Taking Sides: Beer vs Wine

Which do you prefer? Examples please!

I'm drunk on wine for the first time in a while (I normally drink beer) and it's quite swirly and exhilarating in a way that beer hasn't been in awhile.

geeta, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh beer, I dunno bout u geeta, but there comes a time when u come back home from the pub and you still would be eager for more drink...and then u go to a 24 hour and get that cheap vinegar-y shit and then end up with boils and shit on yr neck...always happens to me...i hate wine...does that mean i'm a pleb?

Michael Bourke, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

unless they are served using hot water drinks should be cold. not room temperature, like most wine. ugh. BEER WINS.

Josh, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i love beer, but i should not drink it as it fucks with my digestive tract. what about the hard stuff?? i don't drink much anymore, but when i do i try to stick to liquor. strangely, my body seems to handle it the best. plus i prefer the anesthetic liquor drunk to the fuzzy beer drunk.

Ron, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At home, wine and wine only. Red, pref shiraz or a merlot. Out on the town, beer. Cheap, cheerful and consistent.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and then u go to a 24 hour and get that cheap vinegar-y shit and then end up with boils and shit on yr neck

Garbage in, garbage out for both wine and beer. For me the choice depends on a whole spectrum of factors, including the weather, the location, and what if anything I'm eating with it. However, assuming that all factors are equal, I'll generally prefer a beer.

j.lu, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beer is very fragrant. I like them both.

toraneko, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like guzzling cheap beer but I treat wine more like food; rhone styles (I prefer Californian rhones to the real thing actually), earthy cabernets, juicy California zinfandels, and various Tuscan styles are my general favorites, but there are good and bad examples of pretty much everything. I also really like lots of dessert wines and sherries. Josh, white wines, champagnes, and many dessert wines are generally drunk cold. I like bourbon more than anything, but it messes with my brain too much. If I had to give up either beer or wine forever I'd definitely give up beer.

Kris, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jesus this is a tricky one. i never ever drink wine in pubs/bars, which makes me inclined to say beer; but then i tend to drink wine rather than beer with meals/just sitting round at home. there are wines i've drunk that have made me swoon (well, kinda) (swoon in appreciation rather than drunkeness) in a way that beer hasn't, but then again the thought of a pint after a hard day at work... i'd better stop or i'll want some now, and it's not even 9am yet.

toby, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lager does all sorts of horrible things to me - dreadful hangovers, stomach upsets, skin breaking out in blotches etc so i try not to drink it too often. however a lovely lovely pint of Sam Smith's bitter goes down a treat if i'm out on the town and can't be arsed drinking rum. OR - shandy yaayayy!! when i'm at home wine is the usual drink of choice, though red or rose only. i like Hardy's Stamp wine mmmm yum yum. or PORT!

katie, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, Kris. Champagne I put in a separate category because of the bubbles I guess. White wine is disgusting.

Josh, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Living as I do in the land of beer (and chocolate) there's only one answer to this question. When I get back to UK tho' I'll prolly say wine.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They are both very good as long as they are very good, and bad wine is as awful as bad beer. I like wine more and more with the years, but I do not love beer any less. The real dud, of course, is the "Idiot Boy Drinks Several Beers After Drinking Several Glasses of Wine" hangover, which I have had exactly once -- but once was enough.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm, neither.

Beer and Wine Shandy!!!

Pete, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete a wine shandy is a SPRITZER as any fule kno!

katie, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beer definitely.

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can never decide. I have convinced myself wine is less fattening but is it? At any rate drinking wine = less time spent pissing. Though it gives me worse hangovers. But wine is better with food. Except curry.

It is all so difficult that I have given up and am now just drinking vodka & tequila instead.

Emma, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

as if all beer can be grouped together into one camp/army. pah. cider v scrumpy v lager v stout v bitter v ale v perry v wine more like. it's a mood thing. i cannot take sides. i will sit on the fence to annoy all the Sandys of the world. parp.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is clearly a continuum of bouze.

Emma, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No no Ktee - 50% beer / 50% wine. Num Num.

Pete, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

COR I sa FORTIFIED WINE hello sherry hello port hello falling over in gutter after you have drunken nine billion bottles of nummy port and scoffed yr face on stinky ripe cheese.... when we went to SPAIN we went to PLACES which made SHERRY and MADIERA and COR they were nice (although I was not supposed to drink them I DID ANYWAY heehee!!)

Sarah, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha ptee accidentally reveals the recipe for his ELIXIR OF INVINCIBILITY!!

katie, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not sure how Pete's vile beverage would fit in with the whole 'beer before wine makes you feel fine, wine before beer makes you feel queer (not gay queer but strange queer as I have pointed out before)' thing. Does it depend what order the drink is prepared? Either way it sounds revolting and I challenge Pete to drink a pint of it.*

*Actually I don't because he probably would as well. Ew.

Emma, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sup it and see how invincible it makes you. (Hint - possibly not very).

Pete, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sup it and see how invincible it makes you. (Hint - possibly not very). This reminds me of a night a while back when we were itching for Snakebite and Black but could get no blackcurrant cordial. Solution was a simple substitution for le vin rouge. Hmmmm.

Pete, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wine is for drinking with meals. Getting drunk on wine is pointless. Beer is for drinking in an establishment, or whilst watching the game. Ummm, yeah.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Being on the wagon, I don't touch either at the moment, however: Gewurtztramminer. Yummy.

Gordon, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Carmenere.

Matt, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer beer, though I'm quite choosey what I drink finding most mass produced beers bland and characterless. Last week I visited the brewery of one of my very favourite beers, de koninck in Antwerp. Its still a small family owned operation. Nothing against wine, except the patronising way many connoisseurs regard my favourite tipple.

stevo, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Getting drunk on wine is pointless??? Porca puttana, Dom P, but wine- drunkery is fab! It makes me good drunk, happy drunk, and leaves me with hangovers I understand, and almost cherish.

Beer can also be great, but wine rocks if you have to choose between the two. A nice freezing semillon or verdicchio spritzer on a warm summer's evening, heaven. All other times, a heavy Spanish or Chilean red. Or an Amarone. Double heaven, with a spicy nose.

Mark C, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is now giving me the thirsties.

Emma, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely the intent. *hic*

Either works for me, but yes, situation and time are deeply important in terms of what to indulge with.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its because of all the damn wine in it. I go for beer, epsecially black beer

Chupa-Cabras, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

On a holiday in Norway I learned to drink beer which I loathed for years, and only drank on hot summer days. In Oslo it was the cheap and you could get it in the supermarket, instead of wine for which you had to go to special government stores...also in the few bars I frequented it was very not done to order wine...and I already had a bad for ordering TEA on my first day: YOU DRINK TEA WHEN YOU'RE ILL HERBAL TEA IS BORING etc. etc.

erik from holland, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beer in a pub, as an evening of talking loud dries me up (this was even more true when I smoked) and wine isn't much good for that or for quenching a thirst. Dinner at home, wine, as I can quench my thirst with orange juice and anyway I'm not shouting all night.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

beer, preferably Bitter at the pub, probably finished off with a whisky or two (no ice!!) whereas at home it's wine all the way, except when watching footy, when it's quite often lager. Why?? I have no idea, it's just the way these things work out.

so far today = bottle of guinness, a glass of chardonnay and yet to be opened a bottloe of Argentinian chenin blanc.

chris, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nowt like a fine bottle of white wine, to relax after a hard day.....or share with a few mates. Preferably medium- dry Chardonnay.

Nichole Graham, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it all depends on what mood i'm in. if i want to get happy, i go for beer. if i want to get drunk, i go for wine.

queenoftheharpies, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh good, a thread on which I can discuss my favorite after-effect of a good wine buzz: not only do you wake up drunk, but you also sweat a sweet wine smell, you exhale a sweet wine smell wine, you . . . (oh well, you get the idea). This multi-front wine-exuding may not be attractive to third parties but I had never thought about it -- until I typed this just now.

I like red wine, although I have no clue what to buy except for a few St.Emillion, Graves and Margaux that I know I like and are usually reasonable. I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of good California and other ones but I have had many bad red wines that turn my face red and give me sneezing fits.

felicity, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beer = breadjuice. wine = bloodjuice

mike hanle y, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Out and about in a bar or anywhere a BBQ is, beer. Hockey or other sports invovled, beer.
I do enjoy having a bottle of wine on the back porch with the sun shinning. Though I think I enjoy the porch more then the wine as I havent had one of those in a long time.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just finished eating a supper of spicy sausage and spaghetti with tomato sauce, and I dearly wish I had a bottle of red wine. As it was, I drank a Corona, which I suppose was better than a glass of water...

Sean, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yea,i think that being drunk on beer is better for watching tv vs drunk on wine.

Beer's earthiness suits my temperament better-- it seems more grounding than wine.

Plus I sometimes find Mediterranean, sunny personalities to be sort of off-putting. Same goes with drinks of that nature, I guess. So wine is not a great fit for me.

Maybe there's genetic component involved in the equation? I'm pretty sure I come from a long line of beery peoples.

I prefer the beer, mos defs. I have never encountered a wine that didn't have "notes" of either wood polish or deodorant.

good wine > good beer > cheap beer > cheap wine

deej, Thursday, 28 February 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

My roomie worked at a fancy restaurant, and one night some customers left half of the $90 bottle of wine they'd purchased on the table. He brought it home and shared it. It was a good 20 minutes of staring into space, sipping, and every once in a while saying, "So this is what a $95 bottle of wine tastes like. Huh." Or just "huh."

Abbott, Thursday, 28 February 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

right but isnt wine in your state made from potato skins

ogmor, Thursday, 28 February 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

beer usually. i wish i could drink red wine, but it gives me headaches. white wine can taste like shit if you buy the wrong type, and i don't know enough about wines not to do this. beer is more consistent.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

Ha that link actually neatly summarizes my feelings on both Bangs books too. "Bible when I was younger," later vists bored me, new book was a breath of fresh air. Maybe I'm thinking it was Martyn that he comisterated with?

Whatev, you're probably right. I'll crack the book open when I get home just to reread that piece again though, it's great.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

I likes the beer, mainly because I've educated myself about it a bit, and I don't know good wine from great wine. (I can pretty much tell good wine from bad.)

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

xp hate to turn an ile thread into a discussion on bangs but - i think i got into him to late to really love the first book (aside from the essay on van morrison) but that second book gives a much more interesting/broad look @ his skills as a writer, esp. the 'innocents in babylon' piece
