S & D: Cheap Tequila

What is drinkable, and what should be avoided? I know nothing about liquor (I'm a whiskey guy), but I picked up a bottle of something called El Toro and I'm expecting to hate myself tomorrow.

You will. It is SO worth it to drink better booze, especially if you're buying it and consuming it at home. Here's my rationalization for buying better (and therefore, more expensive) booze:

A .750 ml of Jose Cuervo Gold is $15.00. This is bad tequila.

A .750 of Cazadores Reposado is $27.00. This is pretty good tequila.

This means that there is a $12.00 difference between the two, or, stated another way, an 80% quality mark up.

If you figure that you, by yourself, can take down a third a night - about 6 shots - thats $4.00 per night in order to minimize your hangover. Basically, less than the cost of an extra shot to ensure that you don't feel like death the next day.

I think this holds true accross the board for hard liquor and wine. Beer is a little different, as the higher quality beers tend to fuck me up more because of higher alcohol content. Malt Liquor is an outlier.

But, in terms of cheap tequila, you should take Cuervo Gold as the low water mark, and never seek to see what is worse. It is a dark, dark pool of scary hangovers and severe gastric distress.

Sauza is not terrible. Cazadores, while not cheap, is not terribly expensive.

This advice is given with a caveat - when making margaritas, the number of margaritas made is inversely proportional to the quality of the tequila. If you're hosting a pool party/cookout with 25+, handles of El Toro will do the trick. A quiet afternoon in the sun with a close friend or two would call for a much better tequila.

But never mix anything nicer than a silver tequila for a margarita. Reposados and Anejos are for sipping, not mixing.

Cheap tequila = dud

unfortunately, decent tequila is much more expensive than decent rum, bourbon, gin, vodka, etc..

one year passes...

tried trader joe's "zapopan" 100% agave blanco because it was $10
it's ok~ish for margaritas, not sure i would do it again but at that price & 100% agave thought it was worth a shot
milagro silver at $20 is still hard to beat for a decent margarita
