Bike or Foot

it's like i have a couple worked up orc dicks under my arms (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

train (overground; local) 0 but Foot 5 pushed it very hard

cockles (country matters), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

train (overground, long distance). Space to move, work, eat. I love a sleeping car when there is the chance. I just wish the experience in the US was as good as Europe.

Mornington Crescent (Ed), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

elevated train for real. you see shit + get there

jergins, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

foot

permanent response lopp (harbl), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:39 (sixteen years ago)

fine, I'll cop to it ... car

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

car is too dangerous imo

permanent response lopp (harbl), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

on foot you can get mugged.

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:41 (sixteen years ago)

foot = connection with nature, man. bike = my fave form of exercise. car = you! in control of extremely heavy and fast moving object! with music! trams = quaint. trains and boats and planes = all pretty awesome pieces of engineering.

ledge, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:42 (sixteen years ago)

train overground/long distance no contest. Its like being in a moving living room - scenic, luxurious, low key, plus there's a bar and you can mingle with the other passengers if you like, or just read or look out the window or do whatever. the best.

go Nick go! Scrub that paint! Scrub it!! Yeah!! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:42 (sixteen years ago)

do they still have smoking cars/areas on US trains?

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:43 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i like to be able to read while moving too so cars are bad

permanent response lopp (harbl), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

as a passenger in a car, you are thoroughly able to read.

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

i get motion sick when i read in the car though!

permanent response lopp (harbl), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:45 (sixteen years ago)

fair enough.

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:45 (sixteen years ago)

carsick is worst kind of nausea

cockles (country matters), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

I like walking more than just about anything (I could happily walk around a city alone, with headphones, for days).

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I can't read in cars. Buses and trains are not a problem for some reason (maybe because they're bigger/move slower?)

go Nick go! Scrub that paint! Scrub it!! Yeah!! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i can read in buses and trains

permanent response lopp (harbl), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:47 (sixteen years ago)

yes but buses also lurch about a lot ... but maybe that's just SF MUNI ...

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

I like walking more than just about anything (I could happily walk around a city alone, with headphones, for days).

^^^this, but when I use foot as transportation in any significant way, it's generally a (glorious) indulgence. Train is the most significant transportation of my life so far, if that makes sense.

cockles (country matters), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

walking if it's a new city
if it's the same old one it's waaaay less fun

jergins, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

I think that's a pretty standard bus manoeuvre.
Honorable mention goes to bikes, planes, cars (it just feels great to drive), and BART (I don't know whether this counts as a subway or a commuter train?). I love BART.

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

xpost re: busses lurching

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

walking's fine if you don't have to carry a bunch of stuff and if the weather is decent, or you're in a mood where walking around in bad weather has some romantic appeal ...

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

i am in the middle of walking all of my worldly possessions to a new apartment that's how much i love walking

permanent response lopp (harbl), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

am now wondering whether it was a good idea not to vote for Foot...my consolation is that it'll probably win by a zillion miles and i'll have given municipal railways some much-needed lovin'

cockles (country matters), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:56 (sixteen years ago)

I used to love vinyl records before I had to move them via walking.

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:56 (sixteen years ago)

well gotta go employ 3 modes of transportation to get home, adios

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

driving's fine if you aren't stuck in horrific traffic and if the weather is decent, or you're in a mood where driving around in crap weather has some titillating daredevil appeal ...

it's like i have a couple worked up orc dicks under my arms (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

get a van you fucking hippies

jergins, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

xp alex: dude you live in SF ... probably the least crap weather in the US

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

I'm confused. Don't you live here too? Where is all this crappy weather that's fucking up your walks?

it's like i have a couple worked up orc dicks under my arms (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

bike v. train (overground, local or LD)

my car-less month in LA soured me on foot for awhile

The Collected Works of Fun Fun (donna rouge), Thursday, 13 August 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

I live in Oakland. I'm sitting in my apartment sweating buckets right now.

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Thursday, 13 August 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

The weather in Oakland, compared to the rest of the country, is pretty good for walking: it doesn't rain a lot, it doesn't snow, it's rarely humid, and it rarely gets over 100 degrees or below 30. In SF it almost never gets below 40 and above 80.

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Thursday, 13 August 2009 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

i voted for "train (overground; long-distance)" because it's always a pleasure. comfortable seats, nice view, easy to get up and stretch your legs, and the only other traffic is whatever is sharing the right-of-way.

ayo scott (get bent), Thursday, 13 August 2009 00:06 (sixteen years ago)

i love trains. i wish america didn't hate trains.

ayo scott (get bent), Thursday, 13 August 2009 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

My first experience of trains in America - California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco - was the most inspiring experience, and pretty comfortable even without a sleeping carriage. My second - New York to Washington, too five hours - sucked ass and left me longing for the Greyhound.

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Thursday, 13 August 2009 11:59 (sixteen years ago)

Is there a diff between local rail/subway/el? Theyre all just metro train transport right?

Spy in the Cab Sav (Trayce), Thursday, 13 August 2009 12:09 (sixteen years ago)

Voted overground trains, long-distance, though I do wish they'd improve services/cut prices/re-nationalise the railways. Still, the Platonic ideal of an overground long-distance train is far and away the best mode of transport. Although I am intrigued by elevated rail - is this like a monorail? Or just a normal railway on a viaduct type structure? Surely if it is elevated it is also over the ground?

emil.y, Thursday, 13 August 2009 12:55 (sixteen years ago)

Missed this poll. Train and Foot best.

bangkok skytrain

i believe chicago has some also, never seen them

monorails would fall under this category, if you are a nerd and want to vote for monorail

thomp, Thursday, 13 August 2009 13:16 (sixteen years ago)

dear british ppl: did you know the original plan for milton keynes was a monorail-linked city-of-the-future? the shift to the actual design was actually inspired by a visit to los angeles.

thomp, Thursday, 13 August 2009 13:17 (sixteen years ago)

Oi, including foot just isn't fair - urban walking is about my favourite thing in the world, but it doesn't belong here.

Otherwise overground local trains can't be beat. I love how they take unexpected, unknown routes, and especially how people don't consider the bits of their properties facing the train to be the important bits, so you see all sorts of random junk.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 13 August 2009 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

Car but I get to drive.

Foot I guess - I try and walk if it's feasible, as it's the one of the only form of exercise I can put up with (the others are dancing and swimming) and it lets me collect my thoughts.
