A list or a discussion of what kind of posting makes you want to click the SB. Or actually click it. Suggested guidelines:

a) There's a bunch of other threads for debating the merits/demerits of the system. This is for something else.
b) No publicity for erstwhile ILXors and professional controversialists.
c) Let's recognise and celebrate diversity thru the medium of SBing people.

d) We're probably all massive hypocrites so hey, how about trying to avoid the old ad hom?

1. People who turn up on threads on ILM to remind us yet again that they hate a particular band/genre, without actually adding anything to the discussion

I've never clicked SB, but I'm most tempted to whenever an unfamiliar name tries for first-response-hall-of-fame on a promising thread.

2. Threads where the intention is blatantly to get some hot challopy clusterfuck action going, because the subject has been thrashed thru 20 times in the last month e.g. why does black people never want to indie? etc

I have never clicked it. I can imagine situations where I would consider it, possibly, mostly personal attacks on people, but it'd have to be pretty far over the line before I did.

I have never sb'd but probably something racist might make me use it. But then again maybe not even that.

3. people repeatedly talking shit about recently deceased on threads started to post yr RIPs or share fond memories (thankfully not referring to anything regarding the recent passing of our buddy B).

4. Starting what feels like huge amounts of polls in a short space of time about relatively minority interest subjects with an unworkable number of voting options and a month-long deadline.

not naming any names but what most of the people who hit 51 have in common is an inability to cease engaging in behavior that theyve been repeatedly asked to stop

also judging by my posting habits and the fact that im fairly high on the list id guess that five-to-six-word snarky posts in threads that other people are taking v seriously is a pretty good way to garner an SB or two

5. If someone references a Mission of Burma song in a thread title, that would really piss me off. Never seen it yet though.

6. Anybody who says "Lock Thread" after announcing their opinion on Best something/POO/whatever, as if their awesome pronouncement and judgement has rendered all further discussion unnecessary.

Things that send me reaching for the button:

- Really obvious Wagemann-style trolling (this is way out in front actually)
- Creepiness
- Ostentatious disregard for celebrity death
- Consistently making the same point again and again and again without engaging with people who are trying to debate with you, particularly if this involves tedious grandstanding
- Outright nastiness/rote image zings/ridiculously flying off handle about something
- Posting images that are just outright horrible
- Posters talking down to people who disagree with them like they are idiots

btw i pretty much only use it when one poster is pretty clearly being a dick to another. personal attacks are about it afaic

I think this will mostly break down between people who mainly hate personal attacks, and people who get irritated by posting styles or some of the stuff already listed. I'm wondering, really, which side out-SBs the other? Plus maybe it ought to be clear what kind of stuff at least some posters find maddening.

Yeah, I've never done this, but I can imagine using it in the event of hatefulness or a personal attack. I'm a full-grown adult with somewhat functional psychic armor, so I don't get butthurt over much else.

Stan - it pretty much has to involve blood, death, genitalia or combination of above for a pic to count as outright horrible.

Something that SB *does* seem to have cut out is furious image bombing in order to try and kill a thread, unless cute animals are involved.

- repeated attempts to be funny or zingy which aren't actually funny at all
- being a dick to someone else who wasn't being a dick in the first place

- general bullying behaviour

I think the imagebombing still happens occasionally, I've always thought the mods have been reasonable judges of when a thread probably deserves to be left to bombardment.

can't remember if have SBed anyone or not. did pretty much decide not to but may have done so beforehand.

It would take someone promoting nazism or paedophilia for me to click on that button. People using SB only cause they're annoyed by someone have a tolerance issue imo.

Serious answers:

1) feuding and personal attacks on posters. (Though thankfully most of the people who repeatedly engaged in this kind of activity have been removed either by SB or Mod Action.)

2) blatant sexism or misogyny. This is almost a kneejerk thing, I don't waste time arguing with people who pull this crap, I just bit the SB. Often repeatedly.

3) those who speak ill of the dead. Like Fetchboy describes, people who go amoung grieving people specifically to wind them up and cause trouble. Except, I'm sorry, I did do this on the B thread. Emotions were running high.

I don't think I would ever hit SB just on someone because I disagreed with what they were saying. It's more the intent, if I think they are trying to deliberately hurt or upset someone. Except for blatant misogyny. That shit has no place in the modern world.

- When a poster is straight up cruel to another person or group of people on the board, with no apparent provocation or basis for the cruelty (not that cruelty, by definition, is justifiable but I can usually recognize the difference between somebody being straight up hateful and a long-evolving, no-holds-barred beef).
- When a poster is unapologetically (or sometimes even cluelessly, if said cluelessness appears willful) misogynist, especially if that poster advocates or excuses violence against women or rape.
- Creepy, stalky, threatening awfulness (often a subset of previous).
- Racism, willful, clueless, or otherwise.
- This one is more cumulative, but if a poster is being nonstop judgmental or condescending about a particular activity or thing to the point that the otherwise very pleasant discussion about said activity or thing turns into nothing more than the soon-to-be SB'd poster's tirade about why that activity or thing sucks. This is fifth in the list, but in terms of my personal tolerance, this is orders of magnitude more tolerable to me than the first four scenarios.

iirc it was for posting something assholish while drinking. self-hating SB-er.

I should maybe have cross-referenced this with a "How seriously do you take SBs?" question. I honestly know that it's not cool to SB people just for annoying the fuck out of me, but I have faith in the system as a whole that it takes a concerted effort of annoyance for somebody to get 51d and I can just vent my spleen like some grumpy old man sounding his car horn without any long term bad effects.

I've SB'd a few people, but for most of them the reasons have been unmemorable to me.

The one case that I distinctively remember was and_what, who at the time was just posting links on a regular basis to news stories about racism and/or news stories that were racist. I felt that his behavior was really one-note and I just don't think of ILX as my one-stop shopping internet repository for racism.

Looking back on this, I wish I hadn't SB'd him and instead had engaged with him more constructively in a dialog, but that was really before the SB shit started to hit the fan.

yeah i take them moderately seriously only because i know that if i sb someone for simply being annoying i'm probably only one of a few so my sb won't mean anything and i can go ahead and do it

I think at first it was just kind of a "grrr, argh, I hate you!" reflex and I didn't take it too seriously.

Until Tuomas got SB'd, and that quite upset me, and I started using them a lot less frequently and more carefully since.

I think I SB'd one particular poster who was obviously Calum about thirty times in one sitting. I don't even know if that's really possible.

glad lamp came to speak some truth on a generally humorless thread...it's pretty clear that the only people who get 51'd have completely asked for it or needed it, so i don't feel too bad about the (very) rare lolSB. the only people i SB really are 1) racists/homophobes 2) humorless butthurt posters and 3) lame ILM trolls like makeitpop

As far as I understand it, each person can only SB another person one time so hitting it repeatedly or even every time you log in won't do anything.

Yeah, that's why I wonder whether it would be more effective -- in the case of someone who hasn't already proven themself unrepentant -- to let them know you SB'ed them, than to just push the button.

I didn't intend the thread to be a horrible idea, I thought we could air some stuff that doesn't usually make it into the pro/con SB debate, I was quite careful to try not to make it clusterfucky. But how people use/don't use the system in practice seemed worth discussing.

The circumstance under which I SB: I recognize a fair amt of names on the board, mostly as people I like. Every once in a while there is a person who gets up my hackles to the point where I associate them with being a dick. Then if I see them being a dick again, really acting like a big syphilitic dick, then I SB.

That kind of sums it up pretty well.

I've only ever SB'ed one person - Passantino. I'd never even think about SBing anyone else unless it was a rampant newb troll, I dont think. Despite our posting history for eg, I miss sparring with ethan. But I'm not happy with the knowledge a person's on the board who actively hates me but for zero reason (as in, we've never argued), which means they actively hate me - to the point of mockery and unkindness behind my back - because I am me!

I apparently have a couple SB's, and rlly, the only reason has to be either someone was joeking or they plain don't like my posting style, cuz I dont tend to antagonise/start fights/be nasty so, I dunno.
