I'm voting for Bull Terrier assuming it's an English Bull Terrier.

Bull Terriers are Spot the Budweiser Dog dogs.

Dalmatians are the perfect size and are dumb as hell like any good dog should be. But I just can't deal with the spots. Too decorative. So, seeing as how Greyhounds and six-toed Norwegian Lundehunds have been left off the list I'm going with German Shephard (Dog).

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

American Cocker Spaniels are pretty awesome too though.

nate woolls, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

If I ever got a dog, I think it would have to be a mutt. From what I gather, breeds always seem to have some weird health problems.

mizzell, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

if i had a Weimaraner i'd probably just be trying to re-enact the Blue Monday video all the time by making it stand on tennis balls

unban dictionary (blueski), Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

having GISed a number of these, I think I'm just not a big fan of "breeds". What's JJusten's dog?

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

my girlfriend's beagle mix (suspect there may be some corgi in there as well) can be a little high strung, but overall a v awesome dog imo.

my favorite dog (Marty!) I had growing up was a 1/2 cocker, 1/2 chow. he was really smart and well-tempered, which an adult neighbor who seemed to know a lot about dogs thought was strange. according to this dude cocker spaniels supposedly aren't the brightest and chows can be real dicks. <-- i have no idea if any of this is true tho

Pug although I am a recently converted fan of Corgis. To be honest I like most dogs except for really small yappy ones.

No Australian Sheepdog, no cred. Not to mention the uncommon but excellent Icelandic Sheepdog, a pup of which we almost bought last week, until I hardened my heart. Our dog is indifferent to other dogs, and even thought I WANT WANT WANT one of these dogs, purebred puppies will always find a home—I'd rather get a rescue dog.

Akitas are gorgeous.

ENBB, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

Akitas scare me! We had a neighbor with a vicious one.
Breeding for extreme body forms is so wrong. The flattened faces that give the dog respiratory trouble, the massive size that brings bad hips.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

i guess of the ones listed i have particular affection for westies and dachshunds

lex pretend, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

Ditto re: Chihuahuas. Nasty.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

re: purebreeds and health problems - this doesnt have to be the case, but it takes a concerted effort among good breeders to breed for useful stuff like temperment and longevity. the problem comes in when markings and coloring trump all other aspects of the dog, or when people breed dogs to be unnaturally large (or small). Henry is a case in point - puppy mill bernese usually only live for 6 years and are super susceptible to joint problems and liver cancer (!), but the dogs in his bloodline all lived for an average of 12 years. so breeding is not a bad thing (actually can be beneficial) but it has to be done right and often it isn't.

sorry, didnt mean to derail

xpost: yep exactly what beth is saying

Westies and Cairns are sweet. Same dog, really—Westies are just white Cairns.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

It's between Labrador Retriever, Siberian Husky, and Border Collie for me. I'll go with Border Collie since I have one and he is an endless source of amusement and fun, the only thing that counts against them is that they are neurotic fuckers. Huskies are great because you're practically walking down the street with a wolf which is pretty cool.

Chihauhuas fall into that small yapping category I mentioned before. I'm sure there are some nice ones out there but in general I'm not a fan.

ENBB, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)

I guess I would prob vote for a Bernese Mountain Dog, then. Although a family friend had a Chesapeake Bay retriever a few years ago and she was a lovely dawg and strong as an ox.

Not that I hate on purebreds or anything. I pretty much like all dogs, though I find chows and german shepherds a little aloof.

lots of people hate on yappy dogs but in my experience it's only the badly treated ones which are that yappy or neurotic - my mother had tibetan spaniels and all i've encountered have been fine.

I had a Tibetan terrier (very similar dog) in high school and she was great! Not a foo-foo yip-yip dog, they have a big dog personality & smarts in a fluffball body.

SCOTTISH PEOPLE ONLY (I M Losted), Friday, 16 January 2015 14:44 (ten years ago)

Tash is my second experience with a Lhasa Apso, the first was Finn, a couple of months ago. Tash is a puppy, Finn is a grumpy old man. Finn didnt like it when Tash arrived at his house, but when Finn was brought to Tash's house he was more ok with it. I felt comfortable with Finn a few months, and so i was ready for Tash.

I picked up Tash and rubbed her tummy

anvil, Friday, 16 January 2015 15:44 (ten years ago)

My favourite breeds are Jack Russell and Border Collie. But we've always had them in our farming family. But it's hard to imagine me preferring anything over Jack Russells.

four months pass...

do any of y'all have a border collie or B.C. mix?

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 23:18 (ten years ago)

I've never had one personally but I've spent a lot of time around them...? They are my aunt's dog of preference. They're really pretty and can be really smart, although one of her current ones is a bit dim and the other one is a bit weird. I was staying with my aunt last year for a few weeks and the dim dog barked insanely at me or my brother or other half every time she saw us in the house and didn't get used to our presence until a couple days before I left. The weird dog constantly stalks their cat, always with a chew toy in its mouth -- I guess so it already has something to chew on and isn't tempted to chomp the cat? Not that it could catch it, the cat appears to be smarter than the dogs.

My aunt and her husband both work daytime office jobs and travel a lot so the dogs spend a lot of time at dog daycare. Probably not the best breed of dog for that lifestyle, let alone two of them.

salsa shark, Thursday, 11 June 2015 07:02 (ten years ago)

I grew up with a collie cross labrador. He'd been born on a farm and hadn't had the best start in life so was always a little boisterous. Great fun and nice temperament otherwise, but LOTS of energy.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 12 June 2015 08:30 (ten years ago)

can't imagine having any other kind of dog to be honest. always find them to be very intelligent & sensitive to what's going on around them. and yes to the lots of energy^
