I can't really put a description of this style of graphic design into words, but I hate it. Help me.

You know what I mean??? This is a new "neighborhood" logo for the West Bank in Mpls..but i fucking HATE this style of design...it looks like a microbrew or a brewpub or some shit....

but i can't really pick out the things that make it distinctive enough to hate, but i still know it when i see it.

There's nothing in these designs that couldn't be achieved in a wood-cut or letterpress method, that's one of the most distinctive things about them. Old-timey in artisanal way.

the "real * different" is really the kicker here. smug, and yet not clever at all

They have a slight "Web 2.0" feel about them - shall we call them "Design 2.0" ?

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

You're right, they do both have half-tone shades...I totally overlooked those in my quest for the other point. Which makes them look kind of..."cheap", if you know what I mean. Real letterpress or woodcut would actually be evidence of someone performing a craft along the lines of the aesthetic they want you to take away from these dumbass things.

The Lion's Mane Jellyfish, pictured here with its only natural predator (Laurel), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

yeah stars show up in this kind of design a lot, could be facist or LA ink inspired, not sure which

to the sound of old g-dep (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

The "REAL" should be in italics to underline (er...) it's smugness

REAL * DIFFERENT

Nautical stars. Nabisco had it with "militaristic".

Clipart 2.0

StanM, Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

this neighborhood? yeah, it's real. but not in the ghetto sense of keeping it real. it's real, but different. you know, lots of professional folks with dogs! burgers on the $2500 gas grill! you know? nobody's a phony. boob jobs and dartboards and bacon on everything. real. different.

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 13 August 2009 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

ha that's wishful thinking for the west bank

goole, Thursday, 13 August 2009 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

neighborhoods w/logos - says something

ice cr?m, Thursday, 13 August 2009 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

ha, i know nothing of the neighborhood, just free associating on the graphic style

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 13 August 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I think by "heartland + militaristic" I was thinking about how they combine the icons and organization of (20th-century?) military patches and national symbols (like nautical stars, wavy flag-like bars at the bottom, branchy circling borders, etc.) with, in my head, like ... sunrises and grain and whatnot. like they'd go on the shoulder of the 20th Airborne Iowa Wheat-Threshing Force. but it's a very American thing, right, an attempt at a kind of industrial-design Americana, isn't it? there's also an element of it that reminds me of, like, a Gilded-Age dry-goods concern.

nabisco, Thursday, 13 August 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)

i hate it too
