How is this place? How is Durham University? They have an awesome masters program I am going to apply to.

Third-oldest university in England, generally regarded as one of the best outside Oxbridge. I've never actually been but I imagine it as being very pretty, very cold, and full of posh people.

Matt is correct. Often one hears references to 'Doxbridge'. Very good, very academic place. It's lovely and picturesque. Not a great deal of nightlife. Huge Christian preponderance (although not mandatory). Can get quite cold in the winter, true. My ex went there. Does this mean Miss A herself might come and live here too? All y'all Americans are welcomed to our bosom.

We the posh people of Durham University welcome you to our 21st century existence:

Also, Bill Bryson is chancellor! Isn't that exciting.

He got to hold my ex's hand as she recited her graduation Latin. He does that for every graduand. He's surely the first of many successful American imports to Durham University.

The lass with the cameraphone could have at least tried to make the same facial expression. While looking at the cameraphone.

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

And holding the cameraphone with her right hand.

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

That would have been too much work.

Bill Bryson would be a good reason to go.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

Watch out for neanderthals from Esh Winning and Langley Park looking for a bit of pugilistic action on a Saturday night.

Often one hears references to 'Doxbridge'.

Really? I mean, outside of Durham University itself?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

Also, the cameraphone is the wrong way round.

(I went to Leeds)

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

There is something very Footlights University about that shot.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

Well, my ex introduced me to the term while a grad student at Cambridge. Think it may be a Durham thing. She did say it was coming into common usage.

If you fancy a class night on the tiles, Newcastle is a short train-ride away

Doxbridge makes it sound like a school for dachshunds.

Durham Durham (UK)

Silly question, there's bound to be, but is there a Durham in the US? One of some significance, that is.

If you're into walking Upper Teesdale is just on your doorstep and is extremely quiet, compared to say Wensleydale or the Peak District.

The chancellor snapped him up after the Holland game; by the time Russia played Germany, it was too late...
