five months pass...

Erwin, Tennessee...you have to go visit this little town. It is spectacular. It is located right on the border with NC and it the quintessential Main Street city you see in 50's movies. I swear, they have a 3 lane bowling alley, a movie theatre that hasn't been redecorated since 1955, and a soda fountain in the local Roller Drug Store (straight out of the Andy Griffith Show). The Mayor's name is Bubba..that says it all! Other than the fact that it does have a few horrible stories from the early 20th century (Mary the Elephant and the Lynchings that took place), it is just a neat little town.

Being an animal lover, I found this a very terrible thing :( Elephants are mammals, as are whales, and they are beautiful! Why are people so cruel? I guess some people are just miserable and have nothing better to do than to show how macho they are. They will get their rewards in the end though. The person that fed a lighted cigarette to the elephant, just showed how many brains he had and to me, he wouldn't have thought twice about doing the samething to a child!

I just recently learned of this story. I think it's sick and sad, and just another reminder that for as superior as we human beings think we are, we're never too far away from our animal brains.

i dont think i want to look at the link, it sounds too awful to contemplate.
i have never ever been able to understand what people get out of being cruel to animals. few things enrage me more than animal mistreatment, and what is frustrating about it all is that if people are 'caught' they get a piddily FINE! well, here in nz and australia thats all that happens. unbelieveable!

I am just sickened by this story. I don't think I have ever seen such a disturbing photo in my entire life.

What is more disgusting are the lame ass comments from some of the people on this board - stupid redneck comments and someone saying how great Erwin is? Very screwed up individuals.
I'm thankful for the few here that actually have a clue and understand that cruelty to animals is unacceptable and breeds hatred.

FYI, Elephants only kill/charge when they are suffering severe abuse themselves.

I wish I could say that this kind of obscene cruelty doesn't exist today, but it does and donna is right - people are rarely punished to any significant degree. I have faith that times are changing and that those sick ass*&#es who abuse and maim animals will get what they deserve.

I live about ten minutes away from Erwin, and although the episode involving hanging an elephant is certainly shocking and repulsive, let me assure you that things are different there today. Now, they only hang kittens.
