the apps that figure out what song is playing still amaze me (the android standardbearer is Shazam, i think). last weekend i saw the married w/ children ep. where al is trying to figure out the song that's in his head "hmmmm him..." lol. I can relate as I've been just as frustrated dozens of times. now this is technology

'toddler lock' is pretty cool too, for parents who can't say 'no' but can say 'kinda'. music box dementia + poppy little shapes. my daughter's throwing arm is getting too good to indulge in phone playtime but it's neat

haven't played with the shopping/barcode apps but those are pretty standard issue right?, most of the other things i've installed are utilities and odds and ends (flashlight, picture uploaders, google sky map is cool looking but don't really know what to do with...stars). intrigued by visual voicemail, i truly hate listening to phone messages now wish people would just get over email phobia or whatever it's just words!

Is there an app that runs flash webpages? It seems like apple deliberately is keeping back flash development so that 90% of their novelty apps would still have a reason for being.

there's only a handful of phones atm but google seems to say fuck you to whatever isn't the current model (SOP in the smartphone arena, granted, and i know there's a lot of triangulation necessary between hardware/software/service provider/other developers etc but it is disappointing). no doubt flash will come to android, period but it's gonna be a wait, the 'Hero' has to have its moment in the sun.

Also, if you have a premium Spotify account there's an unofficial app called 'Droidify' that got pulled from the Marketplace. You should still be able to get it from your t0rrent site of choice, though.

bought the midomi app (music identifier) recently, faster than shazam but similarly useless for spanish language music, haven't tried it on classical yet. other than that the ones that have wowed me recently are the gps nav added to google maps and pda net, which lets you tether a laptop (and was free iirc). loaded the newish rhapsody app but haven't used it, you have to upgrade to rhapsody-to-go which is $3.00 more a month than the regular acct, don't think so.

Y'all gotta try Subsonic. It's a streaming media server and client that lets me easily access my entire library remotely. It seems to use up about 15% of my battery for a single album which is fair enough.

DoubleTwist player, especially if you get the AirSync and podcast extensions as well.

Also - ZING TOUCH for Android, when when when?
― Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 12:59 (twelve years ago)
i did start android zing, but then realised the web version was fine for 99% of things.
that said, i think it's improved a lot with a bit of a css tweak - android firefox also has an annoying thing of making the 100% wide stuff 100% wide even when that's only 300 pixels. makes the Add a Post box and the menu bars tiny.
― koogs, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:05 (twelve years ago)
Yeah it's not ideal. I'm currently writing in massive, letters. It's just not the same as hAving Zing on my old iPhone.
― Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:14 (twelve years ago)
Doubletwist seems to have a lot of negative user feedback. Not sure I'm terribly fussed about streaming music, only what's on my phone. Just looking for something simple and easy to use but not so basic you lose control over functionality.
Also I haven't understood why I can't manually edit id3 tags on the phone from my desktop
― Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:20 (twelve years ago)
Most of the negative feedback around Doubletwist was due to its useless desktop application, which has now changed completely. The phone media player is fine, although scrobbling has been a bit temperamental lately so I've switched to Winamp until they've sorted it out, although that looks like shit.
Opera Mobile is the best browser for ILX posting, I've found.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:31 (twelve years ago)
Kind of stupid that the Spotify app doesn't let you browse the music that's on your phone in any way, would make things a lot easier if I didn't have to keep switching between players.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:32 (twelve years ago)
I couldn't get Doubletwist to do much. Subsonic either - are these only for streaming from a home computer or do they play stuff on your phone too?
For some reason Poweramp was double-scrobbling some artists while ignoring others. Not sure what was going on there. I'll give Winamp a go.
― Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:37 (twelve years ago)
They're all for playing the music on your phone, primarily. They're all basically the same so I'm not sure why you're having problems working them. Just find the one that looks and functions best for you and stick with it.
Poweramp really does look like shit.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:39 (twelve years ago)
oh well blimey, doubletwist works now. cheers!
― Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:43 (twelve years ago)
the good thing about poweramp is it's got the option to access Folders rather than a Library, so if you prefer organising your music in a more manual way rather than via ID3 tags it's pretty neat.
― Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 13:44 (twelve years ago)
The way I get round that is to create .m3u files for each folder. Winamp then has a playlist for each folder.

got me one of these. not sure i've had a new not hand-me-down smartphone before but i thought i might as well get something (4g moto g) for the ahem petite-handed while i still can
seems p aight? google (and every shill reviewer i read before purchasing who didnt mention this) are fucking cunts for disabling writing to sd card, i was transferring mp3s easier than this six years ago. using a combination of es explorer and pixel player but it's all a bit... manual
i was trying to get it to automatically disable lockscreen on home wifi detection but tasker and skiplock seem to only be able to do this for pin and not pattern lock is this correct
press app is tremendo but the sync with feedly is getting on my nerves a bit - feedly doesnt register articles read in press but is immediately fine with starred ones? no biggie but makes no sense. hope this isnt abandonware as some are saying
whats a good football scores app btw, forza seems to be the leader but only appears to cater for the big boys, no championship scorers and lineups info etc
lux dash is excellent
talon seems better than falcon pro imo?

So I have ebooks -- I really love Google Books but I can't stand having to upload files and then download them to my Android instead of being able to just USB them
I got Aldiko but there is serioulsy a 0.5-1 second lag in turning pages, and it doesn't have the cool page turning animation that I love so much
Moon+ is supposed to be good but if I want PDF support I have to pay $5
What do I do??? Does anyone have a neat solution for me?

FBreader has a pdf plugin apparently (though reviews seem divided as to how well it works)
i'm ok with google books and its ecosystem but fbr seems maybe a bit snappier, slightly fiddly to set up and not as polished but fine to read. i quite like its paper texture background somewhat embarrassingly to say
vertical swipe to dim/brighten (like on stanza way back when) doesn't seem to work on mine tho which was the main reason i looked elsewhere. system limitation presumably :/

Is there no way to get it to forget tomorrow's 6am alarm, just once, because it's a bank holiday?
It does let me dismiss it within 2 hours of it going off, but that's useless.

> Is there no way to get it to forget tomorrow's 6am alarm, just once, because it's a bank holiday?> It does let me dismiss it within 2 hours of it going off, but that's useless.
that's line 245 in AlarmInstance.kt
const val LOW_NOTIFICATION_HOUR_OFFSET = -2
if that was a -12. allowing me to cancel the 6am alarm at 10 the previous night, all my prayers would be answered. not sure how to recompile this and replace the current version with it.

― maf you one two (maffew12), Tuesday, 29 December 2020 16:32 (five years ago)
thanks again maffew, microG comes with the download from the official Vanced site so it's all looking good. Do think there might be a chance there is some spoiler on the horizon to stop this working? I'm thinking if there was actually a way to do it - Google would have probably done it by now.
― calzino, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 16:39 (five years ago)
pretty much. If Google wants Youtube available on a wide range of devices they can't lock things down too hard. It seems to be a matter of having teams for this sort of thing keep up with their changes.
― maf you one two (maffew12), Tuesday, 29 December 2020 21:23 (five years ago)
just been looking at some video reviews and apparently there is another way you can install google apps through third-party sources via some resident Huawei search engine or something. So their MatePad (lol!) 10.4 model is looking like a bargain in comparison to other android devices. The very nice screen and 3d quad speaker system is a deal-breaker, because I'm buying it for a young adult with autism who only uses YouTube.
― calzino, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 23:33 (five years ago)
it was so easy to install YouTube Vanced, it took me about 3 minutes and there are no discernible differences between it and the Google serviced YouTube app. Total winner for president Xi and lovers of not paying two and a half times the price for an ipad with inferior sound quality.
― calzino, Thursday, 31 December 2020 23:02 (five years ago)
YouTube Vanced is still working for now but is on borrowed time after a google cease + desist order in March. I don't know how it has left without updates but RIP because it was a great app. I tried NewPipe as an alternative for the kid's Huawei and it's fine but you can't log in.
― calzino, Thursday, 28 April 2022 10:22 (three years ago)
I've just read someone quoting one of the Vanced developers saying it may survive for another two years without updates, that sounds rather hopeful but perhaps someone else will come up with something before it stops working.
― calzino, Thursday, 28 April 2022 19:53 (three years ago)
no thread I can see for this so guess I'll put it here.my Samsung android phone drives me up the wall with its sleeping and refreshing of apps. if I switch across to a different app, when I switch back it will refresh the whole thing, so for example* switching across back to YouTube will not only have lost my place in the video, it will exit entirely to the front screen, and I'll have to find it in the history* Adobe acrobat will refresh and open a seemingly random pdf, usually I am opening it to display a train ticket qr code, and as 95% of the pdfs on there are basically identical train ticket qr codes this has led to me taking screenshots instead of trusting acrobat.* The worst one is when a website sends an sms code, I have to switch across to messages to read it, then when I switch back the page is refreshed and I can't log in at all.Am I being an idiot here? is there some simple way if fixing it? or is this some shit that everyone is putting up with?

― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 20:48 (two years ago)
I've had a couple of completely new flagship phones over recent years, different brands and Geo fencing works one day and then never again. My phone only knows where I am if I open Google maps (hours after arriving at work, for instance) - sometimes Google Home cheerfully announces that I'm leaving home and that it's turning off my lights/heating/airco when I do that, but 9/10 times it doesn't. So I install the app from LG that does the same thing for my AC unit: EXACTLY the same behaviour. It works maybe one or two days, and then never again. Android 12 Android 13 Android 14 : no difference whatsoever. Everything has all the permissions/location permissions/battery permissions/run in the background/don't sleep/complete factory reset of the whole phone: every one of the 400 suggestions you can find for this kind of thing: nothing. I'm having to resort to scheduling or manually turning everything on/off. (yes, I know, that's how it used to be done but this is supposed to be smart home smart everything + this isn't something that was invented in 2023)
Why is this so difficult? :(
