"something wonderful"? No somthing lousey. 2001: A Space Odyssey was so good and I just watched 2010. It sucked aggresively. WHat gives?

I read somewhere 2010 was intended to "explain" 2001. Since 2001 is my second favorite movie, I've avoided 2010.

The answer to this dilemna is tres obvious - everything changed after september 11th

I think if you want to explain 2001 read the book. Clarke writes pretty straightforwardly. Anyways, 2010 was directed by some dork, not kubrick...I can't believe he allowed it. It slike if SOmeones painted Geurnica 2 and Picasso let Bob Ross do it.

clarke wanted the end to be explained and kubrick didnt. it says this in the preface of 2010 that he basically wrote the book while the film is in production. hense the common line "i didnt get the movie until i read the book"

I just read 2061 - not bad but a little , er, well I expect mysticism after seeing 2001 the movie. But from what I get now that I am reading the preface of 3001, the monoliths are the tools of an ethereal race of aliens who like to stimulate the growth of intelligence.

if you want to know what 'happened' in 2001, you DON'T DESERVE TO WATCH IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!4 *coff*

petra jane, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the first time i watched it what happened is i went to sleep: every other time i have not been so lucky

the ICK theory = there are no good film directors whose names end in those letters in that order

The time I saw 2001 I fell asleep during the middle HAL segment. I woke up during the final section. I was completely baffled and a little disturbed. It's been one of my favorite films ever since.

ryan, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And, oddly enough, Malick and Kubrick are two of my favorite directors.

ryan, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, I've never seen 2010. I'm kinda curious, seeing how badly it's been panned and all.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not actually that bad, it's just very very literal and thus seems weird and jarring after the slow abstractness of 2001.

Justyn Dillingham, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

exactly Justyn. plus, much time is spent on annoying characters who serve only to infuriate the viewer with the pointless scenes spent showing their emotions.

I worship and adore the genius of 2001, but you know I like 2010. They're not the same sort of film, so don't even think of comparing them. The symbolism in 2010 is incredibly heavy handed, but the actual "we must cooperate" problem is a wonderful conceit and the final "event" (the something that is wonderful) IS wonderful. So, though the 2010 is technically a sequel, and the stories do work together, the two films as FILMS couldn't be further apart

I still say 2010 should have been a musical.

Pete, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i can see that.

I still say 2010 should have been a musical

Starring Troy Mclure, reprising his role from Stop The Planet Of The Apes, I Want To Get Off!

I wonder what would happen if David Lynch made 2061
