I voted one 'cause it's the habitat that counts and it's probably been dozens of spiders since I moved here. She lives at the bottom of the back stairs on the far wall at one crook of a support beam and the joist of the staircase. Unimaginatively, she's known as Charlotte. Yes, I'm an asshole and occasionally blow smoke at her but it's house rules that she not be removed.

heh, sounds like my spider friend at the bottom of the staircase on my back deck. I occasionally blow smoke on him/her as well (why not). I haven't named her but she is the perfect size.. not too big and ugly. I got worried for a few days when she wasn't there but she came back. Good spider.

There's a daddy-longlegs currently living near my fridge, and he/she seems a very peaceable sort.

there is a spider friend living in the bathroom, behind one of the tiles in the shower.

the other night, a large green fly perched itself in the opposite corner of the room.

by morning, the tail end of the green fly could be seen sticking out of the spider's wall cave.

by evening, the two were ensued in some kind of fight to the death that would've made for an interesting japanese bug fight had it not been so painfully slow.

the next morning, the fly had disappeared and spidey was looking a lot fatter.

I don't tolerate many spiders; they tend to be large and hairy in my neighborhood. However, I have the respect the spider that spun a web around the bell of the toilet plunger. He can stay until I have to use the plunger again.

So esteemed ilx poster Roxymuzak and my friend Joseph once helped me move into a house and they put my mattress in the kitchen near the sink as a sort of joke, but also because it was heavy, and I actually made that into the place I slept. The house was between 80 and 100 years old, which is not that old by New England standards, maybe. But it was old, and had a clay basement and cracks in the floorboards. The point of this is to say that I had several spider friends, American house spiders, living in the corner next to my head and lamp, and I would watch them before I went to sleep.

Other spiders of note I saw at that house:

-the translucent white spider with the red dot who was very small yet managed to drop a thread from the ceiling nearly to the ground
-the spider who builds little cage traps on the side of the house
-the spider who builds very large, elaborate webs that cross spans wider than doorways in only an hour, and will EAT the web to reuse in the same time period (I could only approximate the species because my North American field guide is not exhaustive)
-the writing spider

Spider that lives in my driver's side wingmirror, I salute you. We've gone through thick and thin together. When I accidentally flick ash on your web and you come scurrying out, only to scowl at me and chuck it the hell out of your web, you always forgive me. <3 we will always be bros.
That time I rearended the guy in the blue sierra at 3mph and you poked your head out, i could see you going "lol". <3 u bro. I know you care. We should be facebook friends.

i just killed one. they bite me in my sleep and are not my friends.

latebloomer, Friday, 7 August 2009 11:46 (fifteen years ago)

I love those tiny ones that jump like crazy and if you look at them closely they look like Mecha-Spiders. They are the shit.

Fetchboy, Friday, 7 August 2009 11:49 (fifteen years ago)

there's prob about 100+ on our apt.'s back porch. orb weavers. they hang out near the lights so they can catch mosquitos, which is why i don't mind that they're there. i like them, their webs are beautiful and they're incredibly cool to watch when sipping on some whiskey on a summer night

mark cl, Friday, 7 August 2009 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

the birds fly in and catch them during the day tho when they're hiding in the cracks of the porch ceiling

mark cl, Friday, 7 August 2009 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

fuck a fucking spider.

i would rather be friends with a mosquito.

At first I thought it was a stupid idea, then it made me cry (Jesse), Friday, 7 August 2009 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

Joerg Hi Dere (NickB), Friday, 7 August 2009 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

Also, spiders are most excellent fellows, have never met a mean one yet

Joerg Hi Dere (NickB), Friday, 7 August 2009 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

hha i.e. this summer i've really enjoyed sitting on my back porch w/ some whiskey, watching spiders spin webs & catch mosquitos

mark cl, Friday, 7 August 2009 15:18 (fifteen years ago)

spiders themselves are not sipping whiskey

I have a snail that travels around on my bike with me, then slides off each night to nibble my nasturtiums.

(Mark, thanks for the clarification!)

Joerg Hi Dere (NickB), Friday, 7 August 2009 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

ha, otherwise webs would look like some variation on the following:

mark cl, Friday, 7 August 2009 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

spiders in my apt come and go. we had a garbage strike here recently and i gave any spiders i saw a free pass since there were flies everywhere. if they're big tho - i feed them to Mittens.

spiders i will leave you alone if you leave me alone. building your home by my bathroom sink != leaving me alone. that gets you the hoover.

ledge, Friday, 7 August 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

Oh shit Mark, is that from someone's research paper? Amazing differences obviously but wtf benefit to anyone is that?

it makes ilxors curious.

The exterminator my landlords hire has done a thorough job in eliminating all spiders from our building. The dude is wacko, he takes very obvious pleasure in his job.

I hope you promised her that you would never be a spider when you grew up.

Spiders are no friends of mine. Witness: arachnopoll of fear

The following is true all over again after looking at that god awful picture:

My entire body itches right now. Second spider is fucking awful.

spiders r jerks, I recently saw a poor fly wander its way into a web and the ensuing mauling was pretty brutal. I guess that spider can count as my pet as it was small and near my house but I could stay far far away from it, but generally they horrify me too much for me to allow them to stick around.

Is the "spiders on LSD make webs that are more geometrically perfect" thing an urban myth?

System, Friday, 7 August 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

xpost yeah, i think thats a myth

the spiders around my house are my enemies cause they make a huge web in the front yard almost every day and i always walk through it. *shudder*

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

even though i don't like spiders this thread is cute, captain lorax, it may even have helped me feel kindlier towards them.

estela, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

You can still be friends with one spider and hate a whole bunch of them, that's all I'm saying

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

maybe there is one for me out there, somewhere.

estela, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 03:47 (fifteen years ago)

I hope you find one someday. When you two meet it will be like magic. You will know right away; that spider will be the one for you.

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 04:20 (fifteen years ago)
