Ideas for ILX

Message Bookmarked

Does anyone have any ideas for things they'd like to see - I've kind of run out of ideas for now. I can't promise I'll do them: some things are easy, some are hard, some might be unrealistic (need to bear in mind performance and avoidance of poxy fules and so on); also, how much it interests me is the most important motivating factor... It'd be good to hear people's thoughts.

I will put the stats thing back at some point, but perhaps in a bit of a different form.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

Oooo!

More poll forms would be fun. One that allowed you to rank the options from first to last, say, or just allowed you to tick multiple boxes, livejournal style.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

  • make a toggle option allowing mods to see either images or image links
  • let poll options allow more characters
  • get rid of suggest ban
  • pizza subs tuesdays

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

The mod image thing is a security thing. If it weren't any sort of issue I would just turn them on.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

Oh right, you've said that before. Perhaps I am ignorant, but I don't get why it's a security thing?

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

Love Gravel's ideas.

Beanbag the Gardener (WmC), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

A preview screen. I've been tempted at times to just throw in a [//x] every once in awhile so at least the BBcode warning page will let me take a second glance.

http://tinyurl.com/bapppp (Pleasant Plains), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

It's a long and complicated story, but the root of it is that when your browser tries to go and get a picture, it doesn't check that it's a picture and if it's a piece of script instead, will just happily execute it, which can be subverted to make existing mods do things they didn't know they were doing (e.g. grant someone else mod privileges or whatever).

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:34 (sixteen years ago)

a kudos/props/Suggest Unban button, with the 51 resulting in an automatic permaban being an aggregate of the two. last time I mention this, I promise.

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

I see. What about for mods that don't have that many privileges in the first place, like me and other subboard mods? Sorry to go on about this, but 1p3 is 90% picture threads!

Also, I think ILX is great as is and I would just say: continue keeping it simple and plain.

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

Roxy, yes there's less danger there, but you can still ban people, delete posts, delete threads, unban people etc.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

I mean if it helps, happy to unmod you.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

continue keeping it simple and plain

^^^ seconded - I love love love the way that ILX threads load up super quick, compared to other boards where you're sitting around waiting for two minutes.

grocery groin (snoball), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

Sheesh, just asking!

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

galumphing lummox (bug), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

No avatars! Ever!

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

Nick, that's OK: suggest ban is the best feature I've ever come up with - I think there are any number of ways you could subtly modify it and I have changed it recently it to drop older SBs from people, but I doubt we'll ever conclude on the 'right' way for it to work, and the people who don't like it, I doubt will ever be convinced, so would be good if this thread didn't become about that; I've little doubt it'll be discussed probably at length elsewhere.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I wasn't really thinking of avatars!

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

no avatars - please, I think that's the start of a slippery slope towards phpBB style bloat

grocery groin (snoball), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

i echo Roxy's simple and plain praise. love that.

i would also love to see a magenta screen with white font option

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

I love love love the way that ILX threads load up super quick

Yes I like this - someone described other message boards as having a kind of underwater feeling... That said, ILX isn't fast because it's minimal on the screen; it's because of the server software - could afford to put quite a lot more on the screen without it becoming slow. Not that this is necessarily a good idea.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

Surm, appreciate CSS might not be your thing, but if it is, then you can make a stylesheet to look like that and I'll stick it up... There are some instructions (a little out of date, but basically OK) here: http://www.ilxor.com/ilxstyles.html

Bug, yes I was thinking that would be something I should do.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

ilx is the hottness of message boards. i do think surm's suggestion should be mandatory not optional, though. :)

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

Harbl, fixed the colour thing - it'll be Olive when I next upload the software.

blobfish russian (harbl), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

Some kind of two minute "Edit my last message" option in case of tpyos you only notice after you hit submit.

StanM, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:58 (sixteen years ago)

On the other hand, ILX is ILX because there are no Avatars or Edit after submit options. Read what you tpye before you submit and you won't post typos.

StanM, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

XML access to bookmarks that have new answers is top o my wishlist :)

stet, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

ILX threads can get so fast that it's more like chat than forum, so even 2mins can be way too long.

stet, Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

Could there be a count of the number of users online displayed at the top somewhere? Just a simple count of logged-in users (but not names, cos that would be crepey). Wouldn't be at all useful, just mildly intersting.

This is the reason I Love ILX over all others. It's both at the same time. And needs to stay that way.

"I have changed it recently it to drop older SBs from people"

this sounds like a really good idea! can i ask what the cutoff point is?

thomp, Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)

I think the general feeling is: nothing drastic, please, only small functional adjustments. Right?

StanM, Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

People who haven't posted for six months should have all the bans they've suggested returned to them in a box.

Joerg Hi Dere (NickB), Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

I would like a way to see how many SB's you have. (Now, I have no idea how annoying I am.)

StanM, Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm not a fan of SB in general, but it seems like it would do more good if a person saw that they were getting close to the mark.

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

some sort of something to fix the webmailing reply issue

http://tinyurl.com/npaahw (s1ocki), Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

Could there be a count of the number of users online displayed at the top somewhere? Just a simple count of logged-in users (but not names, cos that would be crepey). Wouldn't be at all useful, just mildly interesting.

Yeah that's a nice idea, maybe wouldn't be too difficult to do either.

Stan - I've never been convinced by people's anti-SB argument around the "for the lols" thing, because no-one can see it. This is why I didn't make it available, so that it couldn't be used in this way. That said, I've been considering maybe warning people when they get to 40 or something. This would only affect a few people. Also - I wouldn't worry about your own position re: SBs.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)

S1ocki, I don't know what the issue is. I was asked recently to remove 'reply to' from webmail, because people were being hassled off board.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)

Ok, thanks, that makes sense (why SBs aren't public). xpost

there was ever a "reply to"?

every webmail i've gotten has been unreplyable. which is ok, but maybe there shoudl be some sort of reminder to put your own email address in the message? or even an optional field for your email addy?

http://tinyurl.com/npaahw (s1ocki), Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

More poll forms would be fun. One that allowed you to rank the options from first to last, say, or just allowed you to tick multiple boxes, livejournal style.

Would like this!

Also, if you decide to _not_ bring back lists of ILX-wide stats, I would still be interested in personal stats on on each person's profile page re: how many posts they've made, how many threads they've started, etc. Or at least a way for each user to see their own info.

lag∞n, Friday, 24 January 2025 00:27 (six months ago)

btw pretty impressed with reddit users for their boycott theyre actually big and influential enough to move the needle didnt know they were cool like that, big contrast with the media failing to state the obvious

lag∞n, Friday, 24 January 2025 00:30 (six months ago)

i mean personally i’m not super interested in philosophical debates about whether it’s possible to use the internet "ethically"

far as i can tell, all i’ve done is state a preference not to see embeds that remind me of a nazi clown. and like lagoon says, if enough people feel that way, perhaps we can do our little part to sway the tide

anybody is free to get info wherever and however they want, i’m not calling anybody a bad person, but this is a community space and if enough people want to tear out the shag carpet you might have to let them -- calling them delusional libs just makes you seem like an asshole

Saw that ESPN has supposedly started pushing alerts from all their reporters like Passan etc so news drops there first, surely not a coincidence with the timing. Bluesky would attract so many sports Twitter people if you could get notifications like that right away.

I've kvetched before that I never understood the point of twit embeds/links, especially when the link was just to a tweet that was itself a link to an actual story on a news site/blog etc - why notgive the OG poster the traffic instead?

And thats what the Reddit thing's about too - stopping the traffic, hitting Elmo in the hip pocket. I'm all for it.

Well if you just post a link to an article all you get is the url - posting a tweet of an article automatically embeds the headline and the lead image, so it's much richer.

It would be nice, coming back to ideas for ILX, if posting an article's url gave you the option to automatically embedded the social card for it, in the same way as Slack, WhatApp and other chat platforms do.

Alba, Friday, 24 January 2025 20:41 (six months ago)

also tweet links are sometimes gift links to get past paywalls

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 24 January 2025 20:42 (six months ago)

we post twitter embeds all the time on the NBA board bcuz breaking sports news is very often delivered on twitter w/ no greater story attached. it's also the easiest way to post a highlight clip or video of something viral that the greater basketball world is discussing. there is a functional utility to twitter embeds even w/in our community. that said i'm def not going to throw myself in the way of people who are protesting elon musk or twitter lol

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Friday, 24 January 2025 20:51 (six months ago)

As a number of people have been saying, the twitter embeds are simply a very easy and nice feature on ILX for linking to content, and there isn't really a great replacement right now, so I get the resistance to this. It took me a long time to bail on twitter because I was so dependent on it for news, but I haven't missed it, and I think it is totally reasonable to stop having this feature when it supports a nazi oligarch who is actively ruining all of our lives.

sarahell, Friday, 24 January 2025 23:26 (six months ago)

I think I started a thread on here a while back taht got zero response, an "ILX bugs" thread, but there are two things that drive me crazy that I wish could get fixed:

1) convert html to bbcode doesn't work with links correctly. it duplicates the http and messes up the : and //.
2) when your logged in session expires, the page doesn't refresh to log you out. If you try to post in this state, you get a servelet exception, and then recovering from that is a huge pain in the ass. you have to explicitly log yourself out, log back in, and refresh a few times because if you don't you actually still can't post, the site just hangs.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Friday, 24 January 2025 23:37 (six months ago)

In the search function we can specify to search either thread titles or posts... would it be possible to add "Poll Title" as a choice there? Poll threads aren't always identified as such in their titles and i for one would find it useful if search results could be narrowed to polls only.
