Another Sandwich Thread

OK, so I've admitted I'm very sandwich-focused, as well as my admiration for New York delis, preferable Jewish delis. I love a chicken salad sandwich with a nice pickle along with. You can get one at Lee's, the Chinese-run, fast and super-cheap chain of delis for $3.95. But it's totally bland, just like all their sandwiches, and way too heavy on the mayonaise. There's a Chicago-style Jewish deli near my house that makes a nice sandwich, but they're always like 7 or 8 dollars, which is too much money.

So on my way back to the office today after looking at an apartment, I walk by Dave's Jewish Deli, and think, "hmmm, this is a possibility". I was dismayed to have the sandwich made by an Asian woman, though (don't get me wrong, I'm not racist, and have dated and continue to date lots of Asian guys. But in a Jewish deli I want a Jew to make my sandwich. So sue me.) And the menu board didn't feature any prices. I bring it to the cashier, and she says $9.95. $9.95!!! For a chicken salad sandwich!! I had her repeat the price two more times I was so shocked and confused that I'd be asked to pay so much. It's easily the most I've ever paid for a take-out sandwich all by itself in my life.

It was made generously, but I was depressed to find it had no tomato on it. A leaf of lettuce. That's it. Too much mayonaise, too. If you've paid more for a deli sandwich, I want to hear about it.

I actually feel a little sick to my stomach now as well.

ACHTUNG! That is ridiculous Sean! Not even at COSI have I been jacked so opprobriously. Your favorite deli in New York must = Eisenberg's on 5th Ave. which must have the greasiest windows and the oldest counter guys in the world, guys who refer to pea soup as "bowl of pea" and rye bread as "whiskey" and who don't even pay attention to you until you bark at them. It's the only place I've had a tuna melt where the tuna was actually warm all the way through. Miles beyond Katz's, at which I'm sure a $10 sandwich can be finagled.

I went to my favorite deli so often that the owner stopped charging me for my meals, because I'd been going there since he opened and he appreciated the show of support. Even when I was paying it was like 6 bucks or so for a giant, perfect sandwich and a cup of soup. I am sure nothing else will be able to compare ever again.

Sean, there is a place called Quincys on Market between Van Ness and 10 St. The sandwiches are cheap (under $5). The bread and meat and salads are good. You get free plums with yr sandwich. It's not Jewish or NYC style, but it's really good (good corned beef, pastrami, egg salad, etc). During lunchtime the lines are long and they close before 3 most weekdays (and they aren't open on the weekends). When I used to work near there I thought it was fantastic and it's been around for ages (which means hopefully it hasn't shut down). Obv the place yr talking about is Moishe Pipics (sic??) which is good as well, but a little too price-y for my tastes as well. East/West Deli gets good props from everyone, but it's supposed to be expensive too. Anyway, good luck. :)

Thanks Alex; can I opt for a pickle instead of a plum? :)

As a public service, I must correct my above statement. The $9.95 chicken salad sandwich came from DAVID'S deli (Since 1952!), not Dave's. Please avoid.

I think sandwiches are overrated. Furthermore, they encourage short lunch breaks, food that is often in a cold and/or salady state, eating whilst walking or at one's desk, absence of plates and other such evils. And $9.95! That's even quite alot in British pounds.

I thought $6 was bad for a sandwich (but then I am a total cheapass), but $10 for a sandwich is complete and utter mentalism.

There is a bar near me that charges between $8-10 for a sandwich, but the sandwich is the size of your head so people normally order a half (which is still much bigger than most sandwiches).

Nicole, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds reasonable enough -- but is it a good sandwich?

Taco Mesa is my saviour with tortas, oh yes. Wahoo's not far behind. Then there's Boudin's, which is much better than nothing, and etc. etc.

There was a fine sandwich place here next to campus many moons back. Then it was forced out by the rents and a crapulous 'wrap' place took over. It died within six months, happily.
