funky winkerbean

cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

"windswept gothic italianate" is usually how i describe my style.

scott seward, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

"funky L.L. Bean"

scott seward, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, boho chic, especially with some sort of reference to Kate Moss or Sienna Miller, is really fucking annoying.

ailsa, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

"urban gothic gent"

ledge, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

more truthfully, "smart casual" (yuk), recently edging towards "preppy"

ledge, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

i prefer 'fun and flirty' to any of these.

gonna be a long hot summer for the MS Word paperclip (the table is the table), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

Several people have lately compared my look to that of a stewardess in uniform, that gets my vote.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

haha table i knew I forgot a "fun" option

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta be "hip and edgy." Nothing could be less hip than describing yourself as hip.

(I'm white, btw.) (kenan), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

i was thinking of doing this on I Love Style but ILE is the go-to place for judgemental & condescending opinions so

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

'Hip and edgy' is, what, a Dirty Projectors t-shirt and no pants?

The world will open to you like a magnificent vagina. (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

judgmental even!

well I'm married to a limping, crescent-shaped abortion (sarahel), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

"funky and eclectic" dredged up some angry lizard brain reaction just from reading it, so that.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

first thing that pops into my head is one of those goddamn rave hats they used to sell in mall kiosks

oh look im a jester, im a gnome, im the cat in the hat no dude you are an asshole

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta be "hip and edgy." Nothing could be less hip than describing yourself as hip.

yup, and I always find there to be something weird and aggressive about trying to think of anything you do as "edgy," like you're fighting a brave battle and don't care what the squares think. I don't know what "cool & casual" means beyond "I dunno, I just dress comfortable," which seems mellow and a-okay by me, and I almost kinda like it when people say they are "funky & eclectic," because you're like, cool, you think big jewelry and loud prints are fun, and if you are excited about being funky and eclectic then I'm excited, too, go for it. I guess I could complain a bit about the "timeless" part of "classic & timeless," but whatev.

nabisco, Monday, 20 July 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

'Hip and edgy' is, what, a Dirty Projectors t-shirt and no pants

I think I've found a new uniform, and I don't even know that band's music.

I live in a climate where pantslessness really makes the most sense.

kind-hearted, sensitive keytar player (Abbott), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Acrtually in my dreams I am usually wearing a coral-colored sweatshirt long enough to cover my underwear, a bow tie, & a pair of converse hi-tops.

kind-hearted, sensitive keytar player (Abbott), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

My style is "big fat dweeb" which makes up for in accuracy what it lacks in appeal.

How To Be Fun and Flirty:

Be exciting. Don't be dull! Be energetic, outgoing, and happy! Talk to people you've never met, get in touch with old friends. Be random and spontaneous. Strike up a conversation with your crush. You should rarely ever have a dull moment in your life. You should really shine at parties. Make a scene if you're at a party and then, we get to the next step.
Be entertaining. You should be able to put on a show with your personality. Be bright and funny. Show your talents off to the world! Live your life like a rock star! Smile all the time as if the world was smiling with you.
Be funny. This helps with being exciting and entertaining. Laugh a lot, tell jokes, and smile!
When you are flirting, smile, wink, and be sweet! Use good, and not cheesy pick up lines. Be original, or you'll look like a fool. Flirt a lot, and be fun!
Be yourself! This is the most important! Be yourself when flirting, as well as when you're being fun. Nobody likes a person who is just a clone; especially when they only do it to impress someone.
Look bold. Wear cute make up and wear cute and bright clothes! This will make you stand out. Use contrasting colors like white and black, you'll really pop, then.
Ta da! Now you are bold, and flirty!

i remember some girl i knew in undergrad whose facebook said something like "funky vintage with a splash of surf" which is even more lol because she was from buffalo :(

blobfish russian (harbl), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

Bored-at-work, cryptic.

Eazy, Monday, 20 July 2009 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

xp harbl: did she wear seaweed necklaces?

well I'm married to a limping, crescent-shaped abortion (sarahel), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

i can't even remember much about her but i think she liked hollister

blobfish russian (harbl), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

"Edgy" is a weird word altogether, even when it's applied to things other than oneself. I try not to use it, I figure there have to be more descriptive choices...but everyone knows what you mean when you say it, so in that sense it's sort of useful. Still...yuck.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

I think it could be awesome to be into "surf" if you're from Buffalo. Defying the odds, knowing your chances are slim.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

yeah maybe she liked surfing on lake erie in one of those heavy-duty wetsuits to protect from the cold and pollution ˘\(o_º)/˘

blobfish russian (harbl), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

i can't even remember much about her but i think she liked hollister

I remember when I first heard of Hollister - the clothing brand - and I had a serious wtf moment, because Hollister is a small hick town adjacent to the one where I grew up, about 20-30 miles from the ocean. It's claim to fame is being the historical inspiration for the movie, The Wild One with Marlon Brando.

well I'm married to a limping, crescent-shaped abortion (sarahel), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

Not trying to be sarccy for a change, but um...surf is also a style, you know. Of music, of clothes, of a few different things. I feel silly telling anyone on ILX that, but you do seem to be taking this person very literally.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i know, i wasn't taking her literally irl. just having a lol at buffalo's expense.

blobfish russian (harbl), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

also that "surf" is still a bad way to describe your personal style

blobfish russian (harbl), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

"funky and eclectic" dredged up some angry lizard brain reaction just from reading it, so that.

Right there with you, jj. It was a fight between that reaction and the one hip and edgy brought about, but f&e won the race to the bottom.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dude, yessssss! (B.L.A.M.), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

yup, this. although i like that kinda early '90s a different world afrocentric funky eclecticism, so if you dress like that and describe your style that way, you're forgiven.

flash! aaaaaah (get bent), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 03:24 (fifteen years ago)

I get biz-ay, consistently and thoroughly. I am a totally outrageous paradigm.

Are we voting on which of the options best describes our style or which one is more irritating?

touch my bum / this is life (daavid), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

I think I like one of the words on each option and dislike the other.
Like: cool, eclectic, hip, classic
Dislike: casual, funky, edgy, timeless.

hip&edgy is so so so wrong, as a thing to call yourself but wahey is it effective to use as condescendant.

take a sad song and make it HARDCORE (suzy), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 13:24 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not really sure which is the worst but for the awesome descriptions of personal style can I just take a moment to remind everyone about www.hel-looks.com? Take Kari, for instance:

http://www.hel-looks.com/photos/20090122_01.jpg

At the moment I have been heavily influenced by the people around me. Dagmar Robertson, Chris Bolton and Harri Kangas all have a great style and I always get inspired by them. Furthermore, Set Adrift On A Memory Bliss by PM Dawn has been a great source of inspiration recently."

Joona, 17:"Homeless people with their ragged and oversize clothes inspire my style. On the other hand I like posh dandy style, too."
