Today I'm going to book a table at a "fancy" restaurant. Any suggestions?

(Though I am in London, and so those suggestions are relevant to me today, keep the thread open to other places.)

So, somewhere you'll only go once or twice a year. In my case, this is for a birthday, in a small intimate group.

st martins hotel in st martins lane is pretty swank and expensive but has a thermonuclear pudding bar (thermonuclear in the sense of DO NOT TRY AND FINISH YR PUDDING IF YOU WANT YR HEART TO FUNCTION TO ITS FULL CAPACITY)

best restaurant i have eaten in, and fairly fancy (you get followed to and from the loos, then helped back into yr chair etc etc) (though no dress code) = gordon ramsey in chelsea. it is on the pricey side though (ie 3 figure sums/person, realistically).

ANyone been to The Admiralty in Somerset House? I'm also considering Bibendum and the restaurant in the Hilton (top of the Park Lane tower). I'm avoiding anything listed as "trendy", and a bit of 20s- 30s decor would be ideal. i think in reality my list will be whittled down by availability (as i have to book for next week now)

Toby, getting followed to and from the loo is not classy, it is CREEPY STALKER behaviour. I hate places where one person shows you to your table, another brings bread, another brings water, another asks if you want a pre dinner drink, another brings the wine list, another brings the menu, another takes the order yadda yadda yadda. I do not know about fancy restaurants cos no bugger ever takes me to them *sniff*.

when emma said yadda yadda yadda, i thought "yoda yoda yoda" = i am obsessed with a popcult phantom

tom delete me now

hehe mark, well when sarah said that bouze is "VERY BAD" on anthony's love thread, all i could think of was faith in buffy's body looking in the mirror and trying our her "it's WRONG!" voice... i am sad and obsessed and it must STOP!

The Wimpy on Kingsway is classier than most. They offer you a choice of sauces on the Bender-in-a-bun.

On a side note, Alan you're the HC IT guy - did you replace my uncle when he left last year? And can you get me a job (ha!)?

Places I like in the Boston area:

Anthony's Pier 4
Maison Robert

These are the only two expensive-fancy places I've eaten in here. Other faves in a more reasonable price range includ Addis Red Sea, The Elephant Walk, Pho Republique, Pho Pasteur, Chau Chau City, newcomer The Red Fez, and Naked Fish. Avoid Bamboa like the plague; it is trendy and gives you adequate food at wildly inflated prices.

I enjoy fancy restaurants. At my age I can finally admtit this without embarassment. San Francisco is full of them, in fact I live on the same block as one of my favorites.

Which one is that?

Kris, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jardiniere.
