Actor Crowe gives to charity shop

Russell Crowe is in Berkshire to film Robin Hood with Ridley Scott
Hollywood star Russell Crowe visited a Berkshire charity shop where he made a £1,000 donation.

The Oscar-winning Gladiator actor, who is filming Robin Hood, walked into the Cancer Research UK shop in Sunningdale, near Ascot, where he joined a queue.

The actor, 45, then chatted to staff inside while on a break from shooting scenes in nearby Virginia Water.

Manager Julia Deane told the BBC: "He comes to the cafe next door because he's filming nearby."

She said: "He just came into the shop and the lady at the till was serving someone else.

"She didn't recognise him. He asked if we took donations and she told him that we do in the back of the shop.

"She gave him the book to fill in his name and he wrote Russell Crowe."

The £110m Ridley Scott remake of Robin Hood also stars Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian and is set to be released in 2010.

So, he goes into the Cancer Research shop, and instead of perusing the Max albums in the box, just goes "Here's £1000".

I mean, yeah it's not dressing up as an ostrich and running through halfords going "I NEED DISC PADS!!" but...

Mark G, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

Mark G, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think this is "strange behavior," really, to donate money to charity?

a muttering inbred (called) (not named) (Abbott), Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

Perhaps it is strange for Australians.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

MOAR HUMOR THAN A HUMAN(E) (jjjusten), Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, it's not to be discouraged, certainly, but..

Mark G, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

I see, it's strange to give money to cancer research and not 'The Foundation for Dyslexic Dalmatians.'

wtf is strange about this

max, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

skepticism abt ppls motives for giving to charity is one of those things that makes my eyes roll so far back in my head i go into a coma

max, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

Please donate to help Max out of his coma.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:34 (sixteen years ago)

When I worked in film locatiosn, I used to redeem lost earnings or 'make donations' to local businesses and people affected by our filming all the time and it can certainly additonally appeasing to send in signed photo or a star in person. The fact that this made the news makes me think it's orchestrated.

Russell Crowe will beat that coma out of you max dont worry

On the set of the Australian film Proof, Russell Crowe is said to have seduced a young ingenue in his trailer.

Though he later denied it, passersby who knew what Crowe was up to swear that, during the act, he was overheard shouting "Go, Russ, go!" at the top of his lungs.

"woah man, flügelhorn" (haitch), Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:36 (sixteen years ago)

Was he staring in a mirror the whole time?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 July 2009 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

Isn't he always, essentially?

Max: I wasn't even being sceptical. I dunno, ....

Mark G, Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, was it Russell or the ingenue who shouted that?

Tuomas, Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

See, after what Michael White said, now it makes more sense.

See, at first I didn't understand and was confused.

Mark G, Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:07 (sixteen years ago)

Nope.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, it's certainly not the first time I've heard of a celebrity performing a random act of kindness.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

haha Crowe is clearly a man ruled by his emotions, and I for one salute him for his particular emotions here possibly involving walking past a cancer charity show and being moved

i can only assume that this was followed immediately by "oh hey you're still here?"

MOAR HUMOR THAN A HUMAN(E) (jjjusten), Thursday, 30 July 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

The £110m Ridley Scott remake of Robin Hood also stars Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian and is set to be released in 2010.

£1000 isn't much to pay for free publicity.

DavidM, Thursday, 30 July 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

Will it cover one person's cancer bills?

a muttering inbred (called) (not named) (Abbott), Thursday, 30 July 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

Tom Cruise did something like this when he was filming War of the Worlds He went into an ice cream store in Virginia, saw a jar collecting money for some little girl who had been in an accident, and stuffed $5,000 cash into it.
