No need to make a list again after you've made this list once :
First buy a bunch of "basics" : a big bag of rice, a big bag of
lentils, a big bag of couscous, a big bag of orzo, and about four big
boxes of your favorite shapes of pasta (Delverde is my favorite brand,
but there's many others), a loaf of hearty bread (like rye or
pumpernickel), a loaf of wimpy bread (sour dough, potato, etc), a bag
of muffins, and a big box of granola/muselix/trail mix/peanuts.
Next you'll want to get smaller quantities of the basics that you'll
need to use up a little faster : butter, milk or cream, cheese (choose
a kind that can be cooked as well as eaten plain), olive oil, red wine
vinegar, peanut oil, yogurt (plain please, so that you can flavor it
differently each time you eat it), and a few cans of whole tomatos in
sauce, tomato paste and broth (chicken or veggie).
Finally, wander down the spice section and snag some dill weed, some
fresh basil or fresh parsley, oregano, cinnamon, nutmeg, saffron and
some thyme. (I'd have you to grab some whole peppercorns too, but
you've already got a working pepper grinder at home, right?)
After this, all you've got to do to make great meals is follow your
whim (fruit and veggie wise) ... once a week or so, just pop into the
local market and scope out the produce section. Whatever looks fresh
and colorful and smells good is what you'll want to bag up and take
home (produce clerk excluded). If a fruit or veggie makes you hungry
just by looking at it, then that's your cue to purchase lots of it.
Avoid those that haunt your from your childhood ("no cake for you
until after you've finished your [insert evil veggie name here] !")
So much for the shopping, now on to the cooking :
---------
Follow this simple mathematical formula --
One or more basics + one or more perishables + two or more fresh
fruits/veggies + one or more spice/herbs = MEAL
For instance :
pita bread + olive oil (or yogurt) + feta cheese + onions + tomatoes +
cucumbers + oregano + thyme = an excellent Greek style sandwich or
salad (depending on the quantities you use).
trail mix + yogurt + strawberries + raspberries + blueberries +
cinnamon = breakfast in the Swiss style. (Very healthy!)
hearty bread + butter + cream + potatoes + potatoes + potatoes + thyme
+ parsley = Lunch in the Swiss style. "Rosti" (Very unhealthy!)
rice + olive oil + red wine vinegar + whole tomatoes in sauce + onions
+ tomatoes + olives + garlic + lemons + thyme + parsley + pepper +
saffron = paella (if you're a carnivore, then add six different kinds
of meat and fish).
lentils + whole tomatoes in sauce + veggie or chicken broth + vinegar
+ carrots + celery + onions + parsley + pepper + thyme = lentil soup
And so on.
Enjoy! :)
