Interesting.

This may surprise some people, but I'm going with fish. Nothing makes me *feel* better. Raw fish makes me positively lively. I take fish oil supplements regularly, and they have a noticeable effect on my mood and productivity. I love a good rare steak, or a serious piece of lamb, but fish seems to feed me better.

To save myself interminable agonies between Beef, Pork and Fish I'm going to cut my losses now and vote Pork for probably giving me the greatest and most varied joys down the years. But sheesh, I'd spend hard hours on this otherwise. Hoping somebody writes-in for Kangaroo or Horse or something (Kangaroo at least is very nice, as is Venison, which I'm hoping gets a vote or two)

Damn, I meant venison as a catch-all category, but I should have noted the last line:

Venison can describe meat of any animal killed by hunting.[1] It was originally applied to any animal from the families Cervidae (deer), Leporidae (hares), and Suidae (wild pigs), and certain species of the genus Capra (goats and antelopes), such as elk, red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, moose, reindeer/caribou, pronghorn, brown hare, arctic hare, blue hare, wild boar, and ibex, but its usage is now almost entirely restricted to the flesh of various species of deer.

Black bread and Victory gin AGAIN? (kenan), Thursday, 6 August 2009 06:31 (fifteen years ago) link

xp kenan

nope, not Jewish. did grow up with poorly made pork chops (sorry, Mom), and wanted nothing to do with pork until a couple of years ago (my gf changed my life by cooking me her pork loin recipe, which rivals the best Filet Mignon I've ever had, and is a serious candidate for a death row meal). both fish and pork are fairly recently acquired tastes for me. I think a big reason why is because I realized my body just does not digest beef very well the older I get, so I had to try some stuff.

xxp I fear a day when all butchers are supermarket butchers instead of old-school, skilled masters of the carcasses.

Black bread and Victory gin AGAIN? (kenan), Thursday, 6 August 2009 06:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Gotta go with pork strictly for all the sausages. Fish and other seafood would be the close second. But in terms of what I actually eat the most, chicken would win by a substantial margin.

joygoat, Thursday, 6 August 2009 06:37 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah I definitely eat more chicken than anything else, but it's like my 5th choice on that list.

Highly trained BBQ chef (rockapads), Thursday, 6 August 2009 06:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Right after a friend gave me his old slow cooker, I immediately went into the grocery store and up to the meat counter and asked for shoulder. I even explained my intentions: "I'm making a pot roast. A center cut would be best, chuck will work, an arm roast will suffice. Top blade? Bottom blade? Bottom round? Anything?" They looked at me like... like you'd look at me if I'd just said that to you. This is the meat department, right?

Apparently the butcher in a supermarket knows as much about how to cut up a cow as I know about how to cut a sandwich in half, and no more.

Pork belly, propped up on some halved apples, water in the roasting dish, roasted for 4 hours on a low heat, topping the water up so it steams as it roasts, fatty-side-up so it bastes itself with its own fat as it cooks, and salt rubbed into the fat so it crisps, served with apple sauce and roast parsnips and roast potatoes and gravy made with the water from the pork belly roasting dish... FUCKING HEAVEN.

lol @ "creepy lurking vegetarians". I had a feeling that option might do well, but surprised to see it #2. Really surprised to see fish so low, too. I thought for sure fish or pork would take it.

Lamb higher than chicken says more about this board and where people are posting from I think. I have met so many people from the midwest who have never even tried lamb, and consider the idea of eating it to be "weird" like eating goat or kangaroo.

I don't often disagree with you marcos, but other than bacon, pork is boring and smells of farmyards.

Lamb on the other hand...

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 12:48 (eight years ago) link

dog latin i felt that way for a long time growing up w/ my mom's pork chops which were exceptionally dry and boring, but then i embraced the many delicious ways that my dad's family from peru prepared pork which is pretty different, i think getting to know mexican cuisine too has made me realize that meat from pigs is the most versatile and delicious

marcos, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 14:09 (eight years ago) link

Oh yeah, my mum's a great cook but her pork chops were never my faves for similar reasons. This might be a transatlantic difference really. As far as I'm lead to believe, the pork and beef industry in America is huge, and naturally that will affect the cuisine. Pork dishes in central and south America must be great, I can imagine. If I'm eating red meat in a restaurant though, I generally choose lamb - a more distinct flavour and something of a treat as even in the UK, lamb isn't terribly cheap. Gimme shellfish over any of these though.

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 14:14 (eight years ago) link

feel like intensively farmed pork chops are one of the worst meats around. they were always dry as a bone when i was a kid, took years to get over that. if i buy them at a nice butcher they are actually a lot nicer.

the pork chop is also prob one of the more boring forms of pork anyway, compared with belly, ribs, sausages, black and white pudding, bacon, etc etc.

in a way i prefer shellfish to all of these, but i think part of its allure is the fact i've eaten less of it in my life.

in another way, maybe chicken is best. have prob eaten more chicken than any other meat. you don't have to do a lot with it and it's not expensive.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 14:20 (eight years ago) link

the pork chop is also prob one of the more boring forms of pork anyway, compared with belly, ribs, sausages, black and white pudding, bacon, etc etc.

Yeah I think I overlooked pork's versatility. All I think of when I hear the word 'pork' are those dry chops. Nice pork is fab, I take it back.

Re: Chicken, I was thinking about this the other day and despite it being kind of a bit boring, I figured that were I to go vegetarian, it would most likely be chicken that tempts me back. It's versatile and delicious. You can have it in curry, fried, roasted... my god it's good!
