I'm going to Africa in a week and I really need to get a camera for the trip (mine was stolen a few weeks ago). I'm not an experienced photogrpaher and only know the basics about shutter speed, exposure, etc. My girlfriend has a Canon Rebel XS and I can use it effectively but I by no means know what all the controls do.
My father (who knows a bit about cameras) keeps telling me I should just get a point and shoot. I personally like the Rebel a lot, but he says since I'm not a semi-professional, I should stick with something smaller and easier. Specifically, he's recommending the Lumix DMC ZS1 or the Canon Powershot SX10.
What would you guys recommend? This is a once in a lifetime trip (I'll be in Uganda and Rwanda for 4 months) and I want something that's going to take great pictures. Any help would be appreciated.

don't know how helpful this will be cuz i'm not sure how many people actually post there, but there is a board for "i love photography" http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/NewAnswersControllerServlet?boardid=1067219147

A Rebel XS can be used as a point & shoot. There should be a dial you can turn to 'p' mode, or a green square.
But you have to carry film, etc. A digital p&s might be easier for you if you can spare the cash.
