nobody watches starz

Kerm, Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

While I like Party Down a lot, Eastbound & Down was just on another level entirely for me.

ENBB, Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

Kenny Powers is my hero.

J4mi3 H4rl3y (Snowballing), Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

Yes. Kenny Powers is incredible. <3 <3 <3

I watched E&D again recently and a lot of it was even better the 2nd time around.

ENBB, Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

i think eastbound & down really plateaued after like the second episode and i think that party down has more episodes. also think party down has a much stronger cast and way better writing, whereas eastbound & down has danny mcbride's obv classic character and a kinda weak supporting cast

crutboard dudes get subway, totally (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

think that party down has more episodes

this is a very unique opinion that i have. of course i meant "more funny episodes"

crutboard dudes get subway, totally (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

lol Jordan.

I see what you're saying but honestly Kenny is enough to make E&D the winner for me.

I also thought Party Down started really slowly but agree that the last 3/4 of the episodes are A++.

ENBB, Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't seen an episode of Party Down that I didn't at least enjoy a little bit.

I'm bummed Jane Lynch isn't coming back for S2.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

Interesting to see this particular TV show fite, as I have been strongly recommending Party Down to my friend who is in love with E&D (and McBride in general). I think E&D wins by a nose because the pathos is mostly concentrated on one epic character rather than being spread out amongst an ensemble of v. strong characters. However, I feel that E&D ended perfectly and I would be fine never seeing another episode (and would prefer to not see more than another season or two unless they find a new angle to work). Party Down, being more of a slow-burner with a slightly broader concept, has a lot more potential as an ongoing series.

Both of these series play right into my hands, though, me being a huuuuuge fan of The Larry Sanders Show and the UK Office.

Hi, there you're being haunted! Dont you notice it? (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 9 August 2009 23:43 (sixteen years ago)

also party down loses points for being a direct rip off of the office - all the characters are the same and everything - its still super sweet btw

ice cr?m, Monday, 10 August 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

I thought of something else - E&T *touched* me more. I actually cried during the last episode when he dumped the teacher lady at the gas station and drove away. With PD I thought I was supposed to feel bad for Cloverfield girl and that guy but I really didn't. I guess I just felt more connected to Kenny Powers and his struggles in this cruel world. Like I said earlier I did like PD but just not in the same way.

ENBB, Monday, 10 August 2009 01:34 (sixteen years ago)

should have been E&D not E&T obv.

ENBB, Monday, 10 August 2009 01:35 (sixteen years ago)

Party Down, no fucking contest

some dude, Monday, 10 August 2009 03:42 (sixteen years ago)

although now that I've seen Foot First Way i do appreciate E&D more for doing well what they'd previously done really really badly.

voting for party down since it made me laugh harder.

d/l'd party down cos of this thred. can't say it's a fucking mile better than E&D, it's pretty awesome tho. I've watched baot 7 eps. the guy we're meant to be 'invested in' is sometimes ott mopey, but he is generally hilarious.

Funniest is the blond dude/sci fi lunatic relationship imo.

wilter, Friday, 14 August 2009 02:13 (sixteen years ago)

..and Jane Lynch obv

wilter, Friday, 14 August 2009 02:14 (sixteen years ago)

the woman who replaced jane lynch in the last episode was really funny i thought

Yup.

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 02:18 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, she's amazing and was v v funny in the episode. What's great too is that she and Jane Lynch were girlfriends in "Best in Show" so I enjoyed the connection in PD a lot.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 14 August 2009 02:19 (sixteen years ago)

lol we were watching the birthday party boat episode and thought the chasing amy chick was stifler's mum. dams she look old.
xp

wilter, Friday, 14 August 2009 02:20 (sixteen years ago)

(it was the chasing amy chick wasn't it? she has that voice)

wilter, Friday, 14 August 2009 02:21 (sixteen years ago)

Yep - Joey Lauren Adams. I haven't seen her in anything in a long time so that was sort of sad. Birthday party boat episode may be my favorite one because J.K. Simmons was so funny.

ahhhh was sad because she did look pretty old

Joey Lauren Adams has not aged well, I agree.

ice cr?m, Friday, 14 August 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

fwiw i kinda sorta hate The Office but love Party Down (while acknowledging its obvious influence/similarities)

some dude, Friday, 14 August 2009 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

i haven't gotten around to E&D yet but party down is the funniest shit i've seen in awhile.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 14 August 2009 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

E&D is much much meaner (and generally less funny IMO.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

E&D is grittier and cruder but i'm not sure it's actually meaner. imo PD being able to make their sci fi nerd outcast a total dick with no redemptive arc really showed that they weren't gonna pull a lot of punches.

some dude, Friday, 14 August 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

No one in E&D has redemptive qualities though (well maybe his brother.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

i guess they never popped anyone's eye out of its socket, so i'll give you that (xpost)

some dude, Friday, 14 August 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

Which is fine, but E&D strikes me as much more Nighty Night to PD's The Office.

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

E&D to me works kind of on the same level as, say, The Big Lebowski, where w/ some of the characters even when they're being awful or stupid or crazy, there's a big window for people who wanna go "fuck yeah, this guy is awesome and hilarious" anyway, which to me doesn't make the depictions of those characters very 'mean' per se

some dude, Friday, 14 August 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

no one on party down can come close to matching this guys charisma http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:wrQVtkrZ4ll-gM:http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_60WoYLP7uBU/SagqH5EJACI/AAAAAAAAAM4/aKQKEw7Jebg/s320/Danny%2BMcBride.jpg

ice cr?m, Friday, 14 August 2009 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

The whole tone strikes me as mean as though (more than just the depictions and yeah it's clear that the makers think that Kenny Powers is fucking awesome I'll give you that.) It's not a show where I am going to feel good about anyone or anything that's happening to them as amusing as I may find bits of it to be.

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

I don't really like the Big Lebowski though either so maybe I'm just not the target audience.

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 17:21 (sixteen years ago)

think he means they were caught by a whore and ur meant to relate to them cos of that

cozwn, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

There are a lot of shows where the leads are normal and everyone else is whacky. That's not exactly an innovation of the American Office.

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

You're just mad cuz you got whore caught.

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

anyway theyre filmed and acted in exactly the same style - they have the same tone - theyre abt disillusioned people and their shitty job etc etc duh

ice cr?m, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

Uh isn't the American Office a pseudo-doc w/ a lot of looks at the camera? And isn't Party Down not like that at all?

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

ok except for the doc part and jim winking at the camera - its t=still all handheld single camera action

ice cr?m, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

I think the ways they're different probably outnumber the ways they're alike, but whatever. Even if it was a straight rip, it'd still be a good show.

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

i agree that its a good show - its just v obviously inspired by

ice cr?m, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

There are a lot of shows where the leads are normal and everyone else is whacky. That's not exactly an innovation of the American Office.

^This. It's a stock comic formula (center and eccentrics) which is pretty effing ubiquitous throughout the history of the sitcom, at the very least.

another thoroughly exhausting autotuned song about The Club (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 14 August 2009 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

Also, if anything I'd argue that the UK Office is a more direct inspiration insofar as it features a lot more pathos than its US counterpart.

another thoroughly exhausting autotuned song about The Club (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 14 August 2009 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

i mean do the normals always have a drawn out ambiguous romantic relationship - are they always under achievers - is it always a dire work place setting - is their boss always needy and ineffectual - is the second lead weird always an aspie nerd - is it always a single hand held camera set up - is there always no laugh track - are u always getting me riled over something so stupid and obvious

ice cr?m, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

I count six.

1) It's not that drawn out or ambiguous. They're fucking in the third episode.
2) They aren't underachievers. Nothing indicates these folks are good actors, comedians, writers or human beings.
3) Sometimes
4) I do agree that the Marino/Carrell similarity is probably the strongest point of similarity.
5) Uh it isn't a single camera set-up in Party Down. Unless my memory is incorrect there are cuts all over the place.
6) These days, yes.

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 August 2009 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

1 they have chemistry for the 1st half of the season they fuck then shes all like im not that into it then shes like i am into then shes like im going on a cruise for 6 months see u - def ambigious

2 theyre totally underachievers - they may not be good actors be theyre def too smart for those jobs - same w/the office - its the main underlying theme of the show

3 yeah its dire - once again the main these

4 and dwight and scifi nerd guy

5 eh i cant remember and i dont have them to check but def naturalistic hand held set up

6 as inspired by the office

I don't recall arguing that the show wasn't inspired by the Office, just pointing out that most of your arguments were garbage (which they still are.)
