Did Tim Burton actually start this stupid trend or was he just the leading indicator?
Also, if only the Whos hadn't been so MEAN to Jim Carrey when he was young.

I'm struggling to think of other examples but I could list books I hope Burton never gets near, starting with Fattypuffs and Thinifers.
Also let's hope there isn't a 20 minute exploration of the kid's Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Where the Wild Things Are.

Sadly this is EXACTLY what I fear.

Polyanna was obviously repressing some dark shit.

I don't know if I'd entirely mind a horror movie explaining whatever happened to Pippi Longstocking's parents

Oh wait, Wikipedia tells me her sea-captain dad was just marooned in the South Sea and named "fat white chief"

I've not watched the movies but I assume the kids in The Lion, the Witch and the Baby Jesus are blank posho cyphers like in the books?
― Calamari Merkin (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 1 August 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)
Where The Wild Things Are is obviously going to require some padding though, considering the book is only ten sentences long

My bras were at least 16 sentences long back then.

from the opposite angle, i always thought "willy wonka and the chocolate factory' significantly decreased the Buckets' character exposition from the far superior book 'charlie and the chocolate factory'. which is why i liked tim burton's better even if it had its problems
still surprised nobody has filmed 'charlie and the great glass elevator' yet.

Well half the book is completely out of date now, from what I remember.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 2 August 2009 15:11 (sixteen years ago)
It's also kinda rambling and plot-light iirc.
