You can go up to the top deck again nowadays. It was closed for something close to 30 years, not because of Whitman, but because it was apparently too tempting to jump to your death off of. The cool thing to do is hang around the tour guide after the official tour is over, and he or she will show you bullet holes where the cops shot back, and point out places you can see from up there where Whitman made these un-fucking-believable kills. He was shooting people a mile away.

(I'm white, btw.) (kenan), Friday, 24 July 2009 07:47 (sixteen years ago)

Ok not a mile. But, like, 28th and Guadalupe.

Ok, you guys, I think I have to edit this wikipedia paragraph.

Although the above issues were of no degree to cause his actions on August 1, 1966, his frustrations were complicated by a dysfunctional family, abuse of amphetamines, health issues, including a glioblastoma, a highly cancerous brain tumor, that was discovered during autopsy. He was also affected by negative incidents and a court martial as a United States Marine, a student at the University of Texas, ambitious personal expectations and psychotic features he expressed in his type written note left at 906 Jewell Street, Austin, Texas, dated both July 31, 1966 and later by hand "3 A.M., both dead August 1, 1966". After his death, a brain tumor was discovered that experts claim conceiveably may have played a role in causing his actions.

And did we mention he had a brain tumor?

Ok how's this instead.

Charles Joseph Whitman (June 24, 1941 – August 1, 1966), shot and killed 15 people and wounded 31 others in Austin, Texas on August 1, 1966. The majority of his victims were killed or wounded at random, from the 307-foot administrative building and bell tower of University of Texas, where Whitman was a student. Whitman killed his wife and mother inside their homes several hours before entering the campus's main building, killing three inside, and barricading himself on the 28th floor observation deck for 96 minutes. From this vantage, Whitman, a former Marine trained in marksmanship, shot and killed ten others. The incident ended when he was gunned down by city police officers Houston McCoy[1] and Ramiro Martinez.

Whitman was known as a friendly, attractive young man, though he was deeply troubled by his dysfunctional family life, a court martial from the United States Marines, trouble as a student at the University, his abuse of amphetamines, and constant headaches which were discovered at his autopsy to have been caused by a highly cancerous brain tumor. He clearly expressed his psychotic and suicidal intentions in two suicide notes left at the murder scenes of his mother and wife, the latter of which was signed, "Both dead, August 1, 1966."

(Not posted yet, thought I'd ask around first before I edited something this severely.)

(I'm white, btw.) (kenan), Friday, 24 July 2009 09:16 (sixteen years ago)

Lose the comma after that first set of parentheses.

(I'm white, btw.) (kenan), Friday, 24 July 2009 09:16 (sixteen years ago)

Also maybe he just expressed his psychotic intentions, instead of "clearly" expressing them.

actually a decent question y'all fucked up with ironic bullshit answer (sarahel), Friday, 24 July 2009 09:38 (sixteen years ago)

It's better. News-ier.

It's difficult with something like this, because it's such a good story. His family was nuts, he had brain cancer, he left juicy notes all over the place, he SAWED THE BARREL OFF A SHOTGUN THAT HE BOUGHT THAT MORNING WHILE MAKING CASUAL CONVERSATION WITH A POSTMAN... man. What do you leave out?

(I'm white, btw.) (kenan), Friday, 24 July 2009 09:48 (sixteen years ago)

I guess the bigger question is, is this wiki entry a news story or a feature? I fear leaving it too dry before we jump right into "he was born in..."

(I'm white, btw.) (kenan), Friday, 24 July 2009 09:50 (sixteen years ago)

You could start with something like, "infamous mass-murderer Charles Whitman"

actually a decent question y'all fucked up with ironic bullshit answer (sarahel), Friday, 24 July 2009 09:59 (sixteen years ago)

The author of what's up there now apparently was intrigued by the idea of his family being dysfunctional, so he went on about it. Me, I'm tempted to write about how much fucking ammunition he sashayed into two different stored and bought with hot checks. Or maybe how his doctors at the UT health center couldn't diagnose his issue, shrugged and gave him Dexedrine. I kind of want to touch on it all, but only real quick-like. "Do you want to know more?" etc

(I'm white, btw.) (kenan), Friday, 24 July 2009 10:02 (sixteen years ago)

I guess if I was planning on being dead by afternoon, I'd write a hot check or two, too.

Oh, I see. When I referred to the "he was born in..." part, I meant the second subhead. The parenthetical (here to when) dates right up front are standard, I assume.

Back to the Whitman page very briefly, I promise: My revision was vetoed with the comment "v good faith edit, see no reasons for these changes and none given. This version gives more info to the reader for understanding." Followed immediately by nine edits by me, documenting my reasons for changes in excruciating detail that was also as polite as I could manage.

actually a decent question y'all fucked up with ironic bullshit answer (sarahel), Friday, 24 July 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

No. They really don't understand that at all. I suppose that if they understood that, their writing would be better.

To be fair, I came in with a hard on, and they were like, "Who the fuck are you?"

never name anything coolpix (kenan), Friday, 24 July 2009 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

In my experience, no. A year or 2 ago, I substantially rewrote an existing article which read in places like it had been translated into English by babelfish. Over the months that followed, the orig author reverted it, in a piecemeal manner, to what it had been before I started. Thus ended my good-faith adventures in wikiland.

They were actually extraordinarily polite, considering. Any other place on the internet, including this one, you'd be banned in a heartbeat for walking in knowing that you are smarter than everyone without even properly introducing yourself. Or you'd at least be severely fucked with.

It's cool... I learned the proper format for citing references while I was busy being smarter than everyone.
