Are there any gay icons who are also liked by heterosexuals?

alternate title: are there any gay icons who aren't rubbish?

I mean, Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Gil Gerrard - it's not exactly a list of quality.

DV, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Madonna.

Nick Southall, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Servalan

Alan T, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Madonna's rubbish

Dusty Springfield wasn't, however

michael, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have said previously that Garland has quality.

Oscar Wilde.

KYLIE!!

katie, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Audrey Hepburn is pretty well liked universally. James Dean is sort of a gay icon. Barbara Stanwyck (oh that is a total sic ain't it) was pretty popular. Doris Day was popular with all. Monty Clift, etc. Are these folks really gay icons? I guess. Are they NOT rubbish? Well they all had non-rubbish moments (hell even Rock Hudson had non-rubbish moments--see the fantastic post-Manchurian Candidate John Frankenheimer flick Seconds. It's really really good.)

Alex in SF, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dusty is a fucking good shout.

Nick Southall, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where do the Village People fit in? Five sixth's straight and pretending to be as Gay as they come - loved my everyone from 10 year olds to Grannies. But I'm not sure if they actually are gay icons. Do gay guy's play YMCA and Go West ironically, aware that they are re- contextualising a straight re-contextualisation of gay culture 30 year's ago? Or do they just like the perky tunes and traffic cop pecs? In hollywood comedies the ubiquitous gay club scene is always YMCA, e.g. Wayne's World or Police Academy, but then that’s hollywood and I never hear it pounding out of the George when I pass it on the way home a Sunday night.

Slappy: Skippy, what's the name of that group playing on stage?
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The name of the group.
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The group on stage.
Skippy: Who!
Slappy: The group playing on stage.
Skippy: Who!!!
Slappy: You're starting to sound like an owl, Skippy.
Skippy: Who is on stage!
Slappy: That's what I'm asking you: Who is on stage?
Skippy: That's what I said.
Slappy: You said who?
Skippy: I sure did.
Slappy: So tell me their name.
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The name of the group.
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The group on stage!
Skippy: Who!
Slappy: The name of the band on stage!
Skippy: Who!!!
Slappy: You're doing that owl thing again, Skippy.
Skippy: I am not, Aunt Slappy! I'm telling you: Who's on stage.
Slappy: So tell me.
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The name of the group.
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The group on stage.
Skippy: Who!
Slappy: That's what _I'M_ asking _YOU_!
Skippy: And I'm telling you the answer!
Slappy: Wait... Skippy, let's start over. Is there a band on stage?
Skippy: Yes.
Slappy: Does that band have a name?
Skippy: Yes.
Slappy: Do you know the name of that band?
Skippy: Yes.
Slappy: Then tell me the name of the band on stage.
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The name of the band.
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The band on stage!
Skippy: Who!
Slappy: The band playing on stage!!!
Skippy: Who!!!
Slappy: That's what _I_ want to know!!!
Skippy: I'm telling you!
Slappy: Who is on stage?
Skippy: Yes.
Slappy: Who is?
Skippy: Yes.
Slappy: Oh, so the name of the band is Yes.
Skippy: No, Aunt Slappy. Yes is not even at this concert.
Slappy: Then who is on stage?
Skippy: Yes.
Slappy: Who is?
Skippy: Yes.
Slappy: That's what I just said: Yes is on stage.
Skippy: No, Yes is not here. Who is on stage.
Slappy: What are you asking _ME_ for?
Skippy: I'm not!
Slappy: Wait... Let's try this again. Do you see the band on stage?
Skippy: No, I don't see The Band! That's a different group entirely.
Slappy: On stage, Skippy. Look! See the band?
Skippy: No, I don't.
Slappy: Get rid of those John Lennon glasses and look! There! There's
             the band!
Skippy: No, that's not The Band! The Band is performing later on.
            Who's on stage!
Slappy: You tell me.
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The name of the group on stage.
Skippy: Who.
Slappy: The name of the group!
Skippy: Who!
Slappy: The group on stage!
Skippy: Who!!!
Slappy: The band!!!
Skippy: No, The Band's performing later! Right now, we're listening to Who!
Slappy: That's what _I_ want to know!!!

Dom Passantino, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jodie Foster?

Archel, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dearie me. You people clearly have no idea what a gay icon is. It's almost impossible to be a man and become a gay icon. Being gay does not help. Gay icons are, boringly, women who have suffered lots and sing about it, or something like that. Being a gay men's pin-up is not the same thing. Campness helps, but women can rarely do the effeminate campness to any effect, so it's left to the absurdly exaggerated displays of emotion, thus Garland, Streisand. This is obviously a simplification, but it at least resembles the truth.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dispute that martin- i am a gay ikon loved by all.

anthony, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the (erroneous) idea that Oscar Wilde is a gay icon. Every Thursday at G.A.Y. two thousand lithe 21 year olds in skintight black tops and beaded neckchains drinking WKD and listening to a rendition of "The Ballad of Reading Gaol"

Dom Passantino, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone please explain how Margaret Thatcher became a gay icon?

stevo, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

TIM CURRY ROXXOR, EVEN IN MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND (singing with little boy while dressed in pirate costumes is as NAMBLA as they come).

Dan I., Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

By which I do not mean to say that nambla roxxor, nonononono. Just Tim Curry.

Dan I., Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Garbo?

j.lu, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what abt grebo?

mark s, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A (gay) friend of mine once went to a Gay greebo club. He said it was the most mind numbingly depressing experience of his entire life. They kept playing Tool.

Maynard James Keenan: gay icon?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, well he does sing about sex in prison. But no, not a gay icon.

Sean, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Janis Joplin, Nico, Bjork, Courtney Love, Polly Harvey.

I like all the icons mentioned in this thread, except Tori Amos. I'm a likin' kinda guy. Not heterosexual, though.

Arthur, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh. I don't like Margaret Thatcher. But I'm not surprised she's a gay icon, so's Nancy Reagan. I mean, just look at them.

Arthur, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it me or nobody mentionned David Bowie?

The Hegemon, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or Morrissey

The Hegemon, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Buffy, except I don't know how many gay guys like her. Oh, and Willow. And Faith. Buffy the whole show as an icon. It seems like every second lesbian has a cat called Willow. Nice name for a cat.

toraneko, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maggy is not an icon - she's an example of how everything can go wrong.

marc almond is a dman fine prison bitch, but I don't know how many straight ppl like him. Divine, I guess.

Queen There Will Be No Talk of Eating People in this House G, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gay icons are, boringly, women who have suffered lots and sing about it, or something like that.

this is my understanding of what primarily constitutes gay icons.

I find women who have suffered a lot and sing about it kind of annoying. Hence my question.

DV, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr Who = Gay Icon, tardis not so much - in need of much redeccoration.

Queen There Will Be No Talk of Eating People in this House G, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

John from the Tomorrow People. but do any heterosexuals like him too? seems unlikely as he was a twunt "Oh for heaven's sake, Mike! What were you thinking, hmmm? No that's exactly the problem, you weren't thinking" sort of thing.

I read this question as "Are there any iconic homosexuals who are avidly loved by straight people?" To which I answer: Liberace and Barry Manilow.

is Barry Manilow gay?

no, by the question I meant people who are iconic to gays. People - like say Kylie Minogue - who are often popular enough with hets but are liked by gays to such an extent that if someone likes them it's reasonable enough to assume they bat for the other team.

Walt Whitman and Alan Ginsberg? Not exactly gay icons in the sense that's meant here though.

Are there any gay icons who AREN'T also liked by heterosexuals? Judy Garland & Barbra Streisand have sold millions & millions of records, the majority of them to straight people, surely.

Cher. may I repeat? Cher.
She rules.
beloved by gay and straight fans all over the world. An icon to the gay community because of her talent for reinvention (unlike that little whore Madonna), her ability to have countless farewell tours, and....I'm just gasping now.
her outfits? her torrid love affairs? her eulogy for Sonny? Cher IS the icon.
