protected me from harm.

i feel simultaneously violated, proud, amused, and baffled. mostly baffled.

is it reasonable to expect the people famous in my personal life to stay out of media radar? and why does the media appropriation of a teenage subculture only really start to bother me when it's my own?

Given that almost everyone picked up by the media for tiny or huge exposure has played a starring role in the personal lives of some people, obviously not. This is even more true if the role involves entertainment or the arts.

We hate it when our friends become successful.

well, i'm not sure being featured in a news special about homeless young junkies equals success.

For what it's worth, that documentary is maybe two years or so. God only knows where Johnny and Ducky are now...

I had mildly similar incidents when a) I learned on Oprah that a high school teacher who once gave me subtle pursed air-kisses was convicted of child molestation and killed himself in prison b) the Rhodes Scholar of my college appeared, mere months after graduation, royally tounging W.F. Buckley's ass on Firing Line c) there was a moment on the Minneapolis-based MST3K where Joel Hodgson recited -- in proper sequence -- the stops MY 5:36 TRAIN on the Long Island Rail Road, and d) the Twin Towers were attacked, 'cause I worked there.

Sometimes I wish that TV would keep to its own world, and me to mine, and never the twain shall meet. TV Go Home, indeed.
