My MacBookPro just got wet!!!!

I was having breakfast this morning at the kitchen table. While loading music on my ipod, I went to reach for my coffee without looking and tipped it over. The coffee ran into the back of my laptop and it instantly died. It's been an hour and when I turn it on the screen won't come come on. Will it work again? It's only 4 months old. Uggggh!

Opps wrong board, I meant to post this on ILE. Can this be moved? No sugar, just a little cream.

the best thing to do is to remove the battery and magsafe, and let it dry for 48-72 hours, maybe blast it with a hairdryer. you want to make sure it's absolutely dry internally before trying to turn it back on. if it's one of the new unibody's you can probably remove part or all of the bottom to facilitate drying.

if it's toast you could try bringing it into an Apple store and saying something like "I don't know what happened!" however I think MBP's come with internal humidity strips which indicate if stuff was spilled on it so you may be out of luck. also if it smells like coffee well it'll be hard to say that with a straight face!

If, after drying out, it powers up successfully, make sure to back up your hard drive & keep backing it up on a regular basis. Sometimes the corrosion created by moisture can take a long time to eat away at your circuitry until one day, down the line, blammo! white screen.

Learned about this the hard way, unfortunately.

Disagreeing with me would make you a carpist. (Pillbox), Sunday, 9 August 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for moving this thread. I feel like a total ass, and I've tried so hard to keep any drinks far away from my computer. Thankfully I have a time capsule, so all of my music is saved and most of my data. Sill if it doesn't work, I'll be without a computer for at least 2 to 3 months; once I leave for work next week. Which will be hard since I used my laptop for watching movies and keeping in touch with friends, as well as reading and posting here.

I already tried to turn it on, I hope that didn't cause more damage. I won't try it again for a few days.

It might even be longing before I can afford a macbook pro. I might have to settle on a regular macbook. It was just a normal day, then this!

Did it survive???

That thread saddens me to tears......

probably not what you wanted to see - anyway you might luck out and it might turn on again. depending on what's damaged I'd say it'd probably cost anywhere from $300-1000 to repair...

I'm heading to a store to find a tiny screwdriver to remove the tiny screws to see how bad it looks.

Jacob Sanders, Sunday, 9 August 2009 21:37 (sixteen years ago)

I removed the underside and there was a little coffee on the removable back, and not too much on the circuit board, I used a blow dyer on low heat and dried everything. Should I leave the bottom off until I decide to turn in on or should I close it up?

Jacob Sanders, Sunday, 9 August 2009 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

if you're impatient it's probably safe to try turning it back on but I'd wait 24 hours. you should leave it propped up with the bottom open so that dust doesn't get in. if you keep your A/C on put it in its airflow - it'll help further with the dehumidification process

Last Sunday, hours after posting on this thread in response to JS' dilemma, I experienced my own EXTREME HARDWARE MALFUNCTION (but my MBP didn't get wet, it just decided it had had enough & resigned from its position).

The good news is: I have a new MacBook Pro!

The bad: I had to buy a new MacBook Pro.

A week after the fact, my local Mac shop revealed a seemingly easy HD replacement was, in fact, rooted in a more complicated dilemma & $300 turned into $1300, so I laid the old beast to rest & re-equipped. Now I just have to pull some crazy all-nighters to meet extended project deadlines, at least once I conquer the debacle of reupping misc. Adobe apps from my poor, embattled old HD, now housed in a little metal box to my right.

I got a lot of reading, cleaning & cycling in during my week off from tha internet, but it is nice to see you again ILX!

After waiting to days and taking my Mac apart, I put every back together. Plugged in and it powered up. But it won't shut off or go to sleep.
It turns itself back on. Is this a sign of a serious problem?

having my own issues with Mac support for my MBP, but I have one of these:

They also do clear/plain ones, would highly recommend one...

How long did you have your MBP Pillbox? E.g. would repairs have been covered by Mac-care if you had it?

Bob Six, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 07:10 (sixteen years ago)

My old machine was bogged down by a series of lemony issues that seemed to materialize (naturally) just after the stock 1-yr. warranty expired (had it for only about 2.5 yrs). This time around, I will def. spring for the extended 3-yr without batting an eye & would recommend all Mac users/purchasers do the same.

I stick by Macs for the fluidity of their performance w/ Adobe SW & their seeming imperviousness to malware type stuff, but they release some glitchy ass shit & just b/c yr spending a mint on a machine does not mean it is not going to flip you the bird way before it has a legitimate right to (hard lessons).
