Dudes, where should I study?

I have the option of doing part of my course in another country, but where should I go? Probably not all of these will be an option, but assuming they are... At the moment, leaning towards Glasgow or Kyoto, but I'm sure a poll of people on the internet I've never met will carry more weight than any other factor.

WTF, Rowan and TCNJ but not Rutgers?

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

haha I just realized Rowan is very very close to where I used to live (and I think you still do, Stevie D!) in NJ

Kean University
New Jersey City University
Richard Stockton College
Rowan University
William Patterson University

I have never heard of any of these places

iatee, Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:26 (sixteen years ago)

c'mon, this is where your classes will be held

velko, Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

I have heard of all of them and I think you will find them kind of provincial. None are really highly rated universities. New Jersey City University is basically a community college in a crappy part of Jersey City.

why do you have such horrible choices in USA?

UF and ASU are both top party schools tho

iatee, Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:33 (sixteen years ago)

oh and Penn State.

beyond that, what connection do these schools have? so random

iatee, Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

fuck the state pen, etc. etc.

a being that goes on two legs and is ungrateful (dyao), Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:35 (sixteen years ago)

Is that even the main Penn State campus? The UNC one isn't.

the kid is crying because did sharks died? (Hurting 2), Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

yeah UP is main campus

a being that goes on two legs and is ungrateful (dyao), Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

florida and arizona are like the worst states we have though, i'd rather be in NJ

permanent response lopp (harbl), Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

canada would be good imo

permanent response lopp (harbl), Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

beyond that, what connection do these schools have? so random

would assume either the availability of the specific course or a relationship with the particular aussie university

Xiamen University is located in Fujian province, which is where a lot of Chinese immigrants come from these days...rats from a sinking ship?

USA: Rowan University: I go here. Don't go here.

Helsinki, Zurich, Vietnam top three; Kyoto, Netherlands, Sweden, Hong Kong pretty close.

The Loneliness of the Single-Issue Googler (los blue jeans), Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

Whoaaa you go to Rowan? I have friends that go to Rowan and used to live a few towns over from you. You have only the Landmark to go to; you poor thing...

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Thursday, 20 August 2009 04:24 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah Rowan's kind of shit; it's basically where everyone went if they didn't want to go to community college but didn't feel like moving out of their house either.

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Thursday, 20 August 2009 04:25 (sixteen years ago)

So don't travel halfway around the world to study there?

ambience chaser (S-), Thursday, 20 August 2009 04:26 (sixteen years ago)

Well, I only have 1 semester left. Just finishing up what I started at Ruckus 10 yrs ago.

The Loneliness of the Single-Issue Googler (los blue jeans), Thursday, 20 August 2009 04:30 (sixteen years ago)

xp, I wouldn't travel halfway across the state.

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Thursday, 20 August 2009 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

What are you looking for out of this experience? Being in a cool place? Having a good academic experience? Building a resume? Do you want to actually try and immerse in the university life or are you happy being an outsider? Is this purely a one-off experience or do some of these places relate more to your long-term goals and interests?

About 1/3 of those schools seem intriguing to me. You should figure out what you are looking for and then do some research.

Super Cub, Thursday, 20 August 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

Utrecht is a great town! (in the Netherlands)

but Vietnam seems like the most adventurous choice. can't go wrong with Scandinavia either. (Malmo's probably nice for example)

Ludo, Thursday, 20 August 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

Don't go to Arizona State

god bless this -ation (Abbott), Thursday, 20 August 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

Kyoto would be great. I've spent some time there and love it. It's a real city but totally manageable. Osaka and Kobe are both close, and Tokyo is a couple hours away. Lots of students too. I'm not sure that you'd have a particularly rewarding academic experience though.

Super Cub, Thursday, 20 August 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

Do not listen to me, as I do not have your best interests at heart: maybe you should get Bentley U.!

Aimless, Thursday, 20 August 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

Do you speak any of these other countries' languages?

god bless this -ation (Abbott), Thursday, 20 August 2009 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

presumably English : )

some thoughts on your Canadian options:

- when I applied at Concordia the staff were lovely and very, very helpful, at least in the registrar's office and the department I dealt with (history). public transit throughout the city is good. and Montreal has the added bonus of being greatest city evarrr (imo).

- U of A is considered a good university but Edmonton is generally not considered a good city (although it's not as bad as people make it out to be). it is very very cold in the winter and has dire public transit. the area around the university is decent though — walkable, pretty 1920s houses, gorgeous river valley, very leafy (well, for about 4 months out of the year), good pubs/shops/nightlife.

- I have never been to Kitchener-Waterloo but the city strikes me as the type of place you'd just want to be far far away from. I recall its university being well-rated though.

but then you've got the choice of really cool places like Vietnam and Japan, so why tf would you want to go to Canada!?

salsa shark, Thursday, 20 August 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

LOOOOOOL BUFF STATE!?!?!

i didn't know anyone outside of western new york even knew that existed!

voted kyoto.

tehresa, Thursday, 20 August 2009 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

also, what sort of disposable income are you working with? your money be worth a lot more in Vietnam & China v. Japan or Europe.

a being that goes on two legs and is ungrateful (dyao), Friday, 21 August 2009 01:19 (sixteen years ago)

I really, really hope the other universities on that list aren't as bad as the US ones. Yikes.

the kid is crying because did sharks died? (Hurting 2), Friday, 21 August 2009 04:46 (sixteen years ago)

couple of things; some place (like Japan) apparently contribute toward student costs, and I may be eligible for a EU passport, making it silly not to study in Europe...

but this is pretty U&K:

Next step is to see if I'm eligible for any artists grants or similar while studying...

MC Hamer Hall (S-), Thursday, 27 August 2009 04:17 (sixteen years ago)

xiamen is a beautiful, colorful, fucking fun city. but... china has very few good universities but they're still at the academic level of a really good community college anywhere in the west-- there are some exceptions but they basically cover single departments, or single professors at diff't universities. and outside of those dozen, two dozen exceptions, chinese universities are some bullshit. so, i'd say research the program really carefully, but if you don't give a fuck, xiamen is a lot more fun than any city on that list.

univ of alberta is dope, depending on program, etc. and edmonton is a great city. other canadian choices: concordia is aight. waterloo and area is the most worst place on earth, but the school is "good."

dylannn, Thursday, 27 August 2009 04:54 (sixteen years ago)

I will stick up for Arizona State. Sure, you will be physically miserable there, you will be surrounded by dead souls, poorer-quality Mexican food than you would image, plus the baked garbage stench, the overwhelming sense of wasted youth and ambient retardation, and all that, but they have some really terrific modern buildings and at least three or four decent programs (in disciplines unrelated to yours). And you're only like two hours from TOMBSTONE!!! THE OLD WEST!!! GUNFIGHTS!!! DOC HOLLIDAY!!! OK CORRAL!!! TOMBSTONE ARIZONA!!!

Royal Institute of Technology or Vietnam.

I always get excited for people who have the opportunity to pick a place to travel for the purpose of living/studying/working there temporarily. Fun stuff. So cheers!

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 27 August 2009 05:08 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks iiiijjjj. It'll be a lot of work to organise but I'd be a real stooge to pass up an opportunity like this, so yeah.

poorer-quality Mexican food than you would image,

Still probably better than Mex in Australia...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

finland, hong Kong or Kyoto would be awesome!

also, an upstate native i have to point out that buffalo state has a few really good programs, such as conservation, so if you're a specialist it can be a great place (just lie a lot of these schools, given responses above.) unfortunately, it's in buffalo, so don't go there to study abroad.

so whats it going to be????

Hillary had Everest in his veins (sunny successor), Saturday, 29 August 2009 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, well. I reckon I'd like to visit the US/Canada at a different point, perhaps not to study. Really after more foreign cultures if I'm to be continuing to develop what I'd like to be doing in sound art (of which this CD is pretty much the prototype: http://www.last.fm/music/Automating/Bin+01 )

So I'm thinking:

FINLAND: University of Art & Design, Helsinki (TAIK), FINLAND: University of Oulu: Beautiful country and English is widely spoken, might be able to get a EU passport, but likely to be really expensive. Also Tuomous sundae.
JAPAN: Ryukoku University (Kyoto): Beautiful as well, would be fantastic for sound art/performing, always wanted to go there, uni might stump up cash to study, but language barrier and perhaps massive culture shock. Also expensive - even if I managed to live frugally I would probably bankrupt myself by buying too much music gear.
UK - SCOTLAND: Glasgow School of Art: Good music scene, +ive if I had an EU pass? Language barrier & expensive.
SWITZERLAND: Zurich University of the Arts: Same as Finland I guess, maybe more expensive, although possibly I'm owed some looted Nazi gold?
NETHERLANDS: Utrecht School of the Arts: As above I suppose.
VIETNAM: RMIT International University Vietnam: Would be cheap, close(ish), same uni. Amazing opportunities for sound art. Unfortunately it doesn't grab me like Japan or the EU, and could possibly have lots of fucking Australians there.

MC Hamer Hall (S-), Friday, 4 September 2009 04:41 (sixteen years ago)
