tbh i love pizza prob more than almost any other food but this past year i've really been getting into hot sandwiches made w/ really good bread

mark cl, Friday, 31 July 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man. See, the thing is, I eat sandwiches SO MUCH that right now pizza sounds more appealing. But part of the reason I eat sandwiches so much, apart from laziness (it's what I make at home when I'm too lazy to cook, and it's what I buy for lunch when I don't have anything to bring from home) is that they're so versatile, and a really well-made sandwich can be sublime.

jaymc, Friday, 31 July 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

Scorsese vs A SANDWICH

velko, Friday, 31 July 2009 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

yah as much as i love pizza, sandwiches are more versatile (as jaymc said) and basically include pizza via the calzone (as pancakes herman said)

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

is a hot dog a sandwich?

I call bias in the photo choices, that pizza looks like an abortion

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

this is tough, because there are a lot of sandwiches i strongly dislike. but a good sandwich is one of the best things around. tougher to make a really transcendent pizza imo.

xp no a hot dog is a hot dog.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

normally i would vote for sandwiches over pizza (even though pizza is pizza), but last night i had one of my favorite sandwiches in town (a banh mi-like pork sandwich) and got a really weird stomach ache for the rest of the night, so i'm voting pizza out of spite.

i'm going to make a pizza and top it with sandwiches

that would be an abomination against pizza according to american internet blowhards. a pizza sandwich otoh would offend no-one. sandwiches win, qed.

i specifically did a 'new haven pizza' GIS to get an image for this thread b/c no pizza is better

Modern, Pepe's and Sally's are consistently rated among the best pizzerias in the United States, giving this geographically-limited pizza style considerable culinary and historical importance.[2][3]

mark cl, Friday, 31 July 2009 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

As a vegetarian (and britisher), pizza only comes with very limited options, like, cheese or some veg or whatever. Sandwiches are right with thousands of different flavours, and usually have better bread when done properly. Sandwiches.

Come on guys, pizza is the best. Sandwiches are good, but they're either boring or over-complicated and rarely anywhere in between. (I do adore a good croque monsieur but a) that is beyond sandwich, and b) it's still not as good as pizza.)

this is controversial but i feel the same way about burgers.

this is the classic traditionalist ("does it fit the traditional idea of a sandwich") vs. structuralist ("is it structured as a sandwich (ie two pieces of bread encasing a filling)?") argument of sandwich classification btw

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

New Haven-style pizza is a style of Neapolitan pizza common in and around New Haven, Connecticut, locally known as "apizza".

do they know apizza means non-pizza

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 31 July 2009 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

if you fold a pizza slice in half does it *become* a sandwich??

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Friday, 31 July 2009 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

in re: fries on pizza as I have pointed out elsewhere this is a thing I have seen done as a matter of course, in the small English town of Stoke-on-Trent, where there is a solid block of cheap pizza shops right near the club we were playing in - in one, there was a pizza listed as the "London pizza." me to counterman: "what is the London pizza?" he: "it's got chips on it" me: [tries not to burst into huge ear-to-ear grin]

where in the stack on a sandwich do you put the avocado so it doesn't all spill out the sides?

don't try to church it up (nickalicious), Monday, 3 August 2009 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

smear it on the bread.

ian, Monday, 3 August 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

schmear if u will.

ian, Monday, 3 August 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

This is good advice. the porous nature of the bread will prevent spillage far better than meat, cheese or lettuce. This also works for tomatoes.

the monte cristo is like the greatest collective cry for help (B.L.A.M.), Monday, 3 August 2009 23:19 (fifteen years ago)

what i been doing at work is 'toasting' bread 1-sided on the flat top at work and melting cheese over the avocado into the soft side of the bread but i feel like there should be a way to cram it into a stack of veggies that it won't create a sandwich fault line.

don't try to church it up (nickalicious), Monday, 3 August 2009 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

like between two layers of perfectly shredded lettuce

don't try to church it up (nickalicious), Monday, 3 August 2009 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

In my extensive torta experience the avocado is almost always sliced thin and laid down the centerline of the sandwich. You're definitely not getting it in every bite, but it's not squeezing out the sides, either.

This is not counting the torta aguacate, in which the avocado is the main filling of the sandwich. That shit gets everywhere no matter what.
