Bootlegging: Paintings and other pieces of art

So, bootlegging music seems to be in vogue. Do you think the principles of mixing different styles could be applied to the visual arts? Has this been done? What would crossing Cezanne with Pollock look like? What artists would you mix?

(obv. I mean taking the works of two artists and blending them together as opposed to my vague mixing different styles above)

(that really ought to be in a gallery...6ft by 8ft it would look magnificent)

What are the legal ramifications of art bootlegging?

It'd look like this:

And it'd be rubbish.

haha that was my masterpiece! (what should my badass bootlegger name be)

it seems to me like the time element is key with the musical bootlegs - we wait in anticipation over what will happen next - that's half the fun. how are they going to end the bootleg mix? what's the intro gonna sound like? how are they going to mix together the chorus? etc. a painting does not move with respect to time (at least not in the sense i am suggesting)

i have a feeling that bootlegging could be really cool with a time-based medium like video (say as an example we replace all instances of tom cruise in 'vanilla sky' with that kid who plays harry potter and all instances of penelope cruz with gary coleman)

geeta, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but but but Dom, that looks quite good.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And even earlier...Marcel Duchamp, by taking that urinal and placing it in a gallery space effectively melded the two contexts.

(Actually, my problem with Duchamp and the urinal is that the exhibition of the urinal as Duchamp's is unfair to the industrial designer who originally created it. Is his [or her] name recorded anywhere?)

j.lu, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha his name was r mutt surely

discuss the video thing dammit! my harry potter idea is pure gold!

geeta, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it would take lots of work, geeta. but i was just watching the making of waking life stuff and that guys animation software or something like it could probably freak yr video idea.

Ron, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s, i just want you to know that yr bootleg pic is *exactly* (or very very close) to what came into my head when i read jel's question (then again it's probably what came into most ilxers heads)

mitch lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

queenoftheharpies, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, now i remember seeing that image before. when i read jel's q i thought of putting "oh no! fite! OH NO!" over either the big cat or the malevich black square, but now i recall that the former has been done.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

geeta the video thing has been explored in such well known video pieces as 'that one where the guy who took bits from top gun and made it totally convincingly homoerotic' Foul Kilmer was rubbing plane parts like a true friend of dorothy. I like yr idea props too you.
